Astatotilapia swynnertoni is a generalized riverine haplochromine cichlid of south-eastern Africa, described by George Albert Boulenger in 1907 from material collected by the naturalist C. F. M. Swynnerton. It belongs to the same broad, adaptable genus as the well-studied Astatotilapia burtoni, and like its relatives is an opportunistic maternal mouthbrooder of rivers and floodplain pools rather than a great-lake specialist. Field data on the species are sparse, but its inclusion in the CARES Preservation Program as a Vulnerable species reflects the precarious, poorly monitored status of many southern African riverine cichlids outside the famous rift-lake radiations.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1907, in one of his many papers on fish collections sent to the British Museum from colonial Southern Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe). The material had been gathered by Charles Francis Massy Swynnerton (1877–1938), a British-born naturalist, entomologist and forester who spent much of his career in Rhodesia and later Tanganyika, and who supplied specimens of birds, insects and fish to specialists in London; a number of African species across several groups carry his name in recognition of that collecting work. Boulenger's original combination is understood to have placed the fish in the genus then used for African cichlids of this general form; it was subsequently transferred to Astatotilapia, the broad genus of generalized, small-to-medium mouthbrooding haplochromines that P. H. Greenwood consolidated in his 1979 revision of the Haplochromis group to absorb the many similar riverine cichlids scattered across Africa outside the great lakes. Astatotilapia in this sense also contains the widely studied model species A. burtoni, and swynnertoni is best understood as one of the genus's many regional, generalist representatives rather than as part of a lake-flock radiation.
