Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus tenuirostris was described by the German ichthyologist Wilhelm Peters in 1882. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes or mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching plate on the roof of the mouth. The genus Mormyrus is large and exclusively African, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Mormyrus tenuirostris as a valid, currently accepted name.
The common name "Athi elephant-snout fish" reflects both its narrow known range, the Athi River in Kenya, and the family's signature feature: a downturned, elongated snout used to probe the riverbed for food. The species epithet tenuirostris comes from the Latin tenuis, "thin" or "slender", and rostrum, "snout" or "beak" — a fitting description for a fish whose head narrows into a fine, probing tip. As with most mormyrids, individual species can look similar to one another, and a confident field identification often relies on the fish's unique electric-organ discharge rather than on colour or shape alone.
Morphology
Mormyrus tenuirostris has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of its genus, with a small, subterminal mouth set at the tip of a long, tapering snout — the "slender snout" of its name. FishBase records it as lacking scales, a trait shared with other mormyrids that leaves the skin more exposed and, in turn, more sensitive to medication and salt (see "In the aquarium").
Like other members of the family, it carries a weakly electric organ near the base of the tail that produces a continuous, species-specific train of brief electrical pulses, an electric-organ discharge or EOD. Mormyrids as a group are known for having one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrical information the EOD returns from the surrounding water. FishBase gives a maximum size of 13.1 in standard length for this species, a modest figure within a genus whose largest members exceed a metre; no total-length or aquarium-specific size data have been published.
Habitat
Mormyrus tenuirostris is a freshwater, bottom-dwelling (demersal) fish known from the Athi River in Kenya, East Africa. Occurrence records from iNaturalist and identification references confirm the species within this river system, and it appears to be a narrow-range endemic rather than a widely distributed African mormyrid.
No specific water-temperature or pH data for the wild population have been published. In general, mormyrids favour turbid or dimly lit stretches of African rivers and floodplains, conditions that suit a fish that reads its environment electrically as much as visually, but this has not been documented specifically for M. tenuirostris, and detailed habitat descriptions for the species remain sparse.
Feeding
Mormyrids typically forage after dark, sweeping the electric field generated by their tail organ over the substrate to locate prey by electrolocation before they can see it. Diet across the genus centres on benthic invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans picked out of sand, mud or leaf litter.
No diet study specific to Mormyrus tenuirostris has been published, so the above reflects general genus-level feeding behaviour rather than a species-specific record. Aquarium references for mormyrids more broadly note that bloodworm is a preferred food where these fish are kept, offered after lights-out to match their nocturnal foraging habit.

Courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids is closely tied to the electric-organ discharge: each species' EOD waveform is distinctive enough that it is thought to function as a signature signal between potential mates and rivals, alongside its role in navigation. Beyond this general pattern, which applies across the family, no courtship behaviour has been documented specifically for Mormyrus tenuirostris.
Across Mormyridae as a whole, spawning in the wild is believed to be seasonal and linked to rainfall and flooding, but the details are poorly studied for most species, including this one. Data on this species' reproductive timing, courtship displays or spawning sites are effectively absent from the literature reviewed.
Breeding
Mormyrus tenuirostris has not been documented as bred in the aquarium hobby, and mormyrid breeding in general is poorly understood and rarely achieved in captivity. Hobby literature on the family notes that even well-established, more commonly kept mormyrids seldom spawn under aquarium conditions, and the handful of reported successes give little consistent detail on triggers or rearing.
Wild spawning in the family is thought to follow seasonal flood cycles, with the EOD likely playing a role in pairing, but parental care after spawning is not well characterised for most species. Nothing published addresses breeding or parental behaviour in M. tenuirostris specifically, and captive breeding of this species should be considered unachieved rather than merely difficult.

Mormyrus tenuirostris is, for practical purposes, absent from the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range Kenyan river endemic with no documented history of commercial collection or captive husbandry, and species-specific care information does not exist. The notes below draw on general mormyrid keeping practice rather than on any record for this species, and should be treated as a starting point only, should the fish ever appear in the trade.
Mormyrids as a group need a large footprint (aquarium hobby sources suggest a minimum around 59.1 in / 60 inches for medium to large species), clean, well-oxygenated, well-filtered water, and cover to retreat into during the day, since most are more active after dark. They can be kept solitary or in a group, but groups are sometimes quarrelsome, and individuals may need to be separated if aggression becomes sustained. Because the skin is reported as scaleless in this species, dosing should be conservative — mormyrids are widely regarded as unusually sensitive to copper-based medications and to salt. Reported lifespan for aquarium mormyrids generally runs six to ten years.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List, as cited by FishBase, assesses Mormyrus tenuirostris as Least Concern, an assessment dated 30 June 2022. This reflects the species' current status rather than a detailed population trend, and no numeric population estimate is available in the sources reviewed.
Because the species is known from a single river system in Kenya rather than a broad range, its long-term outlook depends heavily on conditions within the Athi River basin — water abstraction, pollution and habitat change in a single catchment carry more weight for a narrow endemic than for a widely distributed relative, even where the current Red List status is not elevated.
