Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla jaguarensis was described by the American naturalist John Diederich Haseman in 1911, on page 351 (plate 60) of the Annals of the Carnegie Museum, in his annotated catalog of the cichlid fishes collected by the Carnegie Museum expedition to central South America of 1907–1910. The name has stood as a valid binomial in its original combination ever since. The holotype (FMNH 54157, formerly Carnegie Museum CM 2723) and a single paratype (FMNH 54158) came from the Rio Grande of the Paraná at Jaguara, in Minas Gerais State, Brazil — the locality that gives the species its name. (The fish is named for the place Jaguara on the upper Paraná's Rio Grande, not for the better-known Rio Jaguari; the two are easily confused.) Within the genus, jaguarensis belongs to the Crenicichla lacustris group, the assemblage of Atlantic- and Paraná-drainage pikes anchored on Crenicichla lacustris; Lucena & Kullander's 1992 revision and Lucena's later work placed it there alongside Crenicichla haroldoi, Crenicichla iguassuensis, Crenicichla jupiaensis and others of the upper Paraná. The species was redescribed and its diagnostic counts refined in Varella's 2011 master's revision of the Paraná–Paraguay Crenicichla and in the annotated upper-Paraná floodplain survey of Ota, Deprá, Graça & Pavanelli (2018), which together separated it cleanly from the morphologically near-identical Crenicichla haroldoi. Kullander's treatment in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis et al. 2003) lists it as valid, as does Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Crenicichla jaguarensis has the classic pike-cichlid bauplan: a long, low, cylindrical body built for lying in wait and striking. Greatest body depth fits roughly 4.0–5.3 times into the standard length, the head is large (2.9–3.4 times in SL) with a terminal mouth, and the premaxilla and dentary carry many rows of small teeth. Maximum recorded size is modest for the genus — FishBase cites 6 in standard length, while the upper-Paraná floodplain survey records specimens to 7.5 in (about 8 in) SL, so adults of roughly 6–8 in SL are the realistic ceiling. Meristics from the redescription: dorsal fin XIX–XXI with 10–12 soft rays, anal fin III,8–10, pectoral 15–17, pelvic I,5; the longitudinal scale series runs 46–58 (mode about 55), with 22–26 pored scales in the upper lateral line and 10–13 in the lower. The ground colour is a yellowish green. The diagnostic markings are a black suborbital stripe slanting down from the eye, a long dark-brown longitudinal band running from the gill cover to the caudal peduncle, dark-brown transverse bars crossing the flank, and brown spots scattered on the lateral-line scales. The soft dorsal and anal fins carry dark-brown spots that sometimes coalesce into stripes, and a black rounded blotch sits at the base of the caudal fin. Crenicichla jaguarensis is separated from its look-alike Crenicichla haroldoi chiefly by its less conspicuous lateral-line-scale spots and its slightly lower longitudinal scale count (46–58, mode 55, versus 52–61, mode 58 in haroldoi); both share the broad suborbital stripe and a lateral band more prominent than the vertical bars that characterise the Paraná lacustris-group pikes. As with Crenicichla generally, sexual dimorphism is expected to follow the genus pattern — males growing larger and longer-snouted, ripe females rounder-bellied and often showing reddish flush and white-edged markings on the dorsal fin — but it has not been documented in detail for this species.
Habitat
Crenicichla jaguarensis is endemic to the upper Paraná River basin of Brazil, with the type series taken from the Rio Grande of the Paraná at Jaguara, Minas Gerais. It is now known from across the upper Paraná floodplain and its tributaries — the Carnegie Museum staff first collected it on the Rio Grande, and modern Nupélia (State University of Maringá) surveys have captured it routinely in the floodplain since 2004, including tributaries of the Rio Ivaí such as the Rio Keller. This is the upper Paraná above the former Sete Quedas falls, a warm-temperate to subtropical river system of clear to lightly stained waters over sand, gravel and rock. Like other lacustris-group pikes it favours flowing stretches and structured margins — submerged wood, rock and marginal vegetation along the main channel and its lateral lagoons — where an ambush predator can hold station and wait. In-situ chemistry has not been published specifically for this species, but the upper Paraná floodplain is broadly soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral water (roughly pH 6.0–7.5) with temperatures cycling seasonally from the low 20s in the cool months into the high 20s °C in summer; depths in the shallow channel-margin and lagoon habitats it frequents are typically on the order of 3–10 ft, in keeping with congeners of the group recorded from sandy, boulder-strewn river reaches little more than a metre deep.
