Crenicichla aravera is a slender, fish-eating pike cichlid known from a single small river in the rainforest of Misiones, north-eastern Argentina. Described only in 2023, it is one of two sympatric species the same authors named together from the arroyo Piray Guazú — a streamlined piscivore (aravera) living alongside its stockier, more generalist sister (Crenicichla ama). The pair are a textbook case of parallel evolution: within the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species flock of the Paraná, the same elongate-predator-versus-deep-bodied-generalist split has arisen again and again, mirroring an identical dichotomy in the unrelated Crenicichla missioneira flock of the neighbouring Uruguay River. The name aravera is Guaraní for 'flash' — for the long pointed body, the bold black stripe down the flank, and the quick darting strike of a hunter.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla aravera was described in 2023 by Oldřich Říčan, Lubomír Piálek, Adriana Almirón and Jorge Casciotta in the European Journal of Taxonomy (vol. 879, pp. 38–63), in the same paper that named its sympatric sister species Crenicichla ama. The holotype — an adult male 4 in in standard length, catalogued as MLP 11450 in the Museo de La Plata — was collected in the upper arroyo Piray Guazú along provincial route RP20 (26°26′34″ S, 54°08′29″ W) in Misiones Province, Argentina, in November 2007; six paratypes accompany it. The fish had been known to the authors for over a decade before it was formally described, appearing in their earlier molecular work simply as 'Crenicichla sp. Piray Guazú line' (Piálek et al. 2012, 2019; Říčan et al. 2021). Within the genus, Crenicichla aravera belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, itself one of four clades of the larger Crenicichla lacustris species group, which together with the Crenicichla missioneira complex makes up a 'southern Crenicichla clade' restricted to subtropical South America outside the Amazon. The mandelburgeri complex currently holds eleven described species, all endemic to the Middle Paraná basin and its great tributary the Iguazú; the widespread Crenicichla vittata Heckel, 1840 is the complex's sister. A genetic curiosity sits at the heart of this species: mitochondrial DNA places Crenicichla aravera and Crenicichla ama in different clades, yet nuclear (ddRAD) data recover them as sister species — a mitonuclear discordance the authors attribute to the reticulate (partly hybrid) origin of Crenicichla aravera, which carries secondary genetic introgression from Crenicichla mandelburgeri. No common name is established for the fish in the hobby or trade.

Morphology

Crenicichla aravera is a small pike cichlid: the type series ranges from about 3–5.5 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of 5.5 in SL. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, oval-in-cross-section shape typical of the genus, but pushed toward the extreme — this is one of the more streamlined members of its complex. The fin counts run to 20–23 dorsal spines with 11–12 soft rays and three anal spines with 8–9 soft rays; there are roughly 50–55 scales in the E1 row (the row just above the lower lateral line), a count that cleanly separates it from the heavily scaled Crenicichla vittata (78–85). In life the ground colour is grey to yellowish-grey, darker over the back and almost white on the belly. The single most distinctive feature is a deep-grey-to-black continuous midlateral band running the whole length of the body — the dominant marking and the chief diagnostic character. This unbroken stripe is rare within the complex, shared only with Crenicichla yjhui and, less consistently, with Crenicichla vittata and Crenicichla mandelburgeri; the great majority of the complex instead wears a row of separate midlateral blotches. Faint grey hints of vertical bars show only on the dorsum above the band, and a short, narrow black suborbital stripe marks the cheek. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins are pale grey; males carry numerous fairly large dark spots scattered across these fins, which females mostly lack. The caudal fin bears a black subcircular spot just above its midline. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle outside breeding: males are the spotted-finned sex, while breeding females develop a striking large black white-ringed blotch in the dorsal fin and warm yellow-to-orange tones below the midlateral band, intensifying in reproductive condition into an orange flank band (a band weaker in aravera than in its sister Crenicichla ama). Compared with the look-alike Crenicichla yjhui, aravera is the more committed predator, with statistically longer jaws, a longer snout and head, a longer caudal peduncle and a larger eye.

Habitat

Crenicichla aravera is a narrow-range endemic with one of the smallest distributions of any pike cichlid: it is known only from the basin of the arroyo Piray Guazú, a tributary on the Argentine (Misiones) side of the Paraná River. The authors describe the Piray Guazú as a tributary of the Middle Paraná, though in the freshwater-ecoregion scheme this stretch of north-eastern Misiones falls within the Upper Paraná ecoregion. The fish occurs only above the rapids that separate the Piray Guazú from the Paraná mainstem, a barrier that has isolated and helped diversify the whole mandelburgeri flock. It is sympatric — and partly syntopic — with its sister species Crenicichla ama, the two sharing the same river; but where Crenicichla ama also ranges up into the smaller tributaries, Crenicichla aravera has so far been collected only from the main river channel of the Piray Guazú, consistent with a more open-water, current-loving predator. These are warm, clear subtropical rainforest streams of the Atlantic Forest of Misiones. The original description does not report in-situ measurements of temperature, pH or conductivity at the type locality; FishBase classes the species simply as freshwater, benthopelagic and subtropical. Like most fishes of these moderately soft, near-neutral Paraná-basin waters it can be expected in roughly 72–82 °F at a pH near 6.5–7.5, but for this species those figures are inferred from the regional setting rather than directly published. No depth range has been published; as an inhabitant of a small to medium river channel it lives in the shallow band of a few metres or less.

