Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras steindachneri was described in 1973 by Isbrücker and Nijssen, the Dutch ichthyologists who between them named a large share of the world's corys. The species honours the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner, a prolific nineteenth-century describer of South American fishes. It belongs to the family Callichthyidae, the armoured catfishes, and within it to the subfamily Corydoradinae, the 'cory cats'.
For half a century it carried the name Corydoras steindachneri, and that is still the name under which it is bred and traded. The genus Corydoras, however, had swollen past 170 species and proved not to be a single natural group. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a phylogenomic revision that split it among several resurrected genera — Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster and others — and under that scheme this fish becomes Hoplisoma steindachneri. Hoplisoma, the largest of the new genera, gathers most of the short-snouted, deep-bodied 'classic' corys. The recombination is recent and not yet universal, and the aquarium world still says 'Corydoras steindachneri', so we keep that heading while noting the current combination.
Morphology
This is a small, short-snouted cory reaching roughly 2 in in standard length, with the deep, flat-bellied body and blunt, helmet-like head typical of the group. Like all Corydoradinae it is armoured rather than scaled: two overlapping rows of bony plates (scutes) run down each flank and meet in a ridge along the back. Three pairs of barbels fringe the downturned mouth, the sensory tools it uses to taste and sift the substrate.
The ground colour is a pale tan to pinkish body marked with darker blotching: a dark patch across the head through the eye and irregular dark markings along the flank, set off against clear to lightly dusky fins. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff leading spine — a defence that can deliver a sharp jab to a careless hand and tangle in a net. As in most corys, females grow larger and rounder than males, an outline that becomes obvious when a female is carrying eggs.
Habitat
Corydoras steindachneri is native to the coastal river drainages of south-eastern Brazil, in the states of Paraná and São Paulo — short, clear rivers such as the Ribeira de Iguape and the streams around Paranaguá that run off the Atlantic slope rather than into the great inland Amazon or Paraná–Paraguay systems. This coastal-drainage distribution makes it a comparatively narrow-ranged fish, unlike the continent-spanning bronze cory.
It is a bottom-dweller of quieter water: stream margins and pools over sand and fine gravel with leaf litter and submerged wood. These are warm, generally soft to moderately hard waters in the rough range of 72–79 °F, with pH from acidic to slightly alkaline. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation for warm, sometimes low-oxygen shallows.
Feeding
Like its relatives, Corydoras steindachneri is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works over the bottom continuously, burying its snout and barbels in sand to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and the organic film of detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gills. In the wild it forms part of the substrate-processing guild of its coastal streams; in the aquarium it takes sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp and anything its tankmates let fall, but should not be left to subsist on leftovers alone.
Mating
Corys are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and a distinctive, well-studied courtship. When a female is ready she cleans a site and the group becomes active; a male positions himself at right angles to her head in the classic 'T-position', and she appears to take his milt into her mouth. Sperm is then thought to pass rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, which she carries to the cleaned surface and presses into place. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until a clutch of sticky eggs is distributed across the chosen surfaces. Specific spawning observations for C. steindachneri are sparse, but it is expected to follow this group-wide pattern.
Breeding
There is little published aquarium breeding data specific to Corydoras steindachneri, but as a typical short-snouted Hoplisoma-group cory it is expected to spawn in the manner of the genus: a cool, large water change mimicking the onset of the rainy season triggers a group skewed toward more males than females, and adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on cleaned surfaces. The eggs receive no parental care — adults will eat them, so breeders move either the eggs or the parents — and hatch in a few days, the fry taking microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk is absorbed. Honest note: numbers, clutch size and reliable triggers for this particular species are not well documented.
In the aquarium
Corydoras steindachneri is an undemanding fish suited to a quiet community, but it has the same real requirements as any cory. First, it is a shoaling species and is genuinely stressed kept alone or in pairs — keep six or more, and the group rewards you with confident, busy activity. A footprint of around 23.5 in / 20 US gal or more suits a group; bottom area matters more than height.
Second, substrate is not decoration. Provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel: corys feed by sifting, and sharp or coarse gravel erodes and infects their barbels, leaving the stubby, blunted faces that are a tell-tale of poor husbandry. Keep the bottom clean. Water should be warm but not hot (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with regular changes; the fish tolerates a broad pH and hardness band. It is peaceful and makes an ideal companion for tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm community fish, never anything large enough to bully it. Two cautions worth knowing for any cory: the fin spines can catch in nets (a cup is safer), and a badly distressed cory can release skin toxins that, in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, can kill the whole group — so transport them with care.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Corydoras steindachneri as Data Deficient (assessed 2018) — there is not enough information on its population and trends to assign a category. That status is itself meaningful: as a coastal-drainage species of south-eastern Brazil, its range is far narrower than that of the wide-ranging trade corys, and the Atlantic-slope rivers of Paraná and São Paulo are among the most heavily urbanised and industrialised in the country, exposed to pollution, deforestation and water abstraction. Narrow-ranged fishes in disturbed catchments warrant attention, and the Data Deficient listing flags exactly the kind of species that can slip toward trouble unnoticed for want of monitoring.
