Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras sarareensis was described by Bernd Dinkelmeyer in 1995, in the German aquarium literature, from specimens taken in the Río Sarare — a small right-bank tributary of the upper Río Guaporé in Mato Grosso, Brazil, which remains the type locality. The epithet sarareensis simply means 'from the Sarare.' It belongs to the family Callichthyidae and the subfamily Corydoradinae, the South American armoured catfishes, and to the long-snouted end of the morphological spectrum within that group.
For most of its history the species has sat in the very large genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803. That genus proved not to be a single natural lineage, and in 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a phylogeny-driven revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) that split it into several genera — among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster. Under that scheme C. sarareensis falls in Lineage 1, the cluster that retains the name Corydoras in the strict sense (anchored on the type species C. geoffroy), so its combination is unchanged: it remains Corydoras sarareensis. We keep the familiar heading and note the revision.
Morphology
This is a small, comparatively elongate cory with a noticeably extended, somewhat pointed snout — a long-snout body plan rather than the blunt, rounded head of the bronze-cory type. FishBase gives a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length; aquarist accounts report larger total lengths, with females reaching roughly 2.5 in and outsizing the males. Like all Corydoradinae it is armoured rather than scaled, two rows of overlapping bony plates running the length of each flank and meeting along the back, with three pairs of barbels fringing the downturned mouth.
The colour is a pale, sandy to greyish ground scattered with dark blotches and spots that vary in size and arrangement from fish to fish, broken by a darker band through the eye and patchier markings on the body — cryptic over the pale sand it lives on. Males in breeding condition develop a thickened, slightly bristled leading ray on the pectoral fin, a feature shared with several related long-snout corys. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff defensive spine.
Habitat
Corydoras sarareensis is known from the upper Río Guaporé (Iténez) basin, the system that forms part of the Brazil–Bolivia border before draining into the Madeira and ultimately the Amazon. The type series came from the Río Sarare in Mato Grosso, and the species is associated with the clear, warm headwater streams and their sandy margins typical of that drainage.
These are shallow, gently flowing waters over soft sand and fine sediment, with leaf litter and submerged wood, and the fish keeps to the bottom where it sifts the substrate. Reported parameters sit in the usual cory envelope — temperatures around 72–79 °F, a pH from acidic to near-neutral (about 6.0–7.5) and soft to moderately hard water. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air it absorbs through a vascularised hindgut, which helps it cope with warm, oxygen-poor pools.
Feeding
Like its relatives, C. sarareensis is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. Its long snout is a working tool: it ploughs and probes the sand, using the barbels to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, fallen seeds and the organic film of detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gill openings. In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets and tablets, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and whatever settles to the bottom — but a long-snout cory does best when given the soft sand it needs to forage as it evolved to.
Mating
No detailed spawning account specific to C. sarareensis has been published, but corys are uniform enough in their reproductive behaviour that the pattern is well understood. They are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site — a leaf, a stone, the glass — and the group becomes active; a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take milt into her mouth, fertilising the few eggs she carries in a basket formed by her clasped pelvic fins. She presses each small batch onto the cleaned surface, and the sequence repeats until dozens of sticky eggs are distributed.
Breeding
C. sarareensis has not been widely bred in captivity and no firm clutch figures are recorded for it, so what follows is the general Corydoras pattern its breeding can be expected to follow. Spawning is typically triggered by conditioning the group well and then performing a cool, generous water change to imitate the onset of the rainy season, raising oxygenation and dropping the temperature several degrees. The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on plants, wood and glass and receive no parental care — adults will eat them, so breeders remove either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk sac is absorbed.
In the aquarium
An uncommon but rewarding cory for the keeper who can source it. As a shoaling species it should be kept in a group of six or more — kept singly or in pairs it is stressed and inactive — in a tank whose floor space matters more than its height. Soft sand is effectively mandatory: long-snout corys feed by burying the snout, and sharp or coarse gravel abrades and infects the barbels, leaving the stubby, eroded faces that signal poor husbandry. Keep the substrate clean, the water warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with a gentle current and regular water changes. It is entirely peaceful and suits a community of tetras, small rasboras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids. As with all corys, handle with a container rather than a net (the fin spines snag), and move them carefully, since a badly stressed cory can release skin toxins that, in the small volume of a bag, can kill the whole group.
Conservation
Corydoras sarareensis was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018. The upper Guaporé it inhabits is still relatively well preserved compared with more developed Amazon basins, and the species is not a major target of the ornamental trade, so it faces no specific or immediate threat. The broad pressures on the region — agricultural expansion, deforestation and the resulting sedimentation and pollution of headwater streams — remain the realistic long-term concerns for a fish so tied to clean sand-bottomed waters.
