Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina huallagae was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986, in his monograph 'Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru' (Swedish Museum of Natural History), on page 290 with figures 126-127 and plate 31. That same work erected the genus Bujurquina itself, with Bujurquina moriorum as its type species, to gather up an assemblage of biparentally custodial 'primitive' or delayed mouthbrooding acaras that had previously been lumped into Aequidens; Kullander described thirteen new Bujurquina species in one stroke, several of which earlier authors and aquarists had confounded with Bujurquina syspilus or Bujurquina vittata. The holotype (ANSP 158171, Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia) was taken near Tingo María, about a quarter-mile above the Río Huallaga, in the Huánuco department of Peru, with an extensive paratype series spread across the ANSP, Geneva (MHNG), Stockholm (NRM) and Bonn (ZFMK) collections. The species name is a toponym, a Latinized form of the Río Huallaga, the upper Amazon tributary that drains its type region; the genus name Bujurquina derives from 'bujurqui' (also rendered 'bufurque'), a local Peruvian vernacular word for these cichlids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both treat it as valid. Its precise range is unsettled (see Habitat): the Catalog of Fishes places it in the Marañón drainage of the western Amazon in Ecuador and Peru, the IUCN assessment lists Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, while the ETYFish Project reads Kullander's account as describing a fish apparently endemic to the Huallaga drainage. Bujurquina is now recognized as one of the most species-rich and widely distributed cichlid genera of the western Amazon, and recent work (Říčan et al. 2023) argues that within each major sub-basin its species sort out along an elevation gradient, with repeated, parallel divergence in body shape between higher- and lower-elevation forms.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of 3.5 in standard length (snout to tail base), so even large adults are only a few inches long and considerably smaller than the more familiar banded acaras of the aquarium trade. The body is the typical Bujurquina shape, moderately deep and laterally compressed, with the genus's hallmark colour pattern built from a dark mid-lateral band, a row of flank blotches, a suborbital (cheek) stripe, and a caudal-peduncle spot. In Paul Loiselle's annotated key to the Peruvian Bujurquina, huallagae keys out among the thin-lipped species whose soft dorsal fin is well marked with light spots and whose lateral band runs all the way back to the caudal peduncle; it is separated from its near-twin Bujurquina moriorum by a faintly pigmented predorsal spot on the nape and a caudal-peduncle spot sitting mid-basally (bisected by the midlateral line) rather than as a narrow bar held entirely above it. These are subtle, jar-and-callipers distinctions rather than field marks, which is exactly why the genus is so often misidentified. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in detail for this particular species; across Bujurquina the pattern is consistent and almost certainly applies here, with males growing somewhat larger and developing extended, filamentous trailing rays on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins (the 'flag' streamers that give some congeners their trade names) while ripe females stay smaller, plainer and rounder-bodied.
Habitat
Bujurquina huallagae is a fish of the upper Amazon's Andean piedmont rather than the lowland floodplain. FishBase characterizes its habitat as rivers with swift, clear water over bottoms of sand, rubble, gravel and mud, and the IUCN assessment records it from clear-water streams at altitudes of roughly 100 to 600 metres above sea level. Field surveys in northeastern Peru (Ortega et al. 2007) turned up 211 specimens distributed across the Tarapoto, Pongo, Cóndor-Pumayacu and Yurimaguas areas, indicating it is locally common in its range. The exact extent of that range is where the sources part ways, and the article does not paper over it: the type series comes from the Huallaga around Tingo María and Tarapoto (FishBase, Kullander 1986); Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes broadens it to the Marañón drainage of the western Amazon in both Ecuador and Peru; and the IUCN adds Colombia and a record from the Putumayo at the Colombia-Peru border. Some of this discrepancy reflects the genuine difficulty of separating Bujurquina species, so reports from outside the Huallaga are best read as 'Bujurquina huallagae or a close relative.' No in-situ pH or hardness measurements specific to this species appear in the literature; the swift, clear Andean-foothill streams of the upper Huallaga are characteristically soft and close to neutral, and the values given in the fact box are flagged as habitat-typical estimates for that setting rather than published readings for the fish itself. FishBase reports a temperature range of 72–79 °F, cooler than the lowland Amazon and consistent with its mid-elevation home; depth is not separately tabulated, so the shallow stream margins it occupies (on the order of 0–7 ft) are given as a habitat-typical figure.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment describes Bujurquina huallagae as an omnivore with a leaning toward frugivory and insectivory, foraging by day in clear water. That fits the ecology of a small acara working the bed of a fast, rubble-bottomed stream: picking aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates from the substrate and among the gravel, and taking fallen fruit and seeds when the seasonal forest delivers them to the water. FishBase's model-derived trophic level of about 4.2 implies a more carnivorous diet than the 'omnivore' label alone suggests, but that figure is an estimate inferred from food-item categories rather than a measured value from gut-content analysis, and for a fish of this size and habitat the honest summary is a generalist invertebrate-and-fruit feeder. In the stream community it is a small mid-level forager rather than a top predator.
