Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops sirenoides was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching row of teeth on the roof of the mouth. The Catalog of Fishes lists Mormyrops sirenoides as a valid name, with Boulenger's 1898 description as the type reference.
The genus Mormyrops holds roughly twenty species of weakly electric African fish, several of them large-growing, river-dwelling predators quite different in build from the small, chin-appendaged elephantnoses of genus Gnathonemus that dominate the aquarium trade. Mormyrops sirenoides is a Congo basin endemic and one of the less-studied members of the genus; much of what is known about its biology comes from general Mormyridae research rather than species-specific studies.
Morphology
Like other Mormyrops, M. sirenoides has an elongated, laterally compressed body, a blunt, rounded snout, and a small mouth armed with fine teeth — a build suited to probing and hunting in low light rather than to sight-feeding. It lacks the extended, trunk-like chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan) that characterises Gnathonemus and Campylomormyrus; the head profile is smoother and more torpedo-like. A single long-based dorsal fin sits well back on the body, roughly opposite an equally long anal fin, and the caudal peduncle is slender and set off from the body, ending in a forked tail.
The species reaches about 24.8 in total length, one of the larger sizes recorded within Mormyrops. As in all mormyrids, an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak, pulse-type electric-organ discharge (EOD), and an unusually large cerebellum processes the returning signal — mormyrids are noted for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, a "thinking fish" reputation earned largely through this electrosensory system rather than through any measured intelligence test.
Habitat
Mormyrops sirenoides is known from the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, part of the vast, still incompletely surveyed drainage of the Congo, the second-largest river system on Earth by discharge. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical species — a bottom-oriented fish of river channels and associated habitats rather than open water.
Middle Congo waters are generally warm, soft to moderately mineral-poor, and often stained by dissolved organic matter, conditions in which vision is limited and an electric sense is a genuine advantage. Detailed water-chemistry records specific to M. sirenoides are not available; husbandry guidance therefore draws on general Congo basin and Mormyridae parameters — warm (roughly 75–82 °F), soft, and close to neutral or slightly acidic, with stable conditions and minimal turbidity from suspended solids.
Feeding
As with other mormyrids, Mormyrops sirenoides is presumed to hunt aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — using its electric sense to locate prey in dark or turbid water rather than relying on eyesight, which in most mormyrids is functionally limited. Foraging activity in the genus is concentrated after dark.
Aquarium accounts of Mormyrops feeding, drawn from the wider Mormyridae literature since species-specific data for M. sirenoides are sparse, describe a preference for live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, blackworm, Tubifex, Daphnia and Cyclops — offered after lights-out. Newly imported fish can be reluctant feeders and may need live food to start; dry foods are rarely taken.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship in Mormyrops sirenoides specifically. Across the Mormyridae, the pulsed electric-organ discharge is thought to carry a courtship and species-recognition signal, letting fish distinguish potential mates of the correct species from the many other mormyrids that share the same rivers — a role plausible but not confirmed in this species.
What is known of wild mormyrid reproduction in general points to seasonal, rain-triggered spawning, with fish moving into shallow, vegetated margins as river levels rise. Whether Mormyrops sirenoides follows this same pattern has not been specifically documented; data for this species are sparse.
Breeding
Breeding in Mormyrops sirenoides is essentially unrecorded, and more broadly, mormyrid reproduction remains poorly understood even for the handful of species that have been bred at all. No published account of a deliberate captive spawning of this species turned up in the sources checked for this article.
Parental care in the genus is not well characterised; some mormyrids are thought to scatter eggs among vegetation and leave them, but the details for Mormyrops sirenoides are not documented. Anyone attempting to breed this species should treat it as genuinely experimental, not as a variation on an established protocol.
In the aquarium
Mormyrops sirenoides is very rarely offered in the trade and, given its size, is not a species for a typical community tank. A fish capable of reaching roughly 24.8 in total length needs a correspondingly large aquarium as an adult — anyone acquiring a juvenile should plan for that eventual size rather than the animal's size at purchase, a size trap common to many larger mormyrids and to Osteoglossiformes generally.
General mormyrid husbandry applies in the absence of species-specific guidance: dim lighting, a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate (coarse gravel can damage the sensitive skin and snout), stable, clean, copper-free water, and minimal turbidity. Mormyrids are notably sensitive to copper-, formalin-, dye- and salt-based medications and to poor water quality generally, so preventive care and a mature, well-filtered tank matter more than with many other African fish.
Individuals of this genus can be territorial toward their own kind and, given the adult size, are best combined with robust, similarly scaled tankmates rather than small fish that could be eaten. As with other mormyrids, a smooth-sided tank and secure lid reduce injury risk, since these fish can be skittish and prone to collision damage when startled.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops sirenoides as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2009. This reflects, in part, the relatively broad and still poorly surveyed Congo basin range attributed to the species rather than a close population study.
As with many Congo basin fish, detailed population trend data are limited, and Least Concern status should be read as an absence of documented decline rather than active monitoring. Broader Congo basin pressures — sedimentation, deforestation-linked habitat change and localized fishing pressure — are the relevant long-term concerns for the basin's fish community as a whole, even where a specific species such as M. sirenoides has not been separately assessed for trend.
