Apistogramma eunotus is a dwarf cichlid of the western Amazon, described in 1981 from the Río Ucayali drainage of eastern Peru and sometimes traded as the blue-cheek dwarf cichlid. Barely two inches long, it is a cave-spawning leaf-litter fish of clear- and whitewater streams along the Andean piedmont, and a notably even-tempered member of an otherwise feisty genus. Here is the catch worth knowing before you buy: the true Apistogramma eunotus from the type locality has rarely reached the trade, so the fish most aquarists keep as "eunotus" is usually one of several closely related forms, correctly written Apistogramma cf. eunotus. It is the namesake of the large eunotus complex within the regani lineage, an assemblage whose boundaries are genuinely unsettled.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma eunotus was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1981, in Bonner Zoologische Beiträge (32: 183–194), under the title "Description of a new species of Apistogramma from the upper Amazonas basin." The type locality is the Río Ucayali system near Pucallpa, in the Loreto/Ucayali region of eastern Peru. Kullander revisited the species in his 1986 monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru (Swedish Museum of Natural History), still the standard reference for the western-Amazonian apistos.

The genus name pairs the Greek apisto (uncertain) with gramma (line or marking) — a nod to the variable, hard-to-read lateral markings that make Apistogramma so difficult to sort. Within the genus, Apistogramma eunotus belongs to the regani species-group of the broader regani lineage: the relatively deep-bodied, single-bar dwarf cichlids that also include Apistogramma regani, Apistogramma cruzi and Apistogramma ortegai. It gives its name to the eunotus complex, a large cluster of geographically replacing forms strung along the Ucayali whose boundaries are genuinely unsettled.

That unsettledness shapes how the name is used in the hobby. As the longtime Apistogramma authority Mike Wise has noted on the apistogramma.com forum, the true Apistogramma eunotus from the type-locality area is a comparatively deep-bodied fish that has rarely, if ever, entered the aquarium trade; most exported fish sold under the name are slimmer forms from farther up the Ucayali, correctly written Apistogramma cf. eunotus and carrying trade tags like "Orange-tail," "Santa Ana" or "Willy." Kullander himself left open the possibility that these forms grade into one another as a single polymorphic species, so treat any "Apistogramma eunotus" label — in a shop or a database — as provisional. The same caution applies to common names: "blue-cheek dwarf cichlid" is a loose trade tag that hobbyists have attached to several different apistos over the years, which is why this profile lists no settled English common name.

Morphology

This is a small fish. Kullander's material gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length, and most aquarium specimens are smaller — mature males run roughly 2.5–3 in (2.5–3 in) total length, females noticeably shorter. Reports of 3–4 in that circulate on some care pages are best read as genus-wide generalizations rather than measured eunotus.

The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, the regani-group profile, marked by a single dark midlateral band from the gill cover to the caudal base and a row of lateral blotches. The epithet eunotus — Greek for "good-backed" or "high-backed" — captures the steep dorsal profile of large males, the very feature Kullander singled out when naming the fish. The "blue-cheek" tag comes from the iridescent blue-green sheen many males carry across the gill cover and lower face, set against a tan-to-greyish body. Males grow larger, extend more pointed dorsal and anal fins, and intensify in color when displaying; females stay smaller and rounder, and — as in most apistos — flush an assertive lemon-to-golden yellow overlaid with bold black markings when guarding eggs or fry.

Telling Apistogramma eunotus from its look-alikes is genuinely hard, resting on subtle features: body depth, the exact shape and break of the black markings, and caudal coloration. Kullander's 1986 keys separate it from Apistogramma regani, Apistogramma cruzi and the other regani-group species on counts and markings, but in practice even experienced keepers fall back on "cf." and the collection locality.

Habitat

Apistogramma eunotus is endemic to the western Amazon basin. FishBase summarizes its range as tributaries of the Ucayali and Amazon (Solimões) rivers, with records reaching the Río Yavarí on the Peru–Brazil border and the Río Japurá in Brazil; the best-documented populations sit in the middle and lower Río Ucayali around Pucallpa and between Nauta and Iquitos in Peru.

Unlike the blackwater specialists of the Río Negro, eunotus lives mainly in clear- and whitewater streams draining the Andean piedmont, though Kullander recorded it from black-, clear- and whitewater alike. These are small forest creeks and stream margins rather than open river: shallow, structurally complex water over sand, carpeted in leaf litter and threaded with submerged wood and root tangles. Keepers who have collected the eunotus forms in Peru describe habitats thick with leaf litter and algae-coated wood — visually mulmy, not the clean "display" blackwater of aquarium fashion.

