Crenicichla haroldoi is a small, slender pike cichlid endemic to the upper Paraná River basin of interior Brazil. Like the rest of its large genus it is a torpedo-shaped, ambush-hunting predator of the riverbed, lying among submerged wood and stones before lunging at insects and small fishes. It belongs to the southern lacustris species group, was named in 1974 for the Brazilian ichthyologist Haroldo Travassos, and is one of several closely similar pikes that share the dammed, reservoir-strung waters of the upper Paraná. Uncommon in the wild and almost unknown in the aquarium trade, it is a fish far better documented by museum collectors than by hobbyists.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla haroldoi was described in 1974 by José A. Luengo and Heraldo A. Britski in the journal Acta Biologica Venezuelica, on material from Jupiá on the Rio Paraná, in what was then Mato Grosso, Brazil. That type locality — the stretch of the upper Paraná later impounded behind the Jupiá dam — also yielded its near-twin Crenicichla jupiaensis, which Britski and Luengo had described together six years earlier (1968). The holotype is held at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 40226), with paratypes distributed between São Paulo and the Museo de Biología of the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, reflecting Luengo's Venezuelan base. The name has stood as valid ever since and is universally accepted in modern treatments, including Kullander's 2003 checklist of South American freshwater fishes and Varella's 2011 revision of the Paraná-Paraguay Crenicichla. Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids, and Crenicichla haroldoi sits within its southern lacustris species group — a cluster of moderately small, elongate pikes (including Crenicichla iguassuensis, Crenicichla jaguarensis, Crenicichla jupiaensis, Crenicichla scottii and Crenicichla niederleinii) characterized by a high dorsal-spine count, a suborbital stripe often broken into dark dots, spotted flanks and unpaired fins, and a dark blotch at the base of the tail. The boundaries between these forms have long been muddled; Casciotta (1987), comparing his new Crenicichla celidochilus against Crenicichla haroldoi and its relatives, and Kullander in his studies of the group both stressed how poorly the older nominal species were defined, and Varella's revision was needed to stabilize them.

Morphology

This is a small pike cichlid with the classic Crenicichla silhouette: a long, low, cylindrical body, a flattened head, a large terminal mouth set with several rows of teeth, and the dorsal and anal fins carried far back toward a rounded tail. The body is genuinely elongate — its greatest depth fits roughly four to five times into the standard length, and the head about three times. Reported maximum size depends heavily on the source. FishBase lists only 4 in standard length, but that figure plainly undercounts the species: the revisionary literature (Graça & Pavanelli 2007, carried into Ota et al.'s 2018 monograph on the upper Paraná floodplain fishes) records a maximum of 6.5 in (about 6.5 in) standard length, and museum series include adults well over 4 in. A figure of around 6–6.5 in SL is the realistic upper size. The fin counts are diagnostic of the group — the dorsal carries roughly twenty to thirty-two spines and nine to eleven soft rays, the anal three spines and seven to nine rays — and there are about 52 to 61 scales in the longitudinal series. In life the ground color is greenish; a black stripe runs down through the eye (the suborbital bar), a dark-brown longitudinal band extends from the gill cover back to the caudal peduncle, dark-brown vertical bars cross the flanks, and small black spots mark the lateral-line scales. The soft parts of the dorsal and anal fins are speckled with dark-brown spots, and there is a black rounded blotch at the base of the caudal fin. As in most pike cichlids the sexes are unevenly documented, but females of the lacustris group typically carry a contrasting ocellated marking and reddish flush in the dorsal fin when ripe, while males grow larger; precise published dimorphism for this species is thin.

Habitat

Crenicichla haroldoi is endemic to the upper Paraná River basin and is known only from Brazil. It occurs both in the tributaries and in the main channels of the rios Paraná, Paranapanema and Paranaíba, spanning the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Much of this range is now a chain of large hydroelectric reservoirs, and the species is recorded from the reservoir-influenced reaches as well as from the surviving free-flowing stretches and the floodplain of the upper Paraná. It is reported from lentic (still), semi-lentic and lotic (flowing) waters alike, and IUCN classifies its habitat simply as inland wetlands and permanent rivers, streams and creeks. As a benthopelagic pike it lives close to structure on the bottom — submerged branches, leaf litter, root tangles and rocky margins that provide ambush cover. No detailed in-situ chemistry has been published for this particular species, but the upper Paraná in this region carries warm, moderately soft to medium-hard, near-neutral water typical of the Brazilian Cerrado and Atlantic-Forest interior, with temperatures broadly in the low-to-high twenties Celsius through the year. Depth has not been measured for the species specifically; like its riverine congeners it is a shallow-water fish of the littoral and bank zone rather than the deep channel.

