Geophagus iporangensis is a modestly sized, red-finned eartheater endemic to the coastal Ribeira de Iguape basin of southeastern Brazil, named for the town of Iporanga where its types were collected. Long treated as a subspecies of the pearl cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis, it belongs to the 'brasiliensis complex' of substrate-brooding eartheaters that sits apart from the true Amazonian Geophagus and still awaits a genus of its own. A subtropical fish of cooler, clearer mountain streams than its tropical relatives, it is a sand-sifting omnivore and a biparental substrate spawner that makes an unproblematic, colourful aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

The fish was described by the American naturalist John Diederich Haseman in 1911, in his annotated catalog of the cichlids collected by the Carnegie Museum's expedition to central South America (1907-1910). Haseman did not name a full species: he introduced it as Geophagus brasiliensis var. iporangensis, a named variety of the widespread pearl cichlid, based on material from the mountain streams of the Rio Ribeira de Iguapé at Iporanga, Brazil. The holotype (FMNH 54202, formerly Carnegie Museum CM 2792a) and a small series of paratypes (FMNH 54203) are preserved at the Field Museum in Chicago. For much of the twentieth century the name was simply sunk into synonymy with Geophagus brasiliensis (Gosse, 1976), and the two are genuinely close — iporangensis differs mainly in its more elongate, less deep body, smaller adult size, reduced pearl-spangling on the gill cover and fins, and a strong red wash across the unpaired fins. Sven Kullander resurrected and accepted it as a valid species, Geophagus iporangensis, in the 2003 Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, and subsequent authors have followed him. Phylogenetically the species is not a 'true' Geophagus at all: it falls in the brasiliensis group, a southern, substrate-brooding lineage that several workers (e.g. Argolo et al. 2020; dos Reis et al. 2020) write as 'Geophagus' iporangensis in quotation marks to flag that the group is destined for its own genus once the eartheaters are formally revised. The genus name therefore should be read as provisional.

Morphology

Geophagus iporangensis is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with the gently sloping forehead and protrusible, down-turned mouth typical of the eartheaters. Size reports vary widely with how they are taken: FishBase lists a maximum of 5 in standard length from the museum record, while hobbyists routinely grow it considerably larger as total length — commonly cited figures run to roughly 7–8 in, with some pond-raised males reported near 10 in. The body is less deep and more elongate than that of its close relative the pearl cichlid, and the adult size is smaller. Coloration is the species' selling point: a brassy to greenish-grey ground is overlaid with rows of pale blue-green pearl spangles, but these are noticeably less profuse on the cheek and gill cover than in Geophagus brasiliensis, and the dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry a strong red to orange-red flush that has earned it the trade name 'red-finned Brazilian pearl cichlid.' During courtship the fins of both sexes darken dramatically. Sexual dimorphism is present but moderate: males grow larger, develop longer dorsal and anal fin extensions, carry more spangling on the flanks, and old males may build a low nuchal hump on the forehead; ripe females are smaller, plumper-bodied and less ornamented.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the Ribeira de Iguape river basin, a coastal Atlantic-slope drainage straddling the states of São Paulo and Paraná in southeastern Brazil — its own freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 330, 'Ribeira de Iguape') within the Atlantic Forest region. Haseman's types came specifically from mountain streams near Iporanga, in the karst headwater country of the upper Ribeira, and the fish is generally associated with the clearer, flowing, rocky-and-sandy streams of that basin rather than with turbid lowland floodplain. This is subtropical, not equatorial, water: it lies well south of the Amazon and experiences a real seasonal temperature swing, so the fish tolerates and prefers distinctly cooler conditions than the tropical Amazonian Geophagus. Reported in-habitat and preferred temperatures sit around 75–79 °F, and the species remains active and healthy down into the high teens; it is robust enough to be over-wintered outdoors in temperate garden ponds in Europe so long as the water stays above about 50 °F. Water chemistry across the basin is soft to moderately mineralized and near-neutral; the species is recorded as tolerant of a wide pH band (roughly 6 to 8), with the softer, slightly acidic end (pH ~6.0-6.5, low hardness) typical of the forested headwaters. As an Atlantic-coastal stream fish it occupies shallow water — the documented habitat is wadeable mountain streams a metre or so deep — and works the sand and fine gravel of the bottom.

Feeding

Like all eartheaters, Geophagus iporangensis is a sand-sifter: it takes mouthfuls of substrate, sorts edible matter from the grains in the buccal cavity and over the gill rakers, and expels the cleaned sand. By this method it works the bottom for small benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, organic detritus and the occasional plant or algal fragment, making it a benthic omnivore with a carnivorous lean. FishBase estimates a low trophic level near 2.4, consistent with a generalist bottom-forager rather than a predator. In the community of its native streams it fills the eartheater niche of turning over and processing soft sediment. In captivity this translates into a fish that is never far from the substrate, constantly excavating, and that readily accepts almost any prepared food — sinking pellets, granules and cichlid sticks alongside live and frozen fare — which is part of why it is regarded as an easy, undemanding species to feed.