Feeding
Crenicichla jaguarensis is a carnivorous ambush predator, as the pike-cichlid body plan and large toothy mouth imply. FishBase places its trophic level at about 3.3, and the genus as a whole feeds on fishes, aquatic insects and other invertebrates taken with a rapid lunge from cover. Detailed stomach-content data have not been published for jaguarensis itself, but congeners in the lacustris group examined by Lucena have been found with fish remains, molluscs and insect material in their guts, consistent with a generalist predatory diet that shifts with size — smaller fish leaning on insect larvae and small invertebrates, larger adults taking proportionally more fish. In its community it functions as a mid-level piscivore of the river margins and lagoons, hunting by sight and ambush rather than active pursuit.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla jaguarensis has not been described from the wild or from captivity. Inference must come from the genus, where the pattern is consistent and well documented: pike cichlids form monogamous pairs that defend a territory together, with courtship built around mutual displays, lateral presentation and substrate inspection as the pair selects and cleans a spawning site. In Crenicichla the female typically takes the lead in tending the eggs while the male patrols and defends the wider territory, and pair bonds in the lacustris group are generally stable through the brood cycle. Pairs become markedly more aggressive toward conspecifics and other fishes once a spawning site is chosen.
Breeding
No spawning account exists for Crenicichla jaguarensis specifically, so its breeding is described here from the well-established genus pattern, which the lacustris-group pikes follow closely. Crenicichla are biparental substrate and cave spawners: the pair deposits adhesive eggs on a sheltered hard surface — the roof or wall of a rock crevice, a hollow under wood, or an excavated burrow — rather than in the open. The female guards and fans the clutch while the male defends the territory; after hatching, both parents shepherd the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry, which are moved between pits and guarded for some weeks. Clutch size is undocumented for this species; lacustris-group congeners of comparable size are reported to lay on the order of several hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure for a ~6–8 in pike), with the fry defended biparentally until they disperse. Breeding is presumed to be cued by the warm, rising-water conditions of the austral spring–summer wet season in the upper Paraná.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla jaguarensis is essentially a scientific-collection and survey fish rather than an aquarium-trade species; it is rarely if ever offered commercially, and no detailed hobbyist husbandry record for it appears in the literature. The guidance that follows is therefore generalised from keeping its lacustris-group relatives, which are well represented in the hobby. A single fish or a confirmed pair of a 6–8 in pike needs a long tank — on the order of 59 in / 5 ft of length (around 90–120 US gal) — aquascaped to give the fish what it uses in the river: ample cover in the form of driftwood tangles, rock caves and a few sturdy plants or roots, over a sand or fine-gravel bottom, with open swimming lanes between the structure. Water should mirror the warm, clear, near-neutral upper Paraná: roughly 72–81 °F, pH about 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard, kept clean with good filtration and regular water changes since pike cichlids are sensitive to fouled water. Diet is carnivorous — quality sinking pellets accepted once settled, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as earthworms, prawn, mussel and appropriately sized fish-free protein; live feeder fish are unnecessary and risk introducing disease. The temperament caveats of the group apply: these are predatory, territorial cichlids that will eat tankmates small enough to swallow and turn fiercely aggressive when paired and breeding, so tankmates should be robust, similarly sized and given room to stay clear. The single most common mistake is housing a pike with fish it regards as food, or pairing two in a tank too small to let a subordinate escape.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla jaguarensis as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022; it carries no CITES or CMS listing and the fish is rated harmless and of low fishing vulnerability. As a species distributed across the upper Paraná basin rather than confined to a single locality, it is far less exposed than the narrow-range endemics of the region. The backdrop, however, is a heavily modified river: the upper Paraná is among the most intensively dammed basins in South America, its flood-pulse and connectivity altered by a cascade of large reservoirs, and it has been widely invaded by non-native fishes following the inundation of the Sete Quedas falls. None of these pressures is documented as a present threat to this particular pike, but they are the context in which its long-term status should be read.
