Petrocephalus christyi is a small weakly electric mormyrid from the Congo River basin of Central Africa, a member of the bonytongues (order Osteoglossiformes), among the oldest living lineages of bony fish. Like other members of its genus it navigates and communicates in the Congo's dark, tannin-stained water using a species-specific pulse of electricity generated in an organ near the tail, rather than through the trunk-like schnauzenorgan carried by its better-known relative Gnathonemus petersii. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1920 and named for the physician-naturalist Cuthbert Christy, it remains a poorly studied fish, seldom seen in the aquarium trade and essentially unbred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Petrocephalus christyi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1920. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest living lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a toothed plate on the roof of the mouth. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Petrocephalus christyi as the valid name, with Boulenger, 1920 as the authority.

The genus Petrocephalus is a large African radiation of small, plain-bodied mormyrids — more than thirty species are currently recognized, most of them in the Congo River basin. Many are difficult to separate by eye alone; recent work on Congo Petrocephalus has shown that species are more reliably distinguished by their electric organ discharge, the individual waveform each fish produces, than by external appearance, and that the genus has undergone considerable signal diversification within the basin. Petrocephalus christyi is confirmed as a distinct species within that radiation, but given how similar many congeners look, field identification by eye alone should be treated with some caution.

The species epithet honors Cuthbert Christy (1863-1932), a British physician and naturalist who collected extensively in Central Africa in the early twentieth century.

Morphology

Petrocephalus christyi is a small mormyrid, reaching about 3 in total length — modest even by the standards of a genus whose members are all small compared with showier relatives such as Gnathonemus petersii. The body is compressed and elongate in the typical mormyrid plan, with a single dorsal fin set well back over the anal fin and a small mouth. Unlike Gnathonemus, Petrocephalus does not carry a trunk-like chin appendage, the schnauzenorgan; the head is comparatively blunt, and the eye is large relative to the small mouth, an arrangement suited to picking small prey from the substrate rather than probing with an extended snout.

The species carries two dark markings that help distinguish it from congeners in the field: a round black spot below the base of the front of the dorsal fin, and a crescent-shaped mark at the base of the tail. Ground colour is otherwise a plain silvery to olive-grey, typical of a fish that relies more on electrical signalling than visual display.

As in other mormyrids, an electric organ in the caudal peduncle generates a weak, pulse-type electric field that the fish uses to electrolocate in dark or turbid water and, it is presumed, to communicate with other individuals of its species through the shape of the discharge. Mormyrids as a family are known for an unusually large cerebellum relative to body size, among the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish, thought to be tied to processing this electrosensory information.

Habitat

Petrocephalus christyi is widespread across the Congo River basin of Central Africa, recorded from the rapids below Pool Malebo downstream on the main Congo channel, in tributaries reaching to the upper Lualaba, and across the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola.

It is a freshwater, bottom-associated fish of a basin whose slow, forested reaches run soft and acidic — FishBase records a pH near 5.0 for the species, with the upper limit of its tolerance not established, and a temperature range of roughly 72–75 °F. That combination of dim, tannin-stained water and soft, acid chemistry is the setting in which the mormyrid electric sense does its real work: vision is limited, and an electric field reads the water and its obstacles where eyes cannot.

Feeding

Diet has not been directly studied for Petrocephalus christyi, and the sources reviewed here do not describe its stomach contents or feeding behaviour. What can be said comes from the wider genus and family: Petrocephalus and other mormyrids are generally nocturnal invertivores, using electrolocation to find aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms in sediment and leaf litter, foraging mostly after dark when their electric sense outperforms vision.

Aquarists keeping the closely related and better-documented mormyrids feed sinking foods — bloodworm, black mosquito larvae, small live or frozen invertebrates — offered after the lights go out. There is no basis in the sources reviewed to assume Petrocephalus christyi differs from this pattern, but that remains an inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for this species.

Mating

Almost nothing has been published specifically on the courtship of Petrocephalus christyi. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge is thought to help with species recognition and mate assessment — potential partners can, in principle, tell species, sex and perhaps individual identity apart by the shape and timing of each other's pulses — but the details of how this translates into actual courtship behaviour are poorly worked out even for the best-studied genera, and unrecorded for this species.

No pairing, spawning site or courtship display has been documented for Petrocephalus christyi in the literature reviewed. Any account of its mating behaviour beyond the general electric-signalling framework shared by mormyrids would be speculation rather than fact.

Breeding

Petrocephalus christyi has essentially not been bred in captivity, and its breeding biology in the wild is poorly known — this is true of the great majority of mormyrids, weakly electric fish whose reproduction has proven difficult to observe and difficult to replicate in an aquarium. What is understood from the family points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning tied to the rise of Congo Basin rivers and floodplains, when rising water opens up flooded vegetation and marginal habitat.

Some mormyrids are thought to guard their eggs among plants or root tangles for a period after spawning, but this has not been confirmed for Petrocephalus christyi specifically. No aquarium spawning has been documented for this species, and none of the sources reviewed describe eggs, fry or parental behaviour. Keepers should treat this as a fish essentially unbred in the hobby rather than expect a reliable protocol.

In the aquarium

Petrocephalus christyi is rarely offered in the aquarium trade, and what stock does appear is wild-caught from the Congo basin rather than captive-bred, since so little is known about how it reproduces in captivity. At a modest maximum size of around 3 in TL it does not present the size trap of the larger mormyrids or the big arowanas, but it is not an easy beginner fish: like other mormyrids, it is sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, and it does best in soft, acidic, well-filtered water that echoes the tannin-stained Congo streams it comes from, kept dim rather than brightly lit.

Groups are generally recommended for mormyrids over solitary fish, since a single individual can become withdrawn, but the same electric signalling that lets these fish communicate can also turn into aggression toward conspecifics in cramped quarters, so adequate space and cover — driftwood, roots, leaf litter — matter more than for many community fish. Sinking foods offered after dark suit its nocturnal habits. As with other copper-sensitive fish, medicate conservatively and avoid copper-based treatments.

Because so little has been published on this particular species' husbandry, the care notes above are drawn from the wider genus and family rather than from documented experience with Petrocephalus christyi itself, and should be treated as a starting point rather than a settled protocol.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Petrocephalus christyi as Least Concern. It is a widespread species across a large stretch of the Congo River basin, recorded from Pool Malebo to the upper Lualaba and across four countries — the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola — which supports a low extinction-risk assessment at the whole-range scale.

The Congo Basin overall faces long-term pressures from deforestation, damming and increasing fishing effort, and the wider Petrocephalus radiation in the basin is a reminder that many congeners are narrowly distributed and poorly surveyed even where this particular species is not. No population trend or specific threat has been documented for Petrocephalus christyi beyond its current Least Concern status.