Feeding

Pike cichlids are the Neotropics' answer to the pike and the perch — elongate, large-mouthed ambush predators that hold among cover and strike at passing prey. Crenicichla haroldoi has not had its own stomach contents formally published, but its feeding habit can be read from its anatomy and from its close relatives. The IUCN assessment, following the genus-level work of Gubiani and colleagues on the Paraná reservoirs (2012), classes it as essentially insectivorous, and FishBase places it at a trophic level around 3.2 — a carnivore that takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, with small fishes added as the animal grows. Diet studies of its upper-Paraná congeners bear this out: Crenicichla britskii in the basin's streams feeds chiefly on aquatic insects and decapod shrimps, and the larger pikes shift increasingly toward fish with size. In its community Crenicichla haroldoi is a mid-level benthic predator of the riverbank and floodplain, hunting by sit-and-wait among submerged wood and stone rather than by active pursuit.

Mating

No courtship or pair-formation behavior has been described in the wild or in captivity for Crenicichla haroldoi specifically — it is too obscure a fish to have attracted that attention. What can be said comes from the consistent biology of the genus and of the southern lacustris group to which it belongs. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs that hold a joint territory around a spawning site, and pairing is preceded by mutual display and a gradual reduction of the strong intraspecific aggression that otherwise keeps these solitary ambush hunters apart. In the one documented field observation of a lacustris-group pike's reproductive behavior, Luengo watched a pike (reported as Crenicichla dorsocellata) in a Uruguayan stream guarding free-swimming young, with a parent apparently taking the brood into its mouth when danger threatened — a hint of the protective intensity these fishes bring to breeding, though the details were never fully recorded. For Crenicichla haroldoi the realistic statement is that it is a territorial, pair-forming substrate spawner whose pre-spawning behavior follows the genus pattern but has not been observed and published.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla haroldoi in the wild or in the aquarium. On the strength of its genus, it is expected to be a biparental cave or crevice spawner: pike cichlids of this size deposit their eggs on a sheltered hard surface — the roof or wall of a cave, a hollow under wood or rock — which the female tends and fans while the male defends the surrounding territory, after which both parents guard the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry. Clutch sizes for small-to-medium Crenicichla of the lacustris group are not large; congeners of comparable size typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs (roughly 100–400, the figure given here as a genus-typical estimate rather than a measurement for this species). The young pass through a guarded fry stage during which they retreat to cover when alarmed. Specific egg numbers, incubation times and developmental milestones for Crenicichla haroldoi remain unpublished, and any aquarium spawning would be a genuine first record worth documenting.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla haroldoi is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is an uncommon fish even in its native range, has no ornamental trade to speak of, and is not bred or distributed commercially, so almost everything a keeper would need to know has to be inferred from better-known small pike cichlids of the southern, lacustris-group lineage rather than from direct experience with this species.

If it were kept, it would be managed as a small, predatory, territorial pike. A footprint of at least 47 in length (about 65–80 US gal) would suit a pair, with the emphasis on floor area and structure rather than height — these are bottom-oriented ambush fish, not open-water swimmers. The decor that matters is cover: driftwood, root tangles, rockwork and at least one or two enclosed caves or pipe sections per fish, arranged to break the line of sight so that a subordinate fish or an unready mate can stay out of view. A sand or fine-gravel substrate suits its riverbed habits. As a fish of warm, moderately soft, near-neutral upper-Paraná water, it should do well at roughly 72–82 °F and a pH around 6.0–7.5; clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow and a robust filter is appropriate, since pike cichlids are sensitive to fouled water but come from flowing rivers rather than still ponds.

Feeding is straightforward in principle — a carnivore that will take frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, mysis, krill, earthworm) and, for larger individuals, small fish or carnivore pellets once weaned onto prepared food. Live feeder fish are unnecessary and carry disease risk. The behavioral cautions are the standard pike-cichlid ones: this is a predator that will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, and it is intolerant of its own kind outside of a bonded pair, so single specimens or carefully introduced, well-fed pairs in a large, structure-rich tank are the sensible options. Tankmates, if any, should be robust, mid-to-upper-water fishes too large to be eaten and not so boisterous as to harass a shy ambush predator. None of this is established practice for Crenicichla haroldoi in particular — it is the honest extrapolation from its relatives, and a keeper acquiring this species would be working largely without a roadmap.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla haroldoi as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio, reviewed by P. Reis), part of Brazil's national Red Book evaluation of its threatened fauna. The assessment notes that the species is naturally uncommon and not abundant in the upper Paraná basin, but that no threats severe enough to endanger its population have been identified, and it therefore qualifies as Least Concern. It carries no CITES listing. The pressures the assessors did record are the familiar ones for the dammed upper Paraná: removal of marginal bankside vegetation and the introduction of non-native fishes, particularly in the reservoirs where the species occurs — neither judged significant at the population level. The fish does occur within protected areas, including the Environmental Protection Area of the Islands and Floodplains of the Paraná River and, probably, Ilha Grande National Park and the Várzeas do Rio Ivinhema State Park. The assessors flagged how little is known about its distribution limits, population trends and basic biology, and called for study on all three — a fair summary of the state of knowledge for this little-documented endemic. Against the broader backdrop, the upper Paraná is one of the most heavily impounded and biologically altered river systems in South America, and the spread of introduced species through its reservoir chain is the change most likely to bear on a quiet native predator like this one over the long term.
