Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma tucurui was formally described by the German aquarist-ichthyologist Wolfgang Staeck in 2003, in the third volume of his Cichliden-Lexikon (Südamerikanische Zwergbuntbarsche, Dähne Verlag), on pages 112–113. For roughly fifteen years before that it had circulated only as an undescribed trade form, "Apistogramma sp. Tucurui" or simply the "Tucuruí-Apistogramma" — first collected by Arthur Werner in 1987 near Jacundá, east of the newly built Tucuruí reservoir, and written up in the German hobby press through the late 1980s and 1990s. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the holotype as MTD F 27046 in the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden, with paratypes distributed among Dresden (MTD F 27047, 27487–88), the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW), the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn (ZFMK) and the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (ZMB 33939). The type locality is precise: a brook in the Rio Tocantins system at highway BR-150, about 6 mi south of Jacundá, Pará, Brazil. The Catalog lists no synonyms and recognises the name as valid. Within the genus, Apistogramma tucurui is placed in the Apistogramma regani species-group — the assemblage of broadly built, single-band dwarf cichlids that includes Apistogramma regani and Apistogramma eunotus — though, as the long-time Apistogramma.com moderator Mike Wise notes, its multi-striped pattern makes it one of the most divergent members of that group. A closely related, caudally plain form (the original hobby import) is treated by specialists as Apistogramma cf. tucurui.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized Apistogramma. No formal maximum length appears in FishBase, but breeders consistently report males reaching roughly 3–3.5 in (about 3 to 3.5 inches) total length and females closer to 2 in (around 2 inches) — large for the genus but not a giant. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed dwarf-cichlid shape. What sets Apistogramma tucurui apart is its livery. Where most Apistogramma carry a single broad lateral band along the midflank, mature males of this species are crossed by a set of fine horizontal pinstripes — by some counts as many as seven on the head and up to nine along the flanks, formed by dark pigment between the rows of scales and running above as well as below the usually faint lateral band. Numerous tiny black spots speckle the gill cover. The ground colour is a golden yellow on the head and belly grading to blue or turquoise on the rear body, dorsal and anal fins; in displaying or aggressive fish the stripes deepen toward wine-red. Females show the same diagnostic striping but more subdued, and when in brood care they turn the intense yellow-and-black of a guarding Apistogramma female, the lateral band breaking into a row of blotches. The broad lateral band recalls that of the widespread Peruvian Apistogramma eunotus. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger, more colourful and more elaborately finned; keepers separate the sexes by examining the caudal fin under magnification, where males carry fine spangling that females lack.
Habitat
Apistogramma tucurui is a narrow-range endemic of the lower Rio Tocantins basin in the Brazilian state of Pará, recorded only from the surroundings of the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam in and around the municipality of Jacundá. Despite the dam-side distribution, it is not a fish of the reservoir itself: collectors describe it from small forest streams and overflow swamps (igarapés) on the eastern side of the impoundment, near Jacundá Nova, in open habitat fringed with sedge-like aquatic plants (Cyperaceae, Eleocharis) over largely vegetation-free sandy bottoms. The water there is soft, low in dissolved minerals, lightly tea-stained and acidic — field pH measured between roughly 5.5 and 6.0 — but, as the Brazilian collector Marco Lacerda emphasised after sampling the type region himself, it is explicitly not a true blackwater fish; he found it in clear, unpolluted farmland streams alongside tetras. The IUCN assessment likewise characterises the habitat as low-productivity, acidic water with aquatic macrophytes. Reported in-situ temperatures sit in the warm-tropical band typical of the eastern Amazon lowlands (roughly 75–82 °F). The fish is genuinely uncommon in nature: even intensive collecting by three people yielded only about twenty specimens, and most dwarf-cichlid biomass in the area belongs to a local population of Apistogramma agassizii rather than to Apistogramma tucurui.
Feeding
Like the rest of its genus, Apistogramma tucurui is a benthic micropredator, working the sand and leaf-and-plant litter of its streams for small invertebrates. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a carnivore that takes tiny animal prey — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other meiofauna sheltering in the substrate — rather than plant matter. In captivity it readily takes live and frozen foods (newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm) and will accept quality dry foods, and keepers report fast growth on a mixed live-and-dry diet. In its open, sandy, sedge-fringed stream habitat it functions as a small bottom-oriented predator of the macrophyte margins, and is itself prey for the larger characins and other predators that share the water.
