Mormyrus iriodes, known in the trade (where it is known at all) as the Inga mormyrid, is a weakly electric fish endemic to a single stretch of the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — the turbulent Inga Falls reach, where the river drops through a series of rapids on its way to the Atlantic. It belongs to the Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, and to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: one of the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Described by Tyson Roberts and Donald Stewart in 1976, it carries the electric organ and outsized cerebellum typical of its family but is otherwise little studied, and its narrow, dam-threatened range has earned it a Vulnerable listing from the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrus iriodes was described by Tyson R. Roberts and Donald J. Stewart in 1976, part of their landmark survey of the fish fauna of the lower Congo (then Zaire) River — one of the most species-rich and least-explored stretches of river in the world, cut by a series of rapids below Inga Falls. The species belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost (ray-finned bony) fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Mormyridae is an exclusively African family and, with roughly 200 species, is by far the largest family in the order.

The genus Mormyrus is itself large, holding several dozen species scattered across African river systems, several of them — like M. iriodes — narrow-range endemics tied to a single stretch of rapids or floodplain. The common name "Inga mormyrid" references the Inga Falls reach of the lower Congo, the only place the species is known from; it is essentially absent from hobby and popular literature and is known almost exclusively through the ichthyological record.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Mormyrus iriodes has the classic mormyrid silhouette: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a single soft dorsal fin set well back on the body and roughly opposite a similarly placed anal fin, and a deeply forked tail built around a slender caudal peduncle. The mouth is small and set low, without the fleshy, mobile chin barbel (the "schnauzenorgan") that marks the related genus Gnathonemus. Reported maximum size is around 10.6 in total length (FishBase), a modest mormyrid well short of the largest species in the genus.

The defining feature of the family is invisible at a glance: a weak electric organ near the base of the tail generates a species-specific, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), read by an array of electroreceptors across the skin. Mormyrids use this system to electrolocate — sensing objects, obstacles and prey by the way they distort the fish's own electric field — an essential sense in dark, sediment-laden rapids and blackwater channels, and also to communicate, since EOD waveform and pulse rate vary between species and individuals and figure in courtship and dominance interactions. The family is well known among neuroscientists for having some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around an enlarged, highly folded cerebellum that processes the electrosensory signal.

Habitat

Mormyrus iriodes is endemic to the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the reach associated with Inga Falls — a stretch where the river drops through roughly 15 major rapids over a few hundred kilometres, creating one of the most powerful and structurally complex river systems on Earth. It is known only from this system and is not documented elsewhere.

The lower Congo here runs as soft, low-pH, low-conductivity, tannin-stained blackwater, typical of the rainforest-draining tributaries and backwaters that feed the main channel between the rapids. Water across the tropical Congo basin runs warm and fairly stable year-round. This dim, mineral-poor, current-swept setting is exactly where a weakly electric fish's sense earns its keep: visibility is often close to zero, and the electric field does the work eyes cannot.

Feeding

Like other mormyrids, Mormyrus iriodes is presumed to be a benthic invertebrate feeder, foraging over the substrate for insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and similar prey buried in sediment or wedged among rock and root cover, and locating them largely by electrolocation rather than sight — an advantage in turbid, low-light rapids where visual foraging is unreliable. Feeding activity in mormyrids generally peaks at dusk and after dark.

No species-specific dietary study exists for M. iriodes. Mormyrids as a group are not interested in flake or dry pellet food and do best on live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, blackworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and the like — a pattern this species is presumed to follow given the near-total absence of direct observation.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for Mormyrus iriodes specifically. Across the Mormyridae, spawning is understood to be seasonal and often linked to the rains and rising floodwaters, which open up flooded margins and vegetation as spawning and nursery habitat. Electric organ discharge is thought to carry the courtship signal — waveform and pulse timing differ enough between species and even individuals that the EOD likely functions in species recognition and mate assessment — but the fine detail of mormyrid courtship remains poorly studied for almost the whole family.

No pairing, courtship display or spawning site has been described for this species, and given its narrow range and the practical difficulty of observing fish in a rapids-dominated river, that gap is unlikely to close soon.

Breeding

Mormyrus iriodes has, so far as the available sources record, never been bred in captivity, and this is true of mormyrids in general — despite the family's popularity for its electric sense and apparent intelligence, captive breeding successes are rare and poorly documented even for common aquarium mormyrids. The likely reasons include sensitivity to water quality, reliance on a seasonal, flood-triggered spawning cue that is difficult to reproduce in a tank, and the practical difficulty of sexing and pairing fish that show little obvious external dimorphism.

What little aquarium supply exists for mormyrids generally is wild-collected. For a range-restricted, Vulnerable species like M. iriodes, that fact matters directly for its conservation status: there is no captive-bred alternative to ease pressure on the wild population, and no established protocol exists to create one.

In the aquarium

Mormyrus iriodes is not, in any practical sense, an aquarium fish — it is essentially unrecorded in hobby literature, endemic to a single stretch of one of the hardest rivers in the world to survey, and assessed as Vulnerable. Where general mormyrid husbandry applies, the genus-wide rules are demanding: a spacious aquarium (mormyrid guides typically recommend a minimum around 59.1 in), stable and scrupulously clean water — mormyrids are markedly more sensitive to poor water quality than most community fish — a soft, dim, tannin-stained setup echoing blackwater habitat, and a diet of live or frozen invertebrates rather than dry food.

Mormyrids are notably intolerant of common medications, with copper-based treatments and formalin toxic to them, so routine community-tank dosing is a real risk if one is ever mixed into a general system. The group is not simply "peaceful": most mormyrids fare poorly kept fully alone yet can also spar with their own kind in close quarters, so stocking needs real care rather than a default rule. None of this is species-tested for M. iriodes, which should not be treated as a template hobby fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus iriodes as Vulnerable, an assessment dated 16 February 2009. The listing reflects a species with an extremely restricted range — the entire known population is confined to the lower Congo River around Inga Falls — which makes it inherently exposed to any single, localised threat.

That threat is concrete: the Inga Falls reach has been targeted for decades by large-scale hydropower development, including the existing Inga I and II dams and the long-proposed, far larger Grand Inga project, which fragments river habitat and can restrict access to spawning grounds for rapids-dwelling fish. For a narrow endemic like M. iriodes, further dam construction on the lower Congo is the central long-term conservation concern.
