Tapajos-Tigerharnischwels, the Tapajós tiger armoured catfish, is the German trade name of Panaqolus sp. L271, an undescribed wood-eating pleco recorded from the Rio Tapajós between Pimental and Itaituba in Pará, Brazil. Otherwise it is traded under its L-number alone.

What's in the name

Panaqolus
  • PanaqueAmerican Spanish (Venezuelan indigenous) — local common name for wood-eating catfishes, applied to the parent genus
  • -olusLatin — diminutive suffix, denoting smaller stature than Panaque
L271
  • L271hobby code (L-number) — a number from the L-number system that the German magazine DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified to species; it stands in for a species epithet until the fish is formally described

Taxonomy & naming

L271 has no formal name. It belongs to the L-number series DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified: a code rather than a species name, with no describing authority and no type specimens. The registry files it as Panaqolus sp. "L 271" and PlanetCatfish as Panaqolus sp. (L271); neither gives any other code for it. The registry's bibliography is short: Welsatlas 2 (2005), the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005), Tanke's overview of the genus and DATZ 7/2013.

Morphology

The registry puts L271 at about 5 in total length. What distinguishes it from other Panaqolus is not on record. Four similar catfishes are listed in the registry: Panaqolus L2, Panaqolus L169 (LDA 1), Panaqolus claustellifer (L306 / LDA 64) and Panaqolus L403. Like all loricariids it is covered in bony plates, with small tooth-like odontodes on plates and fins.

Habitat

L271 is recorded from the Rio Tapajós between Pimental and Itaituba, Pará, Brazil. The registry enters the river system as the Amazon and the water as clearwater; substrate and cover are not on record. One fish is listed as found together with it: Peckoltia sp. "LDA 62".

Feeding

By the registry's classification L271 is a wood-eater (Holzfresser), so driftwood is part of the diet and should stay in the tank. Plant matter is also marked as eaten. No detailed feeding notes exist for this form; aquarium feeding follows the diet class, with plant-based sinking foods and vegetables offered alongside the wood.

Mating

Male Panaqolus have stronger odontode growth and a slimmer waist; the registry gives this sexing rule at genus level. Spawning typically takes place in a cave, with the male guarding the eggs and larvae. That pattern is inferred from the genus and has not been recorded for L271 itself, and no courtship detail is on record.

Breeding

Captive breeding of L271 is reported in the registry, which cites L-Welse.com. There is no further account of the spawning, and clutch size, incubation time and fry rearing are not given. No hybrids are listed for this form, and nothing about wild spawning is on record.

In the aquarium

For aquarium keeping the registry gives 77–84 °F and pH 5–7, plus a recommended tank length of 31.5 in; the figures are guidance, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, with a single fish also possible. Typical of the genus, it wants clean, well-oxygenated water with current, caves or crevices and wood to rasp, and some territorial behaviour toward other plecos is to be expected.

Conservation

L271 is Not Evaluated by the IUCN, as an undescribed form cannot be assessed before it is named. The registry records it on Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export and not on the 2020 negative list. More generally, trade collection and river engineering affect some L-number habitats; no threat is documented for this form's stretch of the Tapajós.
