Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla yjhui was described in 2019 by Lubomír Piálek, Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón and Oldřich Říčan, in the journal Hydrobiologia (vol. 832: 377–395), in a paper titled 'A new pelagic predatory pike cichlid… with parallel and reticulate evolution.' The holotype (MLP 11187, in the Museo de La Plata, 5 in standard length) was taken from the Embalse Urugua-í — the Urugua-í reservoir — at the camping ground, in the río Paraná basin of Misiones Province, Argentina (about 25°52′S, 54°33′W), with paratypes lodged at the MLP and the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales (MACN). Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids — well over a hundred valid 'pike cichlids' — and yjhui sits in the lacustris species group, specifically within the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, a cluster of closely related, largely sympatric pikes endemic to the middle Paraná and its tributaries that has become a textbook case of rapid, river-confined adaptive radiation. The work behind the species is the product of a decade of phylogenetic study by Piálek, Říčan, Casciotta, Almirón and Edward Burress. Their analyses gave yjhui an unusually tangled origin: mitochondrial DNA places it nested within the widespread Crenicichla mandelburgeri, while reduced-representation (ddRAD) genomic data show it to be of hybrid (reticulate) origin, sharing ancestry with Crenicichla ypo, one of the two related pikes alongside which it lives. A major 2023 revision of the pike cichlids by Marcelo Varella, Sven Kullander and collaborators split the old, sprawling Crenicichla into several genera (Wallaciia, Saxatilia, Hemeraia, Lugubria), but the lacustris-group species — including the whole mandelburgeri complex and yjhui with it — were retained in Crenicichla in the strict sense, so the name is unaffected by that reshuffle.
Morphology
Crenicichla yjhui has the classic elongate, cylindrical pike-cichlid build, with the dorsal and anal fins set far back and a bluntly pointed snout, the streamlined outline of a fish built to chase rather than to lie in wait. It is a medium-sized pike: the type series reached about 5 in standard length (roughly 5 in SL, on the order of 6.5 in in total length), making it comparable to its complex-mates rather than one of the giant pikes. The colour pattern is the species' most diagnostic feature and the source of its name. Against a pale grey to brownish ground colour it carries a single, continuous black lateral band running the length of the flank — and, crucially, it lacks the vertical bars and scattered dark spots that mark close relatives such as Crenicichla mandelburgeri and Crenicichla ypo. The describers also separated it on a relatively high lateral-scale count (about 53–64 in the E1 row) and on details of fin pigmentation. Sexual dimorphism follows a clear pattern: females typically carry a broad black longitudinal stripe in the dorsal fin, whereas males instead show rows of dark spots in the fin, and males grow somewhat larger and longer-snouted in the usual Crenicichla manner. The whole gestalt — slim body, pointed head, unbroken dark stripe — is convergent with the only other pelagic pike cichlid, the unrelated Crenicichla celidochilus of the Uruguay River, an example of the same body plan evolving twice for the same open-water hunting life.
Habitat
Crenicichla yjhui is endemic to a single small watershed: the Arroyo Urugua-í, a left-bank tributary of the middle Paraná River in Misiones Province, northeastern Argentina. Its known range is essentially the Urugua-í drainage and, very prominently, the large reservoir (Embalse Urugua-í) impounded on that stream — the type locality and the open water in which the species' pelagic habits are most easily seen. This makes yjhui unusual among pike cichlids in two ways at once: it occupies open, mid-water habitat rather than the rocky bottom most of its relatives cling to, and a substantial part of its habitat is a man-made standing-water body rather than flowing stream. The Urugua-í lies in the subtropical Atlantic-forest belt of Misiones, in waters that are soft to moderately mineralised and roughly circumneutral; no detailed in-situ chemistry was published with the description, but waters of this part of the Paraná system generally run around pH 6.5–7.5 and across a real seasonal temperature swing, roughly 64–82 °F through the year. The species is sympatric — and partly syntopic — with two other closely related endemic pikes of the same complex, Crenicichla ypo (a specialised snail-crusher) and the smaller Crenicichla yaha, the three partitioning the same short stretch of water by feeding very differently. As an open-water fish, yjhui ranges through the upper part of the water column rather than confining itself to the substrate; documented occurrence is in the shallow-to-mid depths of the reservoir and stream rather than deep water.
Feeding
Feeding is what sets Crenicichla yjhui apart. Where the great majority of pike cichlids are bottom-oriented ambush predators that lunge at prey from cover, yjhui is a pelagic predator that hunts in open water and feeds predominantly on fishes — a piscivore that pursues its prey through the middle of the water column. Together with the unrelated Crenicichla celidochilus of the Uruguay River it is one of only two pelagic species known in the entire large riverine genus, and the two arrived at this niche independently, a striking case of parallel evolution. Its slim, streamlined body, pointed snout and large mouth are the morphological signature of that open-water, fish-eating ecology. The mandelburgeri complex as a whole is a showcase of repeated trophic specialisation: from a generalist invertebrate-eating ancestor the group has produced, over and over, the same set of 'ecomorphs' — generalist invertivores, robust-jawed molluscivores that crush snails, crevice-pickers, algae-scraping periphyton grazers, and, in yjhui, the open-water piscivore. Because the complex's species are largely sympatric, this division of feeding roles is precisely how so many close relatives manage to coexist in one small drainage: yjhui takes the fishes of the open water while Crenicichla ypo crushes molluscs and Crenicichla yaha works the invertebrate fauna.
