Taxonomy & naming
Petrocephalus congicus was described by the ichthyologists Léon David and Max Poll in 1937. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient living branches of the ray-finned fishes. The order's name refers to a bony, toothed structure on the floor of the mouth that grips and grinds prey against toothed plates on the roof, a feature shared across its scattered, deep-time radiation on four continents.
The genus Petrocephalus — the stone-headed mormyrids — is one of the largest genera in the family, with dozens of species scattered across sub-Saharan Africa, many of them nearly identical to the eye and reliably separated only by fin-ray counts, electroreceptor patterning, or the waveform of the electric-organ discharge. The Congo basin holds an unusually rich Petrocephalus fauna; a 2014 taxonomic revision by Sébastien Lavoué and John Sullivan added several more Congo River species and showed how undercounted the genus had been in the region, though Petrocephalus congicus itself predates that work by more than seventy years. The species epithet congicus is Latin for 'of the Congo,' naming the river system the species is known from.
Morphology
Petrocephalus congicus is a small mormyrid, reaching a maximum of about 3.5 in total length — one of the smaller members of a genus that aquarium care sources describe as generally staying under 3.9 in. Like other Petrocephalus it has the compact, rounded head that gives the genus its name, lacking the elongated, trunk-like snout carried by relatives such as Gnathonemus. Recorded fin-ray counts are 18 to 19 dorsal soft rays and 27 to 28 anal soft rays. A rosette-shaped cluster of electroreceptor organs above the eye is noted as a distinguishing feature of this species, part of the dense electrosensory array mormyrids use to read their surroundings.
As in all mormyrids, a weak electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle near the tail, producing a continuous, low-voltage pulse-type discharge used to electrolocate obstacles and prey in dark or turbid water and to signal to other fish of the same species. The family carries an unusually large, elaborately folded cerebellum relative to body size — among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish — thought to support the constant real-time processing this electrosensory system demands.
Habitat
Petrocephalus congicus is known from the middle Congo River and from the upper Lomami and lower Lualaba rivers, both major tributaries of the Congo system, within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a freshwater, demersal species, living over the riverbed rather than in open water.
Specific water-chemistry data for this species are not documented in the available literature. Congo basin rivers of this kind are typically warm, tropical, often soft and tannin-stained, flowing through dense forest and floodplain habitat — precisely the dim, sediment-laden conditions in which a weakly electric sense is most useful for finding food and avoiding obstacles. These figures should be read as generalizations about the wider basin rather than measurements taken for P. congicus specifically.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Petrocephalus congicus has been published. Mormyrids in general are nocturnal, benthic invertivores that use their electroreceptor-dense heads, rather than eyesight, to detect small invertebrates hidden in sand, silt, and detritus, foraging mostly around dusk and after dark when their electric sense outperforms vision.
Aquarium accounts for the genus describe Petrocephalus taking live and frozen invertebrate foods readily, bloodworm and brine shrimp in particular, and doing best when fed after the lights go out, since these fish are reluctant to compete for food in bright conditions or against faster, sight-feeding tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behavior have not been documented for Petrocephalus congicus. Across the Mormyridae, the species-specific electric-organ discharge is thought to carry information used in courtship and mate or species recognition, a plausible mechanism given how many similar-looking Petrocephalus can share the same stretch of river, but the details have not been studied in this species.
Many African mormyrids time reproduction to seasonal river and floodplain cycles, spawning as rising water opens new habitat and food. Whether P. congicus follows that pattern is unknown; its documented range spans both a large main channel, the middle Congo, and smaller tributary systems, the Lomami and Lualaba, and its reproductive timing has not been described.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Petrocephalus congicus in the wild or in captivity. This is consistent with mormyrids generally, which are essentially not bred in the aquarium hobby and whose reproductive biology remains poorly understood even for species that are more commonly kept; aquarium care sources for the genus note that breeding is rarely, if ever, achieved.
What little is known about mormyrid reproduction elsewhere in the family points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning, with some species thought to guard eggs laid among plants or root mats. None of this has been confirmed for P. congicus specifically, and no captive-breeding reports for the species are documented in the sources available here.
In the aquarium
Petrocephalus congicus is not established in the aquarium trade, and the available care guidance covers Petrocephalus generally rather than this species by name. General guidance for small Petrocephalus calls for a dimly lit aquarium with ample hiding places, driftwood, roots, and other cover, plus stable, clean water, since mormyrids as a group are sensitive to poor water quality. A soft substrate lets the fish probe naturally for food without abrading the electroreceptor-dense head.
Two care points apply across the family. First, mormyrids are scaleless and notably sensitive to copper and to many common medications, so any treatment needs conservative dosing. Second, while Petrocephalus species are generally described as peaceful, they do best kept in a group of their own kind in a suitably dim, quiet tank rather than in a boisterous community. Given how little is documented about P. congicus specifically, husbandry should default to the cautious, well-established standards for small Petrocephalus and Mormyridae generally.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Petrocephalus congicus, which is listed as Not Evaluated. This is typical for a Congo basin mormyrid restricted to internal river systems that have received comparatively little dedicated fisheries or conservation survey work.
Its documented range, the middle Congo River and tributary systems including the Lomami and Lualaba, sits within a basin facing broad pressures such as deforestation, small-scale mining, and increasing fishing effort, but no species-specific threat assessment exists to say whether P. congicus is affected. As with many Not Evaluated Congo basin fishes, more fieldwork is needed before its status can be properly judged.
