Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras cervinus was described by Wolfgang Rössel in 1962, in Senckenbergiana Biologica, from the rio Guaporé drainage of the upper Madeira system in South America. The epithet cervinus is Latin for 'deer-like' or 'stag-coloured,' the source of the English name 'deer-faced cory' — a nod to the shape and shading of the long-snouted head.
It is a long-snouted, 'saddle-snouted' species, the morphological type that the molecular phylogenies place in 'lineage 1' of the Corydoradinae. That lineage is the one anchored to the type species of Corydoras, and so when Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split the old mega-genus in their 2024 revision (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) — erecting or resurrecting Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus and others — the long-snouted lineage-1 species, C. cervinus among them, retained the name Corydoras in the strict sense. The specialist site Corydoras World keeps it in the Corydoras lineage, consistent with the Catalog of Fishes, so here the display and lineage genus are the same.
Morphology
The deer-faced cory is a small, slender, long-snouted species reaching about 2 in in standard length. It has the bony armour shared by the whole genus — two rows of overlapping scutes along each flank, a hard helmeted head and three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth — but in the elongate, produced-snout form rather than the short-faced shape of the common corys.
The coloration is subdued: a fawn to grey-brown ground, often with fine darker speckling and markings on the head and flanks that give the 'deer-faced' impression. As in all Corydoras, the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins carry stiff locking spines, and females grow somewhat larger and rounder than males. It is a quietly handsome, understated fish rather than a brightly patterned one.
Habitat
Corydoras cervinus is a fish of the upper rio Guaporé (called the río Iténez on the Bolivian side), a major tributary of the rio Madeira that forms part of the border between Rondônia and Mato Grosso in Brazil and the Bolivian lowlands. This is a warm, lowland tropical drainage of clear to slightly stained water, with sandy bottoms, leaf litter and submerged wood along its smaller channels and tributaries.
Like other corys it favours the shallower, quieter margins — stream edges, backwaters and slow reaches over soft sand. FishBase records it as a freshwater, demersal species of warm water, with a tolerance band of roughly 72–79 °F, a pH from acidic to slightly alkaline (about 6.0–8.0) and soft to moderately hard water. As a member of the genus it is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through its hindgut, an adaptation suited to warm, low-oxygen shallows.
Feeding
Corydoras cervinus is a benthic omnivore and detritivore, like its relatives. It forages over the sandy bottom of its Guaporé streams, using its barbels and downturned mouth to taste and sift the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans and organic detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gill openings as it works. There are no detailed wild dietary studies for the species, but its niche is the standard sand-sifting one. In captivity it takes the usual cory fare — sinking dried foods plus small live and frozen items such as bloodworm and Tubifex — and should not be left to scavenge leftovers alone.
Mating
Spawning has not been documented in detail for the deer-faced cory, but the genus is highly stereotyped in its reproduction. Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers without a pair bond, using the classic 'T-position': the male positions himself crosswise to the female's head, she takes up his milt, and a few adhesive eggs are clasped in a basket of her pelvic fins and pressed onto a cleaned leaf, stone or pane of glass. The process repeats a few eggs at a time until the clutch is distributed across the chosen surfaces. C. cervinus is expected to follow this same sequence.
Breeding
There is no established aquarium breeding record for Corydoras cervinus, and no published clutch sizes or fry data. By analogy with other Corydoras, the expectation is a clutch of adhesive eggs laid in small batches on hard surfaces, typically triggered by a cool, fresh water change simulating the rainy season, with no parental care — the adults will eat the eggs, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Fry would take microworm and baby brine shrimp after absorbing the yolk sac. Until someone spawns it and records the details, this remains an inference from the genus rather than a documented account.
In the aquarium
The deer-faced cory is an uncommon, somewhat specialist aquarium fish rather than a mass-market staple, but its care follows the well-established cory template. Keep it as a shoal of six or more — corys are genuinely stressed kept alone or in pairs — over soft fine sand, which is essential to protect the delicate barbels that coarse or sharp gravel erodes and infects. Provide cover such as wood and planting for security.
Water should be warm (about 72–79 °F), clean, well-filtered and well-oxygenated with gentle current and regular changes; it tolerates a broad pH and hardness range. It is a peaceful fish suited to a calm community of small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids, never with anything large enough to bully it. The usual cautions apply: the fin spines tangle in nets, so a cup is safer, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag, can kill the whole group — so transport with care.
Conservation
Corydoras cervinus was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018. It occupies the broad upper Guaporé/Iténez drainage, a relatively large and not yet heavily degraded part of the upper Madeira system, and there is no evidence of significant decline. That said, the wider Madeira basin faces growing pressure from dams, deforestation, agriculture and, in places, gold-mining and its associated mercury contamination, all of which degrade the shallow sandy stream habitats this fish depends on. For now the species is judged not threatened, but as a regional endemic of one drainage its long-term security is tied to the continued health of the Guaporé and its tributaries.
