Taxonomy & naming
The peppered cory was described by Leonard Jenyns in 1842, as Callichthys paleatus, in the fish volume of The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle — the specimens having been collected by Charles Darwin at the Laguna del Potrero near Maldonado, Uruguay, which remains the type locality. It was later transferred into Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the great genus of South American armoured catfishes (family Callichthyidae), and for well over a century it was known universally as Hoplisoma paleatum. That is the name under which it is bred, traded and written about, and the name we keep at the head of this page.
The genus Corydoras had, however, grown to well over 170 species and was shown by molecular work not to be a single natural group. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) that split it among several genera — Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster and others — and under that scheme the peppered cory becomes Hoplisoma paleatum. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists its current valid combination as Hoplisoma paleatum (Jenyns 1842), and FishBase has followed suit. It is worth being honest that the peppered cory is not the type species of Corydoras (that is Corydoras geoffroy), so it did not 'anchor' the old genus and was free to move. The change is recent and the aquarium trade still says 'Hoplisoma paleatum' almost without exception. A nomenclatural footnote: Callichthys punctatus Valenciennes 1834 is technically the senior name, but paleatus is conserved as a nomen protectum, so the familiar epithet stands.
This fish was long listed as Corydoras paleatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Hoplisoma, and the current combination Hoplisoma paleatum is followed here.
Morphology
This is a small, robust, deep-bodied catfish reaching roughly 2.6–2.8 in standard length, with females growing visibly larger and rounder than males; published lengths run to about 2.6 in SL for males and 2.8 in for females. Like all corys it is armoured rather than scaled — two rows of overlapping bony plates (scutes) run the length of each flank and meet along the back, and the head is a hard, blunt helmet. Three pairs of short sensory barbels fringe the downturned mouth, the tools it uses to taste and sift the substrate. The dorsal fin carries two spines and eight or nine soft rays, and stiff spines also arm the leading edge of the pectoral and adipose fins.
The ground colour is a pale olive-to-grey overlaid with a dense scatter of dark blotches and speckles — the 'peppering' that gives the fish its name — typically organised around three larger blackish patches along the midline of the flank. The anterior part of the dorsal fin is black, and the caudal-fin lobes are crossed by dark bars, both useful in telling it from close relatives. Wild fish are markedly more contrasted and vivid than the long-line farmed stock that fills the trade, and decades of captive breeding have also fixed an albino form (pink body, red eyes) and longer-finned strains.
Habitat
Hoplisoma paleatum is a fish of the cooler, subtropical south of the continent. Its range covers the lower Paraná River basin and the coastal rivers of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, reaching down into the Río de la Plata system, with records also from Bolivia at the margins of its range. It lives in rivers and their tributaries but is just as at home in standing water — ponds, pools, ditches and small lakes — typically over soft sand or mud with leaf litter and submerged wood.
What sets it apart from most tropical corys is temperature. FishBase characterises its waters as subtropical, around 64–73 °F, and in nature it experiences a genuine seasonal swing, tolerating spells distinctly cooler than a heated tropical aquarium. Reported water chemistry is moderate and forgiving — a pH band of about 6.0 to 8.0 and soft to moderately hard water (roughly 5–19 dH) — which is a large part of why the species adapts so readily to captivity. Like its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a modified, vascularised hindgut, an adaptation that lets it persist in warm, still, low-oxygen pools.
Feeding
The peppered cory is a benthic omnivore. Gut analyses of wild specimens show an opportunistic diet of worms, crustaceans, aquatic insects and other small invertebrates of the bottom (zoobenthos), together with plant matter and organic detritus. It works the substrate continuously, burying its snout and barbels in sand to taste out food and expelling cleaned grains through the gills. That catholic, undemanding diet is part of its hardiness. In the aquarium it accepts virtually anything that reaches the bottom — sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia — but it should be fed a proper, varied diet of its own rather than left to scavenge whatever its tankmates drop.
Mating
Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and a distinctive, well-documented courtship, and the peppered cory follows the pattern exactly. When a female ripens, the group becomes active and the males begin to pursue her; a male then takes up the classic 'T-position', lying at right angles across the front of the female with her barbels held against his body. He releases milt, which is thought to pass rapidly across her gills and gut, while she clasps two to four eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. The eggs are fertilised over roughly half a minute before she swims off to press the very sticky eggs onto a cleaned surface — often the aquarium glass or a plant leaf. The sequence repeats many times until something like a hundred or more eggs have been laid.
Breeding
This is one of the classic 'first' egg-layers for the hobbyist, because it breeds so readily and so predictably. A productive breeding group is best skewed to more males than females — at least two males per female is the usual recommendation. Condition the fish well on live and frozen foods, and when the females are visibly full of eggs, trigger spawning with a large water change using water several degrees cooler than the tank — mimicking the cool rains of the southern spring. The drop of around 41 °F may need repeating over a few days. In spawning mode the fish swim restlessly up and down the front glass before pairing off.
The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches and can total a couple of hundred when several pairs spawn together. Corys are less inclined than many fish to eat their own eggs, but the safe course is still to remove the adults once spawning finishes. Eggs hatch in around three days; the fry, once they have absorbed their yolk sacs, take microworm and then powdered foods and brine shrimp nauplii. Clean water and regular changes are the key to raising them. This easy, reliable reproduction is why the species is farmed commercially in huge numbers and why almost every peppered cory in a shop is captive-bred.
In the aquarium
The peppered cory is a deservedly popular beginner's fish, and one of the hardiest corys available, but a few real requirements separate a thriving group from a merely surviving one. First, it is a shoaling species: keep six or more, and they reward you with constant, confident activity; kept alone or in pairs they are stressed and withdrawn. A group is comfortable in a tank of around 23.6 in / 20 US gal or more, where floor area matters far more than height.
Second, substrate is not decoration. Provide soft sand or smooth, rounded fine gravel, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or dirty gravel erodes and infects their barbels — one of the commonest signs of poor cory husbandry. Keep the bottom clean. On temperature, this is the important difference from most of its tropical cousins: it prefers cooler water, roughly 64–75 °F, and does not want to be kept hot — sustained tropical-warm temperatures shorten its life. It is utterly peaceful and an ideal companion for tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm community fish, and being one of the larger common corys it can even be kept over slightly coarser substrate than the small species. Two standard cautions apply: the stiff pectoral spines tangle easily in nets (a cup is safer), and a distressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, may kill the whole group — so transport them with care.
Conservation
Hoplisoma paleatum is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (assessment dated 2020). It is widespread across the subtropical south of the continent, ecologically flexible, tolerant of standing and disturbed waters, and — crucially — the overwhelming majority of fish in trade are commercially captive-bred rather than wild-caught, so collection pressure on wild stocks is negligible. None of that exempts it from the broad pressures on South American freshwaters — agriculture, pollution, damming and habitat loss all degrade the shallow waters it favours — but as a species it is in no danger. The more interesting footnote is taxonomic: now that it has been moved to Hoplisoma, future assessments will sit under that combination, and continuing study of its close relatives in the Paraná system may yet refine where its boundaries lie.