Mating
Detailed courtship has not been described for Bujurquina huallagae specifically, but the behaviour is highly conserved across Bujurquina and is well documented in close relatives such as Bujurquina vittata, so the genus pattern is the reliable guide. These are pair-bonding cichlids: a male and female form a monogamous pair, set up a territory (often in the middle of their stretch of water) and defend it jointly. Keepers of congeners describe the pairs as nervous and fast-moving but only mildly aggressive toward other fish, more inclined to dart and flee than to bully tankmates. Pair formation can be a drawn-out business, with surplus females driven off before a single pair settles. Once bonded, both partners share the work of territory defence, nest preparation and the prolonged parental care that follows.
Breeding
Bujurquina are biparental delayed mouthbrooders, and this is the single most distinctive thing about the genus. Rather than gluing eggs to a fixed rock or excavating a pit, a pair typically spawns on a movable object, a fallen leaf, a piece of bark or a twig, that they can physically pick up and relocate; congeners in aquaria readily substitute a loose flat surface or the wall of a half-coconut shell. The eggs are guarded and fanned on this surface by both parents (Bujurquina vittata lays up to about 400 eggs), and the substrate itself is shuttled around the territory, apparently in response to predators or changing water levels. This is the 'delayed' part of delayed mouthbrooding: the eggs spend a substrate-guarding phase first, and only once they hatch do the parents take the larvae and, later, the free-swimming fry into their mouths, spitting them back out to forage and snapping them up again at any threat. Reproduction in the wild is seasonal (IUCN), and parental care is biparental and extended, with the brood escorted as a school for weeks after free-swimming. The specifics above are drawn from the genus and from documented congeners rather than from Bujurquina huallagae itself, which has no published spawning account; the clutch figure and care details in the fact box are flagged as genus-typical.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina huallagae is effectively absent from the aquarium trade. It has not been exported commercially in any meaningful quantity, and the handful of records that exist are almost certainly mislabelled congeners or undetermined Bujurquina from the same drainage. A keeper who does obtain confirmed fish should regard them as a research-grade rarity and house them accordingly, with every effort made to document behaviour and, ideally, to pass surplus offspring to other serious cichlid keepers. The husbandry notes below are drawn partly from the published ecology of the species itself and partly from well-documented congeners — Bujurquina vittata, Bujurquina syspilus and Bujurquina labiosa in particular — where the genus pattern is reliable.
