A small, silver-bodied characid endemic to the Upper Paraná River basin of southeastern Brazil, Psalidodon paranae is one of the most frequently encountered fishes in the headwater streams and reservoirs of that highly diverse ecoregion. Omnivorous and adaptable, it has become a model organism for ecological research — particularly studies of how habitat degradation and impoundment reshape feeding behaviour in Neotropical stream fishes. The species is currently placed by many authors under the resurrected genus Psalidodon, though Psalidodon paranae remains the basionym in widespread use.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon paranae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1914, based on specimens from the Paraná drainage of Brazil. The specific epithet refers directly to the Paraná River system, the basin from which the type material was drawn. Older literature sometimes lists the fish as Astyanax scabripinnis paranae, treating it as a subspecies of the wide-ranging A. scabripinnis complex, but molecular and morphological work has since elevated it to full species rank.

A substantial revision of Astyanax sensu lato has resulted in the resurrection and application of the genus Psalidodon Spix & Agassiz, 1829 to many Neotropical characids formerly grouped under Astyanax. Psalidodon paranae (Eigenmann, 1914) is accordingly the combination used by a number of contemporary authors, with Psalidodon paranae as the basionym. The Catalog of Fishes governs valid nomenclature; users should cross-check current synonymy against Eschmeyer when citing the species formally. Regardless of generic placement, the specific identity of this Upper Paraná endemic is not in dispute.

Morphology

Psalidodon paranae is a moderately slender, laterally compressed characid with the silvery body plan typical of Astyanax. FishBase records a maximum total length of 6.5 in TL, though most individuals sampled in ecological field studies fall well short of this — specimens from the Verde River study ranged from approximately 1.8–5.3 in TL across 216 measured fish, indicating that the bulk of the population encountered in headwater habitats is sub-adult.

The species shares the general Astyanax gestalt: a silver to pale golden flank, a mid-lateral dark stripe that may intensify posteriorly toward the caudal peduncle, a transparent to faintly yellowish caudal fin, and the characteristic adipose fin of the family Characidae. Sexual dimorphism is subtle in most Astyanax; females may be noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid. Distinguishing P. paranae from sympatric congeners in the Paraná system requires meristic examination.

Habitat

Psalidodon paranae is restricted to the Upper Paraná River ecoregion of Brazil, primarily in the state of Paraná and adjacent areas of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. It inhabits both free-flowing headwater streams and impounded waters — its occurrence in the Alagados Reservoir (Paraná State) has been documented in ecological studies spanning the late 1990s, and it has been recorded as a dominant fish in the Verde River, a small tributary in the Upper Paraná basin.

The species is typically associated with shallow, fast-to-moderate-flow stretches of streams with riparian vegetation, but it adjusts to degraded habitats where native fringing vegetation has been cleared for agriculture or pasture. Research on the Verde River found it common in streams draining impacted catchments with degraded riparian buffers, making it a useful indicator species for baseline ecological assessment. Water conditions in the Upper Paraná headwaters are generally cool to warm-temperate, soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral.

Feeding

Psalidodon paranae is an opportunistic omnivore with a broad, flexible diet documented across 32 food categories in a detailed study of Verde River populations. Items recorded include aquatic and terrestrial plant material, beetles, adult and larval insects of multiple orders, and other invertebrates. The species shifts its dietary emphasis seasonally and in response to what is available locally, which is typical for opportunistic headwater characids that track allochthonous (terrestrial) input.

Spawning peaks during the austral summer (November to February in the Southern Hemisphere), which broadly corresponds to the wet season when terrestrial insects are most abundant and allochthonous input to streams is highest. A study on the Alagados Reservoir documented feeding ecology across multiple years, confirming the species' ability to exploit a wide range of food resources in both lotic and lentic environments. In the aquarium, P. paranae accepts standard prepared foods — flake, micro-pellets — alongside frozen and live invertebrate foods.

Mating

Like other Astyanax, P. paranae is an egg-scattering open spawner that broadcasts adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation and bottom substrate with no parental care. Reproductive activity is strongly seasonal in the wild, with spawning peaks documented during the austral summer months in the Upper Paraná basin — a period of elevated water temperatures, increased flow following seasonal rains, and abundant food resources that favour rapid larval growth.

Males do not maintain territories or build nests; courtship involves active pursuit and lateral displays typical of the genus. The absence of parental care and the seasonal concentration of reproduction are characteristic traits of small characids in Neotropical streams, where large numbers of small eggs are broadcast to increase fertilisation probability in flowing water.

Breeding

In captivity, Psalidodon paranae follows the standard characid breeding protocol: egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adults removed immediately after spawning to prevent egg predation. Conditioned adults will spawn readily at temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius; slightly raising temperature and feeding live or frozen invertebrates helps trigger spawning behaviour.

Eggs are small and adhesive, hatching within 24–48 hours at typical tropical temperatures. Fry are tiny and initially consume infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. No parental care is provided at any stage. The species has been bred by hobbyists and used in laboratory settings due to its hardiness and ease of maintenance, making captive reproduction straightforward for experienced characid keepers.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon paranae is a robust and adaptable tetra suited to community aquaria housing South American species. A shoaling fish by nature, it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals to express natural behaviour and reduce individual stress. In smaller groups the species can be fin-nippy toward slow-moving or long-finned tankmates, a trait shared by many active Astyanax.

The Upper Paraná headwaters it inhabits range in chemistry from soft and slightly acidic to moderately hard and near-neutral, and the species tolerates a reasonably broad range of water parameters in captivity. Temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius are appropriate, reflecting its origin in subtropical Brazilian streams that are cooler than equatorial Amazonian habitats. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and moderate current suits it well. It is an undemanding feeder, accepting flake, micro-pellets, and frozen foods. As an ecologically important and well-studied species in its native range, captive-kept individuals may stem from wild-caught stock or from hobbyist propagation.

Conservation

Psalidodon paranae has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; neither the name Psalidodon paranae nor the current combination Psalidodon paranae carries a published IUCN evaluation. The species is therefore considered Not Evaluated (NE) under IUCN criteria.

Despite its widespread abundance within the Upper Paraná ecoregion — where it is among the most commonly encountered small characids — the broader Upper Paraná basin faces significant and ongoing pressures. Extensive impoundment for hydroelectric generation, agricultural runoff and the removal of riparian vegetation, and urban expansion in southern Brazil have all degraded stream habitats across much of the basin. Research using P. paranae as a study species has specifically examined how impacted riparian zones alter fish feeding behaviour, underscoring the species' role as an ecological sentinel. Population trends in heavily impacted sub-catchments merit monitoring even in the absence of a formal IUCN assessment.
