Taxonomy & naming
L003 is a code in the L-number system that DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified to species. A trade code is not a scientific name, and an undescribed form has no describing authority and no type specimens. The Südamerikafans registry lists the fish as Baryancistrus sp. "L 3", and PlanetCatfish as Baryancistrus sp. (L003); no other code is filed with it. The registry records the trade name Kieser Pleco, but where the name comes from is not on record. Its bibliography has a single entry, the Miniatlas L-Welse (Werner, Lechner and Schmidt, 2005).
Morphology
The registry gives about 12 in total length for L003 but no written description, so its diagnostic characters are not on record. One similar fish is listed, Baryancistrus niveatus (L26), and how the two are told apart is not recorded. Like other loricariids, it is a suckermouth armoured catfish with a body covered in bony plates.
Habitat
The registry places L003 in the Rio Tocantins drainage near Cametá, in the state of Pará, Brazil, and classes the water type as clearwater. No substrate, depth or flow details are on record. Loricariids of this kind are generally associated with well-oxygenated water, current and rock or wood cover; that is genus-level background and not an observation for L003.
Feeding
Registry data put L003 among the predominantly herbivorous plecos and note that it eats aquarium plants, which matters in a planted tank. In the aquarium that points to vegetable-based sinking foods and fresh vegetables. Nothing is on record about what the fish eats in the wild.
Mating
The registry's sexing note is given at genus level: watch the head and the pectoral-fin rays. It does not say what differs between the sexes, so nothing more can be added. Baryancistrus are typically cave spawners in which the male guards the eggs and larvae in the cave, and the registry rates the cave requirement as standard for the genus. No spawning behaviour has been described for L003.
Breeding
The registry marks breeding of L003 as unknown, so no aquarium spawning is on record. That is an absence of records, not evidence that the fish cannot be bred. Clutch size, spawning site and fry development are all undocumented. The genus-typical pattern, with a male guarding eggs and larvae in a cave, is background only and has not been confirmed for this form.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range for L003 is 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, and it recommends a tank about 59 in long. These are aquarium figures, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, although a single fish is possible. Clean, well-oxygenated water with rock or wood caves suits plecos of this kind, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common. The registry notes that it eats aquarium plants, which is relevant to a planted tank.
Conservation
L003 has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is Not Evaluated; an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. For Brazilian export the registry notes it is on Brazil's 2012 positive list (species cleared for ornamental export) and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. Population size is not on record. In general, collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats.