The water chemistry is correspondingly milder than the extreme soft-acid Río Negro biotopes. FishBase lists a near-neutral pH of about 7.0–7.5 and hardness from around 10 dH, with temperatures in the tropical 73–86 °F (73–86 °F) band — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water carrying some dissolved bases, consistent with a piedmont rather than a deep-blackwater origin. That mild, forgiving chemistry is part of why eunotus has a reputation as a hardy "biotope" apisto: in the aquarium it adapts to anything from about pH 6 to 7.5 and warm temperatures around 77–82 °F (77–82 °F), provided the water stays clean and stable, and struggles only in genuinely hard, alkaline tap conditions.

Feeding

Like the genus as a whole, Apistogramma eunotus is a benthic micropredator — a small, bottom-oriented hunter that works the leaf litter and sediment for tiny prey. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, the value expected for a carnivore of small invertebrates. Direct stomach-content studies of eunotus are scarce, but the natural history is well established across closely studied congeners: Apistogramma take mouthfuls of substrate and detritus and pick out aquatic insect larvae (midge and other dipteran larvae especially), micro-crustaceans, worms and other small benthic invertebrates.

In its leaf-litter community the fish is both hunter and hunted — forage for larger cichlids, characins and other stream fishes — which helps explain the genus's strategy of small size, cryptic patterning and intensive parental care over sheer fecundity. It works the litter-and-wood microhabitat low in the water column, leaving the open surface to hatchetfish and other upper-water shoalers; keepers exploit that same partitioning when they build community tanks around it. Because apistos feed downward, captive fish do best on small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, microworms, blackworm — and sinking micro-pellets rather than floating flake, while the tiny fry need infusoria, rotifers or vinegar eels before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp.

Mating

Where eunotus stands apart among dwarf cichlids is temperament. The Apistogramma authority Mike Wise describes the eunotus forms as "casually polygamous" and, on the whole, less aggressive than the strongly polygamous, territory-hungry species such as Apistogramma cacatuoides, Apistogramma agassizii and Apistogramma allpahuayo — and far calmer than known scrappers like Apistogramma barlowi. A male breeds with whatever female is willing rather than aggressively driving off unready mates, a meaningfully gentler dynamic, with the usual caveat that individuals vary.

The breeding social structure follows the genus pattern: a male holds and patrols a larger territory that overlaps the smaller spawning territories of one or more females, and each female commits to a cave within it. Courtship ends with the female leading her chosen male to that cave to spawn. Experienced keepers stress that what reads as "aggression" in apistos is usually a symptom of a poorly broken-up tank rather than the species itself — give a small tank sightline breaks, caves and leaf litter and a pair or casual harem settles without the chasing seen in bare setups, which is exactly why eunotus counts as one of the more peaceable community apistos.

Breeding

Apistogramma eunotus is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with female-dominated parental care — the classic apisto pattern. FishBase records that the eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave (in the wild a hollow under wood, a leaf or a crevice), with the female tending the clutch; typical reported clutches run on the order of 100–150 eggs. She guards and fans the eggs, then shepherds the free-swimming fry, flaring into her yellow-and-black brooding dress to drive off intruders, while the male holds and patrols the larger surrounding territory.

For a dwarf cichlid it breeds readily. Keepers on apistogramma.com report pairs spawning within weeks of arrival with no special trigger beyond clean, soft, slightly acidic water — one bred a pair in straight RO at around pH 7 "just by feeding them." The fish are bold rather than shy, and devoted parents: one keeper recounted a male in a large community tank holding back heckel discus and altum angelfish to protect a brood. As anecdotes these are corroborating signal, not measured data, but the picture is consistent across independent reports — eunotus is among the more forgiving apistos to spawn. A pair does well in a tank from about 20 gallons (a 30-inch / 29.5 in footprint) upward, furnished with sand, generous leaf litter and wood, spawning caves or coconut shells, and floating plants to dim the light; anything sharing the lower water column may be displaced once a pair commits to a brood.

In the aquarium

The cf. eunotus forms that actually reach the trade sit at the forgiving end of the genus, well suited to a keeper's first apisto.

Water: its piedmont origin means a wider chemistry window than most apistos tolerate — pH anywhere from about 6.0 to 7.5 works, and moderately hard tap water (up to roughly 10–12 °dH) is acceptable, though soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best color. Aim for 77–82 °F (77–82 °F); the full wild range of 73–86 °F on FishBase is broader than most keepers need to manage. The one non-negotiable is water quality — small apistos are sensitive to the nitrate and ammonia thrown off by decaying organic matter, so regular partial water changes (30–40 % weekly) and a well-matured filter matter far more than hitting a precise pH.