Mating
No detailed account of courtship or pair formation has been published for Crenicichla yjhui specifically, so its reproductive behaviour is inferred from the well-documented pattern across the genus. Pike cichlids are not shoaling fish; outside breeding they are solitary and territorial. Reproduction reorganises them into pairs — a male and a female form a bond and jointly establish and defend a breeding territory centred on a cave, crevice or other sheltered nest site. As in other Crenicichla, the female is the more conspicuously marked sex around spawning; in yjhui the sexes already differ in the dorsal fin (a solid stripe in females, rows of spots in males), and ripening females of the genus typically flush with contrasting colour that they present to the larger male during courtship. Pair formation in pike cichlids can be fraught, because males are substantially larger and an unready or mismatched female may be harassed; this, together with the species' rarity outside its native drainage, is why first-hand mating accounts for yjhui are essentially absent. Its open-water habits make it plausible that nest sites are sought along the structured margins of the reservoir and stream rather than in the open mid-water where the fish feeds.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla yjhui in the wild or in aquaria, and no fecundity figures have been published for it; the account here is drawn from its close relatives and from the genus as a whole, and should be read as genus-typical rather than species-confirmed. Crenicichla are biparental cave or crevice spawners. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — among rocks, under a ledge, or inside a hollow — and tends, cleans and fans them while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Clutch size in pike cichlids of this body size is on the order of a few hundred eggs (congeners typically lay roughly 100–500 adhesive eggs). The eggs hatch within a few days; the parents then move the wrigglers to pits, and once the fry are free-swimming both adults guard them as a tight school, leading them out to forage and herding them back to shelter at any disturbance. Parental care is extended and shared until the young disperse. In the subtropical Paraná system, spawning is most plausibly tied to the warm, high-water season.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla yjhui is essentially never seen in the ornamental trade. It is a narrow-range, scientifically collected fish known from a single Argentine reservoir and its feeder stream, not a commercial export, and there is no established body of hobbyist experience with it specifically. Anyone wishing to keep it would have to extrapolate from the husbandry of other medium-sized, subtropical Crenicichla of the lacustris group — which is well understood — and the following is offered on that basis, not as a tested protocol for this species. A pike of around 5 in SL (with the slim build adding length) needs a long tank: a single fish or a bonded pair is best housed in something on the order of 47 in / 4 ft or more (roughly 250+ litres), aquascaped with rockwork, driftwood and caves that create defended sightlines and retreats over a sand or fine-gravel bottom. Being a subtropical, partly open-water fish from the Paraná system, it wants cooler, well-oxygenated water than tropical Amazonian cichlids — a yearly range around 64–79 °F with a genuine cool season, soft to moderately hard water, and pH near neutral (about 6.5–7.5). Its pelagic, fish-hunting nature means open swimming space matters more than it would for a bottom-dwelling pike, and strong, clean, oxygenating flow suits it well. Diet is straightforward for a piscivore: meaty foods — earthworms, prawn, mussel, and live or frozen fish-substitutes — weaning onto good sinking and slow-sinking pellets, with no reliance on feeder fish. The cautions are the usual pike-cichlid ones, sharpened by this species' active predation: it is a committed fish-eater and will take any tankmate small enough to swallow, and it is intolerant of conspecifics outside a settled pair, so a roomy tank, careful pairing and the option to separate fish are essential. This is a specialist's fish, and its rarity means virtually all aquarists will only ever encounter related pikes rather than yjhui itself.
Conservation
Crenicichla yjhui has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — a direct search of the Red List returns no record for the species, consistent with its description only in 2019, after most Neotropical fish assessments were completed — so its formal status is Not Evaluated (NE). That absence of a status should not be read as security: yjhui is one of the most narrowly distributed cichlids imaginable, endemic to a single small drainage and its reservoir in Misiones, the kind of pinpoint range that ordinarily flags a species as vulnerable. Its habitat sits within the heavily transformed Atlantic-forest streamscape of Misiones, where deforestation, agricultural expansion and the damming of the Paraná and its tributaries for hydropower have reshaped the river network; the very reservoir that is the species' type locality is itself an impoundment, and the species' fortunes are now tied to the management of an artificial water body. Because the whole mandelburgeri complex consists of many such single-tributary endemics, the group is regarded as a conservation priority among Neotropical fishes, and yjhui's lack of a Red List category reflects a gap in assessment rather than an established absence of risk. It carries no CITES listing.