Feeding

Crenicichla aravera is a specialized piscivore — a fish-eater — and its whole anatomy advertises the fact. The authors diagnose it by a suite of 'piscivory-associated' characters: long oral jaws (lower jaw averaging about 17% of standard length), a shallow, streamlined head, a slender body, and delicate lower pharyngeal jaws bearing fine teeth rather than the robust crushing mill seen in molluscivorous relatives. This is the lean, fast end of the ecomorphological spectrum that the mandelburgeri flock has repeatedly evolved. The complex as a whole spans a remarkable range of feeding types — generalized predators, snail-crushing molluscivores, large-lipped crevice-pickers, even a periphyton-grazing near-herbivore — and aravera occupies the most predatory niche, shared with Crenicichla yjhui, Crenicichla iguassuensis, Crenicichla mandelburgeri and Crenicichla vittata. Crucially, it sits opposite its own sister: where Crenicichla aravera is the long-jawed pelagic-leaning piscivore, the sympatric Crenicichla ama is the deeper-bodied, shorter-jawed generalist predator, the two dividing the river between them. FishBase estimates a trophic level around 3.2. No detailed gut-content study has been published, but the morphology leaves little doubt that small fishes — and likely aquatic invertebrates — are the prey, taken by the quick ambush-and-dart strike that gives the fish its Guaraní name.

Mating

Nothing has been published specifically on courtship or pair formation in Crenicichla aravera, and the species has essentially no aquarium history from which to draw. What can be said comes from the genus and from the clues left in the species' own coloration. Pike cichlids of the lacustris group are biparental and form pair bonds around a defended territory, and the sexually distinct breeding dress of female aravera — the large white-ringed black blotch that appears in the dorsal fin and the orange flush that spreads along the lower flank in reproductive condition — is exactly the kind of signal these fish use to advertise readiness and identity to a mate. That this breeding-female dorsal blotch is shared with its sister Crenicichla ama, while differing from the long banded dorsal of the look-alike Crenicichla yjhui, suggests it functions in part as a species-recognition signal in a river where closely related pike cichlids live side by side. Beyond this, the social behaviour of aravera in the wild is undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla aravera, either in the wild or in captivity; the species is known essentially only from preserved type material and tissue samples. Its reproductive biology can therefore only be inferred from its close relatives. Pike cichlids of the Crenicichla lacustris group, to which this species belongs, are biparental substrate and cave spawners: a pair cleans a sheltered surface — a crevice, the underside of a stone, or a cavity among roots — and lays an adhesive clutch that both parents then guard and tend, the female typically staying close to the eggs and fanning them while the male patrols the territory. Reported clutches for small to medium congeners run on the order of a few hundred eggs; in the absence of any direct count for aravera, a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 eggs is the best available estimate. The conspicuous breeding coloration of females (the white-ringed dorsal blotch and orange flank) indicates the usual cichlid pattern of intense, signalled parental care. Spawning triggers, egg and larval development, and the duration of care all remain unstudied in this species.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla aravera is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It was described in 2023 from a single small river in Misiones, it has no established presence in the hobby or the ornamental trade, and as far as published records go it has never been kept or bred in captivity. Anyone encountering the name should treat 'Piray Guazú pike cichlid' material with caution, because several superficially similar, undescribed and described pike cichlids share its range and the mandelburgeri complex is notoriously hard to identify on sight — even the specialists separate aravera from its neighbours mainly on jaw proportions, scale counts and the continuous-band-versus-blotches coloration. If the species ever did reach aquarists, the sensible approach would follow husbandry that suits its small, current-loving, fish-eating congeners from the subtropical Paraná: a long tank with a sand or fine-gravel floor, plenty of rock and root structure to provide a defensible cave and broken sight-lines, gentle to moderate flow, well-oxygenated soft to neutral water around 72–79 °F, and a diet built on meaty foods. Being a slender piscivore only about 5–5.5 in long, it would regard small tankmates as prey while itself being vulnerable to larger, more aggressive cichlids; a single pair or a carefully matched group in a spacious tank would be the only realistic arrangement. For now, though, this is a fish of the river and the museum drawer, not the home aquarium.

Conservation

Crenicichla aravera has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status Not Evaluated as of Red List version 2025-2, per FishBase), nor is it listed under CITES — unsurprising for a species formally named only in 2023. No formal assessment of its population exists. What is clear is that it is a single-river endemic: its entire known world range is the basin of the arroyo Piray Guazú above the rapids, in the Atlantic Forest of Misiones, Argentina. Such an extremely restricted distribution is intrinsically a conservation concern, because any localized pressure — deforestation of the surrounding rainforest, agricultural runoff, damming, or alteration of the small river's flow and water quality — could affect the whole species at once. The Paraná basin more broadly faces well-documented pressures from dams, land-use change and fragmentation, and the upper-Misiones rivers sit within a heavily cleared portion of the Atlantic Forest. None of these is documented as a present threat to Crenicichla aravera specifically, but they are the backdrop against which a newly described, narrow-range endemic should be watched, and they argue for a formal assessment in due course.
