Taxonomy & naming
Astatotilapia sp. "Calliptera Chizumulu" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It is recognised informally, through malawi.si and the broader field literature on the Astatotilapia calliptera complex, as a population from Chizumulu Island - one of the two inhabited islands in the northern part of Lake Malawi, along with nearby Likoma. Astatotilapia calliptera itself, described by Albert Gunther in 1894, is one of only a handful of non-endemic haplochromines native to the Lake Malawi basin, and genomic work (Malinsky, Durbin and colleagues, 2018) shows it sitting near the base of, or closely allied to, the explosive Malawi cichlid radiation, with substantial genetic structure among its many lake, river and island populations. That structure is exactly why some populations, including this one, circulate under a "sp." trade name rather than simply being folded into Astatotilapia calliptera as a locality colour form: field workers and aquarists treat the Chizumulu Island fish as sufficiently distinct, by locality and reported appearance, to flag separately, without a formal description settling the question either way. Until a taxonomic revision of the calliptera complex is published, no authority or date should be attached to this population, and its exact relationship to the nominal species remains an open question rather than a settled one.
Morphology
This population follows the general Astatotilapia calliptera build: a moderately elongate, only moderately compressed haplochromine body, less specialised in shape than the rock- and sand-adapted endemics of the main radiation, reaching a genus/complex-typical maximum of roughly 6 in. Beyond that, specific morphological or colour documentation for the Chizumulu Island population is not available in the sources compiled here. The malawi.si record and hobby references distinguish it from other calliptera populations chiefly by collection locality and, reportedly, by differences in male breeding colour consistent with the wider pattern of local divergence documented across the calliptera complex - but the specific pattern for Chizumulu Island fish is not detailed enough in the sources used here to describe with confidence, so this account does not invent one. What can be stated is the general Astatotilapia calliptera sexual dimorphism: dominant males flush with colour and develop ocellated egg-spot markings on the anal fin, while females and subordinate males stay a subdued, generalist green-grey.
Habitat
Astatotilapia sp. "Calliptera Chizumulu" is recorded from Chizumulu Island, in the northern part of Lake Malawi near the Mozambique side of the lake and close to the larger island of Likoma. Astatotilapia calliptera as a species has the broadest range of almost any fish associated with the lake, extending well beyond it into the Shire River, satellite lakes, and east-coast river systems of the Mozambique coastal plain; within the lake itself it is a shallow-water, nearshore fish, favouring vegetated and weedy margins and quiet water rather than the open rocky reefs or sand flats of the endemic mbuna and haps. Around an island such as Chizumulu, that means the sheltered, weedy or lagoon-like margins rather than the wave-exposed rocky drop-offs the island is otherwise known for among divers. It shares the warm, hard, alkaline water typical of Lake Malawi's surface layer, broadly in the range of 24-28 degC and pH 7.5-8.5, in shallow water generally less than about 33 ft deep.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to the Chizumulu Island population have been published. Astatotilapia calliptera as a whole is a dietary generalist - the ecological opposite of the narrow trophic specialists that fill out most of the Malawi radiation - taking aquatic invertebrates, algae, plant material, small fishes and plankton, and sitting at a middling trophic level around 3.0. It has been observed foraging from plants, within the sand, and on rock surfaces, a spread of foraging modes usually split among separate specialist species elsewhere in the lake. This population is presumed to feed the same way, as the trade name marks locality and reported appearance rather than any documented ecological difference from the wider complex.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been separately documented for the Chizumulu Island population. Like the great majority of Malawi haplochromines, and Astatotilapia calliptera specifically, it is presumed to have no pair bond and a polygynous, lek-like mating system: a male in breeding condition colours up and defends a small spawning site against rivals, courting passing females with displays of an ocellated anal fin, while females otherwise move and associate freely. Aquarists who keep locality forms of the calliptera complex generally keep populations separate specifically to avoid the courtship-driven interbreeding that would erase the documented provenance a form like this depends on.
Breeding
Astatotilapia sp. "Calliptera Chizumulu" is presumed to be an ovophilic maternal mouthbrooder, the default reproductive mode of Astatotilapia calliptera and the Malawi haplochromines generally. In the nominal species, the female incubates fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly 12 to 14 days at 26 degC, fasting through the brood, then continues to guard the free-swimming fry for several more days, retrieving them into her mouth at any sign of threat; clutch sizes are modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs. No breeding data specific to the Chizumulu Island population have been published, and life-history traits are documented to vary meaningfully across calliptera-complex populations, so these figures should be read as a complex-typical baseline rather than a measurement of this fish.
In the aquarium
Astatotilapia sp. "Calliptera Chizumulu" is kept, where it appears in the hobby at all, as a provenance-labelled locality form of the calliptera complex, following the general Astatotilapia calliptera template: a hardy, adaptable cichlid well suited to a 120-litre aquarium for a single male with two or three females, filtered generously, and kept in warm, hard, alkaline water in the range of 24-28 degC and pH 7.5-8.5. A sand or fine-gravel substrate suits the fish's natural sifting behaviour, and modest rockwork or robust plants such as Vallisneria or Anubias give subordinate fish somewhere to retreat without needing the elaborate cave structure a rock-dwelling mbuna would demand. A varied diet of quality flake or micro-pellet supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates, fed in modest quantities with regular partial water changes, keeps the fish in good condition.
The one rule specific to keeping a locality form like this is provenance discipline: keep it as a single-collection-point group and do not mix it with Astatotilapia calliptera, or other calliptera-complex "sp." forms, from other localities, since interbreeding destroys exactly the documented identity that gives a form like this its value to serious keepers. Tankmate selection should favour other medium-sized, similarly assertive open-water or sand-zone Malawi cichlids; small mbuna in a tight tank can escalate aggression unhelpfully, and any species prone to interbreed with calliptera-complex fish should be avoided for the same reason.
Conservation
Astatotilapia sp. "Calliptera Chizumulu" has not been separately evaluated by the IUCN. The nominal species, Astatotilapia calliptera, is assessed Least Concern (2018) on the strength of a wide distribution across lakes and rivers in several southeastern African countries, but that broad, secure status does not automatically extend to a single island population, and no dedicated assessment of the Chizumulu Island form exists. The practical conservation concern for a locality population confined to one island's shoreline is local: over-collection or habitat disturbance can deplete it in place even while the wider species complex remains abundant. Lake Malawi's basin as a whole faces documented pressure from overfishing, sedimentation, nutrient loading and shallow-water warming, and the shallow, weedy, nearshore habitat this fish favours is exactly the zone those pressures fall on hardest. No formal conservation status beyond "not assessed" should be attached to this population.