A pair can be kept in a tank of about 25 US gal (roughly 35.5 in long), but more space eases the tension that arises when a bonded pair drives other fish away from their spawning site. A soft, fine sand substrate is appropriate: the species occupies rubble-and-sand stream beds in the wild, and sand allows the fish to sift and rearrange the bottom in the normal acara fashion. Dry leaf litter — oak or Indian almond leaves — is both natural and functional: it acidifies the water gently, hosts small invertebrates the fish will hunt, and, crucially, provides the spawning substrate. Bujurquina are leaf-spawners, and a pair will select and defend a single favoured leaf or flat twig weeks before any spawning attempt. Add several pieces so the fish can make a choice rather than competing with other tank inhabitants for the only one available. Complete the scape with driftwood root sections for cover and broken sight-lines, and dim the lighting; the piedmont streams this fish comes from are shaded by riparian forest and the fish are not accustomed to open, brightly lit conditions.
Water chemistry should mirror the soft, near-neutral conditions of the upper Huallaga piedmont: pH in the range of 6.0–7.0 is a good working target, general hardness kept low (under around 8 °dGH), and temperature held between 22 and 79 °F. Unlike lowland Amazonian cichlids, Bujurquina huallagae comes from streams that can cool noticeably at night and in the dry season, and the cooler end of that range may actually encourage spawning. Strong filtration with a moderate current, and weekly partial water changes, are essential: the clear, well-oxygenated streams this species inhabits offer nothing like the buffering capacity of turbid lowland rivers, and water-quality lapses that a more robust cichlid would shrug off can cause rapid deterioration here. Do not let pH drift above 7.5 or temperature exceed 79 °F.
Suitable tankmates are small, peaceful fish that can hold their own without provoking the pair during breeding: small tetras (Hyphessobrycon spp., Moenkhausia spp.) or pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.) from a similar western-Amazon lowland or foothill setting work well as dither fish, taking the edge off the pair's anxiety in open water. Avoid large or boisterous cichlids entirely, and be cautious with other substrate-spawning cichlids that might compete for leaf sites. Corydoras from Peruvian drainages are natural co-inhabitants and can serve as bottom-cleaning companions, though a breeding pair will chase them away from the spawning leaf. This is not a fish for a general community tank that includes hard-water species or large New World cichlids.
The chief challenge in keeping this species, beyond its rarity, is managing the pair dynamic. The delayed mouthbrooding reproductive strategy means the pair will guard a leaf for some time before eggs appear, then tend the clutch on that surface while periodically shuttling it around the tank; once the larvae hatch, both parents will take them into their mouths at the slightest disturbance. A common keeper mistake is to interpret this mouthholding as stress or disease and to intervene — the fish should be left alone unless the tank is genuinely threatened. Separating the pair after spawning is counterproductive: Bujurquina are biparental and the removal of either parent typically leads to brood loss. A quieter approach is to reduce water changes to small daily top-offs once eggs have been laid, darken the tank with floating plants or a cover cloth, and minimise vibration near the tank. Fry that reach free-swimming stage can be fed newly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworms from the outset. Given the species' rarity and the near-total absence of captive-breeding accounts, keepers who manage a successful spawn are strongly encouraged to share detailed notes with the cichlid community — there is effectively no published record to build on.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina huallagae as Least Concern (assessed 9 October 2014, published 2016; Chocano, Hidalgo del Aguila, Sanchez-Duarte & Arguello), on the strength of a comparatively wide range, an apparently stable and locally common population, and its occurrence inside two protected areas, Parque Nacional Cordillera Azul and Parque Nacional Tingo María in Peru. It carries no CITES listing and is only used locally, as an occasional protein source for riverside communities rather than as a commercial food or aquarium export. The assessment is candid that the species is not threat-free: at least two subpopulations are exposed to reduced water quality from oil-extraction activity (spills, and the discharge of hot, saline purge water into the rivers), while populations near Tarapoto, Yurimaguas and Tingo María face degradation from untreated urban wastewater. That tension, a Least-Concern fish in basins under localized but real pressure, is the honest framing here: the upper Huallaga and the wider western-Amazon piedmont are among the parts of the Amazon where extractive industry, deforestation and expanding towns press hardest on small, clear-water streams, the exact habitat this little acara depends on. The assessment itself is now flagged by the Red List as needing updating, so the status should be read as a 2014 snapshot rather than a current verdict.