Mating

Outside of breeding Geophagus iporangensis is a sociable, broadly peaceful fish that does well in a group and establishes a loose hierarchy through display and minor sparring rather than serious fighting. Pair formation follows the familiar cichlid pattern: from a group, fish pair off, and a courting pair intensifies its colours — most strikingly, the fins of both sexes darken markedly — as the male and female test one another and jointly select and clean a spawning site. Because the species pairs more reliably from a group, keepers are advised to raise five or more young fish together and let pairs sort themselves out, rather than trying to force two adults together. With pairing comes a sharp change in temperament: the otherwise mild fish becomes distinctly territorial and will actively defend the chosen nest site against tankmates, the only context in which this species shows real aggression.

Breeding

Geophagus iporangensis is a biparental substrate spawner — not a mouthbrooder. This is a key point of natural history that separates the brasiliensis-group eartheaters from the larvophilous mouthbrooding Geophagus of the Amazon: iporangensis and its relatives lay their eggs on a firm surface and guard them in the open, in the manner of the pearl cichlid. The pair cleans a site and the female deposits an adhesive clutch which both parents then tend, fanning and defending it; in practice fish of this complex often favour a sheltered, cave-like spot with a small opening as the nest. Reported clutches run from roughly 80 to 400 eggs depending on the size and age of the female, and the fish will spawn while still quite small. The eggs are small and hatch in about three to four days depending on temperature; the larvae become free-swimming roughly another three to four days after that, at which point the parents lead and guard a mobile shoal of fry. Parental care is attentive and both parents participate, defending the young vigorously. The fry are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp as a first food and grow quickly, often reaching around 1 in within a couple of months. Breeding in the aquarium is considered straightforward, and seasonal outdoor spawnings occur readily in temperate garden ponds over summer.

In the aquarium

Geophagus iporangensis is an undemanding, rewarding aquarium fish and a good choice for a keeper wanting an eartheater without the soft-water fussiness or the size of the larger Amazonian species. A young group can be started in a tank of around 55 US gal (a 'breeder'-format four-foot footprint), but because the fish reaches a useful adult size and digs constantly, adults are better served by a four- to six-foot tank; 55 US gal is a realistic minimum for a maintained pair or small group. The single most important furnishing is a deep bed of fine sand: this is a compulsive sand-sifter, and a sand substrate lets it feed and behave naturally while sparing its gills the abrasion that coarse gravel can cause. Expect plants to be uprooted and the décor rearranged, so anchor or pot any plants and choose robust species. Provide rockwork, roots and a few sheltered, cave-like nooks with small openings — both to break sightlines and because pairs prefer such spots to spawn.

Water chemistry is forgiving. The species has been kept successfully anywhere from about pH 6 to pH 8, so it does not require the soft, acidic water that many wild Amazonian eartheaters demand; stable, clean water matters more than hitting a precise pH. It is a subtropical fish that prefers cooler conditions than tropical Geophagus — roughly 72–79 °F is ideal, and it tolerates temperatures well into the high teens, which makes it a candidate for an unheated or seasonally cool tank and for outdoor ponds in summer. The chief husbandry demand is water quality: it is a robust, heavy-feeding fish that produces a lot of waste for its size, so generous filtration and frequent, substantial water changes are strongly advised. Diet is easy, as the fish accepts virtually all prepared and frozen foods sifted from a sand bottom.

Temperament makes it an unusually good community eartheater. Away from breeding it is peaceful and can be combined with a wide range of similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates — it has even been kept alongside robust African cichlids without trouble — provided companions are not so small as to be swallowed or so boisterous as to bully it. The one caveat is intraspecific and spawning-related: a settled pair becomes territorial and will defend its nest, and persistent hierarchy disputes among conspecifics can wear down weaker individuals, so provide hiding places and enough space, and consider separating a breeding pair (or moving the others out) once spawning begins, since fry survival in a community tank is essentially nil. Overall it rates as an easy, beginner-friendly cichlid that is far less common in the trade than the pearl cichlid but well worth seeking out.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus iporangensis as Least Concern (assessed 18 May 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio); published 2023). It carries no CITES listing. As a basin-restricted endemic of a single coastal drainage, however, it is inherently more exposed than the wide-ranging Amazonian eartheaters: the Ribeira de Iguape lies in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, one of the most heavily impacted biomes in South America, and Atlantic-slope coastal basins face pressure from deforestation, agriculture, urban and mining pollution, water abstraction, dams and the introduction of non-native fishes. None of these is documented as an imminent threat to this particular species, and it remains reasonably common within its range, but its confinement to one basin means its long-term status is tied directly to the health of the Ribeira de Iguape system. It is taken in small numbers for the ornamental trade — including from European pond-bred stock — at levels that are not flagged as a population-level concern.