Tank & aquascape: a single pair does well in a footprint of about 24 × 12 inches (60 × 12 in), roughly a 20-gallon long; a trio (one male, two females) or a loose harem wants a 30-inch (29.5 in) footprint or larger so that females can hold separate cave territories. Fine sand is the substrate of choice, since these fish sift the bottom and coarse gravel hampers that. Scatter dry oak or Indian almond leaves across the floor — the litter tints and gently acidifies the water as it breaks down, harbors microfauna for the fry, and gives the psychological shelter that keeps the fish settled. Add one or two spawning caves (a coconut half, a small clay pot on its side, a ceramic tube) and a few pieces of bogwood to break sightlines, plus floating plants such as Salvinia or Ceratopteris to dim the light; a shaded, structured tank yields far better color than a bright, bare one.

Tankmates: think "upper water, non-competitive." Small schooling characins up in the middle and top of the column — hatchetfish, pencilfish, small tetras — are the classic dither fish, their relaxed open-water behavior signaling to the apistos that no predator is near, which cuts hiding and encourages foraging and display. Other bottom-dwellers that compete for caves or territory — corydoras in a tight planted tank, other dwarf cichlids, anything mapping onto the same lower microhabitat — are riskier and work only in larger tanks with generous cover. Anything large enough to eat the apistos, or aggressive enough to stress them into hiding (large geophagines, cichlasomines), is incompatible. Snails and small shrimp are generally fine between spawns, though a brooding female will hunt shrimp.

Breeding & sexing: the eunotus forms spawn readily (see Breeding), so the practical care task is sexing and stocking. Males are noticeably larger, high-backed, with extended pointed dorsal and anal fins and the blue-green cheek sheen; females are smaller, rounder and plainer until they switch to the bright yellow-and-black brooding pattern. Juveniles of both sexes look alike up to a few centimeters, so the standard move is to buy a group of six and let a pair form rather than pay for a sexed pair. Common mistakes cluster around a spawn: removing the male too early (usually unnecessary here), overfeeding the adults and fouling the water just as fry are most vulnerable, and crowding in tankmates the female must then chase — any of which can push a pair to eat the brood. On the whole, Apistogramma eunotus is genuinely beginner-tolerant for a dwarf cichlid: master clean, warm, soft-to-moderate water, adequate cover and sensible tankmates, and it asks far less than the delicate blackwater species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma eunotus as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 28 October 2020 (assessor R. G. Frederico), on the strength of its wide western-Amazon range and the absence of documented species-level threats. (Older hobby and reference pages, including the Cichlid Room Companion profile last updated in 2007, still call it "not evaluated" — that simply predates the 2020 assessment.) It is collected for the ornamental trade and rated by FishBase as of commercial aquarium and minor fisheries interest, but nothing indicates that collection is depleting wild stocks: its fishing vulnerability is low and its population doubling time short.

Set in context, that Least Concern status is the norm for Amazonian cichlids, not the exception. The Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, 2003) and the classic ecological syntheses of the basin (Lowe-McConnell, 1991) show the western Amazon to be extraordinarily species-rich and, for most small fishes, broadly distributed — so a wide-ranging leaf-litter dwarf cichlid faces ornamental-trade collection and habitat change far more than any risk of collapse. The genus is heavily worked by the aquarium trade, Apistogramma being among the most species-rich and most-collected Neotropical cichlid groups, yet that ornamental fishery is also argued — through programs like Project Piaba — to give riverside communities an economic stake in keeping forests and streams intact.

The real, basin-scale pressures on a fish like eunotus are habitat-mediated: deforestation and agriculture in the Ucayali piedmont, road-building and sedimentation, gold-mining mercury, and hydropower and channel alteration that degrade the small clear- and whitewater streams it depends on. None of this currently threatens the species' survival, and it would overstate the case to imply otherwise — Apistogramma eunotus is genuinely Least Concern. But its security rests on the continued health of countless small Andean-piedmont creeks, and the chief open question is taxonomic: because the "eunotus" we talk about is really a complex of poorly delimited forms, some narrow-range populations could carry risks a single basin-wide Least Concern listing cannot see. The practical corollary for breeders is to buy from a known-locality source and keep forms separate, since cf.-eunotus lines are easily crossed.
