Taxonomy & naming
L002 is a trade code, not a scientific name. DATZ, the German magazine, started the L-number system in 1988 for imported loricariids that could not yet be identified; an undescribed form has no describing authority and no type specimens. Older hobby literature identified L002 as Peckoltia vermiculata. The registry and PlanetCatfish now list it as Panaqolus sp. (L002), and this page follows them. P. vermiculata is a separate, described species with its own page in the atlas. PlanetCatfish treats L002 and L074 as the same fish, although the registry itself lists L 74 among the similar catfishes. Trade names on record are Tiger peckoltia (with Peckoltia in quotation marks) and the German Tigerharnischwels. The registry's bibliography lists the Welsatlas 2 (2005), Seidel's Back to Nature handbook (2008) and the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005).
Morphology
According to the registry, L002 reaches about 5 in total length. What sets it apart from other Panaqolus forms is not on record, and the trade names Tiger peckoltia and Tigerharnischwels only evoke a tiger-like pattern; they are not a description. What the registry does supply is a list of look-alikes: Peckoltia amjikin (L38), Panaqolus L74, L169, L271, L374, L397 and L403, Panaqolus claustellifer (L306) and Panaqolus tankei (L398). Like other loricariids, it is covered in bony plates bearing odontodes, the small tooth-like spines of the skin.
Habitat
Registry data put L002 in the Rio Tocantins drainage near Cametá, in the state of Pará, Brazil, and record the water as clearwater. Substrate, cover and other microhabitat details are not on record, nor are its depth range or seasonal movements, and the registry lists no fishes found together with it.
Feeding
In the registry L002 is classed as mainly a wood-eater (Holzfresser), so driftwood is part of what it eats and not only a place to sit. Plant matter is flagged as taken too. In an aquarium that points to untreated wood left permanently in the tank, with plant-based sinking foods and vegetables alongside.
Mating
The registry gives sexing only at genus level: in Panaqolus, males carry heavier odontode growth and a slimmer waist. Cave spawning, with the male guarding the eggs and larvae in the cave, is typical of the genus but has not been recorded for L002 itself; the registry's genus-level cave note reads "standard". Nothing about courtship or spawning behaviour of this particular form is on record.
Breeding
Captive breeding has been reported, and the registry points to L-Welse.com for the report. Clutch size, incubation and fry rearing are not given. The registry also names Panaqolus sp. L397 as a known hybrid partner. Nothing about wild spawning is on record.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range is 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 31.5 in; these are aquarium guidance, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. As is typical of the genus, it needs clean, well-oxygenated water with some current, caves or crevices and a supply of wood, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated L002, and an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. According to the registry, it is on Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general, but nothing specific is on record for this form's locality.
