Mormyrus goheeni is a little-known elephant-snout fish restricted to the St. Paul River drainage of Liberia, in the Upper Guinean forest region of West Africa. It belongs to Mormyridae, a family found only in Africa and one of the oldest living branches of the bony fishes, whose members carry an electric organ near the tail and read the faint field it produces to find food and one another in dark water. Reaching about 34.5 cm in total length, it is a modestly sized member of a large genus, and its own taxonomic identity is unsettled — some sources treat it as a synonym of two other West African Mormyrus species. The IUCN Red List classifies it as Data Deficient, and most of its biology beyond size and locality remains undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrus goheeni was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1919, from material collected in the St. Paul River, Liberia — the species' type locality. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephant-snout fishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes: the bonytongues, one of the oldest living lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad on the roof. FishBase lists Mormyrus goheeni as a valid species, one of more than twenty described Mormyrus found across African rivers and lakes from the Nile to the Congo and the Zambezi.

The species' identity, however, is not fully settled. Some sources treat Mormyrus goheeni as a synonym of Mormyrus tapirus and/or Mormyrus subundulatus, two similarly built elephant-snout fishes described from nearby West African rivers, and no full taxonomic revision resolving the question is cited in the sources reviewed here. Field identification within the genus is difficult by eye alone — many Mormyrus species differ mainly in fine details of fin-ray counts and head shape, and in living fish the species-specific pulse pattern of the electric-organ discharge is often a more reliable guide than external appearance.

The genus name Mormyrus comes from the ancient Greek mormyros, originally the name of an unrelated marine sea bream that early naturalists later applied to this freshwater African group. The species epithet goheeni is a patronym: it honors Dr. Sylvanus McIntyre E. Goheen (1813–1851), a Methodist medical missionary who served in Liberia between 1837 and 1842, decades before Fowler used his name for this fish.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Mormyrus goheeni has an elongated, laterally compressed body, a long-based anal fin, a small dorsal fin set well back toward the tail, and a deeply forked caudal fin. FishBase records a maximum size of about 13.6 in total length, a modest figure for the genus — well short of the large Mormyrus species that top 19.7 in, but still larger than the small elephantnose fishes (Gnathonemus, Campylomormyrus and relatives) most familiar in the aquarium trade. FishBase's trophic-level estimate of 3.2 places it as a low-level carnivore, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than fish.

As in every mormyrid, an electric organ near the base of the tail produces a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric-organ discharge, and electroreceptors spread across the skin read the distortions this field picks up as the fish moves through its surroundings — a sense used to find food and avoid obstacles in dark, turbid water, and thought to help fish recognize members of their own species. Mormyrids as a family are known for some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing this electrosensory input; whether this has been measured specifically in M. goheeni is not documented in the sources reviewed here, but it is a defining trait of the family it belongs to.

Habitat

Mormyrus goheeni is known only from Liberia, in the Upper Guinean forest region of West Africa, with its type locality in the St. Paul River. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical species — a bottom-associated fish of a warm rainforest river system rather than a lake or estuarine species.

Detailed habitat description for this species is sparse. Broader Mormyridae guidance points to slow-flowing river channels and floodplain margins with fine substrate the fish can probe for buried prey, and dim, low-visibility water — the conditions the electric sense evolved to read. Given its very narrow known range, confined to a single river drainage in a country whose forests face ongoing deforestation pressure, M. goheeni is best regarded as a poorly surveyed, range-restricted species rather than one confirmed to be either common or rare.

Feeding

Species-specific feeding data for Mormyrus goheeni is sparse. FishBase's trophic-level estimate of 3.2 ± 0.4 places it among the lower-level invertebrate feeders typical of the family, and mormyrids in general are nocturnal predators that use their electric sense to locate small prey — worms, insect larvae and other invertebrates — buried in soft sediment after dark.

General care guidance for elephant-snout fishes describes a diet of live and frozen foods, bloodworm and brine shrimp in particular, with dry or flake foods rarely accepted. That guidance comes from care literature covering the family rather than this species by name, so it should be read as a reasonable starting point rather than a documented diet for M. goheeni specifically.

Mating

Courtship in mormyrids is understood to rely heavily on the electric-organ discharge: subtle differences in the pulse waveform and timing are thought to let fish recognize species and sex and to figure in courtship and dominance interactions. Species-specific mating behavior for Mormyrus goheeni has not been documented in the sources available here.

In the wild, mormyrids generally spawn seasonally, timed to the rise of floodwater that opens up floodplain habitat and food. Aquarium literature on the family notes that confinement in a tank appears to interfere with the electric signaling fish rely on to find and assess potential mates, one proposed reason captive spawning is rarely seen across the family — though the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Breeding

Breeding of Mormyrus goheeni in captivity is, as far as the available sources indicate, unrecorded, and mormyrid breeding in general is poorly understood and only rarely achieved in home aquaria. The species' unsettled taxonomic status compounds the problem: even a reported spawning would be hard to attribute with confidence given the difficulty distinguishing M. goheeni from its close relatives.

Some mormyrids are thought to guard eggs laid among plants or root tangles in the wild, but this has not been confirmed for M. goheeni. No aquarium spawning account for the species is documented in the sources reviewed here, and its biology at this life stage should be treated as essentially unknown.

In the aquarium

Mormyrus goheeni is essentially absent from the aquarium trade under its own name, and given the doubts over its identity, a fish sold as this species may in practice be Mormyrus tapirus, Mormyrus subundulatus, or simply an unidentified Mormyrus. Anyone offered a fish under this name should treat the label with some skepticism rather than assume a confirmed identification.

General Mormyridae husbandry guidance calls for a tank of at least 59.1 in for an adult-sized elephant-snout fish, soft substrate for probing, dim lighting, and secure hiding places for a fish that is most active after dark. Mormyrids are consistently described as sensitive to water quality — sensitive enough that some species have been used as bioindicators in water-quality testing — so stable, clean, low-turbidity water with minimal disturbance is the standard recommendation for the family, and it should be assumed to apply here until shown otherwise.

Elephant-snout fishes are usually described as peaceful toward unrelated tankmates but intolerant of their own kind in small numbers, with care guidance for the genus recommending a group rather than a lone pair to spread out aggression. FishBase notes the species is harmless to humans, with no venom or bite risk to the keeper.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Mormyrus goheeni as Data Deficient in October 2019, meaning there is not enough information on its population, range or threats to judge its conservation status one way or the other. FishBase's own fishing-vulnerability index, a modeled estimate rather than a formal conservation assessment, rates the species at low vulnerability (25 out of 100), and its population is modeled as capable of doubling in under fifteen months, reflecting the high resilience typical of the family.

Its documented range is confined to Liberia's St. Paul River drainage, which — if that narrow distribution holds up under further survey — would make it a genuinely range-restricted species. Liberia's rainforests face ongoing pressure from logging, agriculture and mining, but no population trend or threat data specific to M. goheeni is available in the sources reviewed here. The honest conclusion is that its status is unknown rather than presumed safe, and that resolving whether it is a distinct species at all is a prerequisite for any meaningful conservation assessment.
