Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops furcidens was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1900. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantfishes and mormyrids — a strictly African family of roughly 200 species and one of two families (alongside the monotypic Gymnarchidae) making up the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues. Osteoglossiformes is among the oldest living lineages of teleost fish, its members named for a bony, toothed structure on the tongue that bites against a toothed plate on the roof of the mouth; the order's living representatives are scattered across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia, a deep-time relict of a once far more widespread radiation. The genus name Mormyrops combines Mormyrus — the name of a related mormyrid genus, itself derived from an old Greek name for a fish — with the Greek suffix -ops, "face" or "appearance", so the genus name reads roughly as "Mormyrus-like". The species epithet furcidens is built from the Latin furca, "fork", and dens, "tooth" — "forked tooth" — very likely referencing a distinctive forked or bifid tooth shape used to separate this species from its Mormyrops relatives, since dentition is one of the characters ichthyologists rely on to distinguish similar-looking mormyrids from one another.
Morphology
Mormyrops furcidens is a moderately sized mormyrid, reaching about 12.4 in total length according to FishBase — larger than some of its Congo-basin congeners but still well within reach of a substantial home aquarium, unlike the true giants of this order. FishBase places it at trophic level 3.2, consistent with a secondary consumer feeding on invertebrates, and rates it as a high-resilience, low-vulnerability species (a fishing vulnerability score of just 22 out of 100), suggesting a hardy, fast-turnover life history typical of small to mid-sized freshwater fish.
Like all mormyrids, M. furcidens carries a weakly electric organ near the base of the tail, firing a continuous train of brief, species-specific electrical pulses. A dense field of electroreceptors across the skin reads the distortions this field makes as it passes over rocks, plants, prey and other fish — an active sixth sense that substitutes for vision in the dark, often turbid Congo basin water where mormyrids do most of their foraging. As in other mormyrids, the dorsal and anal fins are long-based and set well back on the body, beating in a slow sculling wave that lets the fish hover, reverse and hold station with precision while it reads its own electric field rather than relying on fast swimming.
Habitat
Mormyrops furcidens is known from the middle Congo River basin, with records from both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like most of its family it is demersal, living close to the riverbed rather than in open water, where it can forage and shelter among sediment and submerged structure by day.
Congo basin rivers running through rainforest are characteristically blackwater: warm, roughly 75–82 °F, soft and only lightly mineralised, running from slightly acidic to near neutral, and often stained the tea-brown of dissolved plant tannins, with visibility further reduced by suspended sediment. This is precisely the visually impoverished environment the mormyrid electric sense evolved to read — where eyes struggle in the gloom, the electric organ discharge does not. Because they forage slowly, by touch and electric sense rather than by sight, mormyrids can easily lose out to faster, more visually driven tankmates at feeding time and are at real risk of slow starvation in a busy community; feeding on their own, or in a species-only or lightly stocked tank, is the safer approach.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Mormyrops furcidens has not been documented in the sources reviewed here, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than papering over. Captive breeding of mormyrids in general is described as difficult and only patchily understood — the family's reproduction is tied to seasonal flooding in the wild, and the fine details of courtship and spawning remain poorly known even for the handful of species that have occasionally reproduced under controlled conditions. Some mormyrids are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among plants with little organised nesting and limited parental care, but the specifics for this species have not been studied.
Given this, the honest position for a keeper is that Mormyrops furcidens should be regarded as effectively unbred in captivity: expect wild-caught stock, and treat any claim of routine home-tank spawning with real scepticism until better-documented accounts exist.
In the aquarium
Mormyrops furcidens is a specialist's fish rather than a casual community addition. General mormyrid care guidance calls for a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate — coarse or sharp material can damage the sensitive snout and skin — plenty of dark hiding places such as driftwood and caves, and dim lighting that respects its nocturnal habits. At around 12.4 in it does not carry the size trap of the true giants of this order, but it still needs a genuinely large aquarium; general elephantnose/mormyrid care guides suggest a minimum in the region of 75 US gallons for a single fish, scaling up considerably for a group.
Two care points follow directly from mormyrid biology generally and apply here. First, the electroreceptive, largely scaleless skin of mormyrids makes them more sensitive than average to poor water quality and to some medications — dose gently, avoid copper-based treatments where possible, and prioritise stability over aggressive dosing. Second, mormyrids can show real intraspecific aggression in a confined tank; guidance for related species suggests that a properly sized group (six or more, in a suitably large aquarium) tends to spread that aggression out and reduce stress better than a lone pair, though a single specimen alongside unrelated tankmates is also a workable option. A secure, well-fitted lid is essential, as mormyrids are capable jumpers, and nearly all specimens reaching the trade are wild-caught, so patient acclimation and quarantine deserve extra attention.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops furcidens as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 February 2009 (as reported by FishBase). It is known from a reasonable span of the middle Congo basin across the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and nothing in the available sources points to a specific, elevated threat to the species as a whole.
That said, a 2009 assessment is now well over a decade old, and the Congo basin faces ongoing pressure from habitat degradation, sedimentation and the general expansion of fishing and development along its river systems. This species does not appear to be a fixture of the aquarium trade in the way some other mormyrids are, so its exposure to collection pressure specifically is not well documented in the sources reviewed here; broader Congo-basin conservation trends are the more relevant long-term consideration.