Mating
The defining behavioural trait of Apistogramma tucurui is an unusually strong intraspecific aggression, even by the combative standards of dwarf cichlids. Males will not tolerate one another, and a dominant male harasses non-receptive females relentlessly; early keepers found that even a one-metre tank could hold at most a single male with two or more females, and recommended generous floor space and broken sight-lines to spread out the conflict. The mating system is the harem-polygyny common to the genus: a male holds a larger territory overlapping the smaller territories of several females, each of which claims and defends a cave. A ripe female signals readiness by flushing bright yellow and courting at her chosen cave. Some keepers report the species as more peaceable than its reputation when given a heavily decorated tank with abundant cover, suggesting much of the lethal aggression is an artefact of cramped quarters; even so, the consensus is that Apistogramma tucurui needs more space and more visual breaks than the average Apistogramma to spawn without casualties.
Breeding
Apistogramma tucurui is a cave-spawning, maternal-care dwarf cichlid in the standard genus pattern: the female attaches her eggs to the roof or wall of a cave — in aquaria, typically an inverted or sideways clay pot — then tends and fans the clutch and later the free-swimming fry while the male patrols the wider territory. Reported clutches are modest, on the order of 40 eggs of a pale burgundy colour, and a recurring theme in keepers' accounts is comparatively low productivity: even when spawning is frequent and fertile, the species raises fewer fry per brood than most regani-group relatives, and females have a reputation as inconsistent, sometimes poor mothers prone to losing or eating larvae. Breeders have succeeded in moderately soft, slightly acidic water across a fairly wide window — spawns are reported from about pH 5.0 up to 7.2 and at temperatures around 75–79 °F — which, with the field data, makes this a comparatively undemanding spawner chemically; the limiting factor is behaviour, not water. Workarounds that improve fry survival include removing the eggs for artificial incubation, or giving the parents a very large, sparsely stocked tank so the female can shepherd fry without harassment; under good conditions the young grow quickly on baby brine shrimp and reach sexual maturity young. One curiosity from the early breeding literature: a female Apistogramma tucurui housed with Apistogramma geisleri produced viable hybrid offspring, all of which matured as males resembling the paternal species — a reminder of how closely knit the regani-group lineages are.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma tucurui is a genuinely uncommon aquarium fish. It has moved in and out of the European and North American hobby since the late 1980s, but has never achieved the steady availability of species like Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma agassizii, and aquarium experience with it remains sparse. That scarcity is worth stating plainly: most husbandry advice for this species is either extrapolated from genus-typical Apistogramma care or drawn from a small number of published keeper accounts, principally those gathered on The Krib mailing-list archive and the Apistogramma.com forum. Where generalisation from close relatives is being applied, that is flagged below.
The species' documented aggression sets the minimum tank footprint. A single pair can technically be housed in a 60-litre (roughly 60 × 12 in footprint) aquarium, but this is barely enough to give a harassed female an escape route, and most experienced keepers recommend a minimum of 20–25 US gal for a pair and at least 30–40 US gal (39.5 in or longer) for a proper harem of one male with two to three females. A long, shallow tank with a large footprint matters more than height. The substrate should be fine sand — the species forages by sifting — with a layer of dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak) scattered across it. Leaf litter doubles as both foraging ground and micro-territory boundary, and the tannins it releases tilt the chemistry gently toward what the fish naturally inhabits. Dense planting around the tank perimeter or on a floating raft is useful for diffusing sight-lines; the centre of the tank should remain relatively open sand so dominant fish cannot corner subordinates. Each female needs at least one cave she can claim as her own — small unglazed clay pots placed on their side, coconut shells with an entrance hole, or commercially sold cave ceramics all work. Provide more caves than there are females so there is always an uncontested option.
Water chemistry should lean soft and acidic to match the species' natural streams in the lower Tocantins. Reverse-osmosis water remineralised to a low general hardness (under 10 °dH), a pH held in the 5.5–6.5 range, and a temperature of 75–79 °F covers both the field data and the range over which aquarium spawns have been reported. The fish tolerates somewhat higher pH in captivity — some breeders have spawned it up to pH 7.2 — but consistent reproduction and the most vivid colouration are generally reported at the lower end. A mature, well-cycled tank with gentle filtration (a sponge filter or a spray-bar turned down so it produces minimal current) is standard; the species' soft-water biotope has low ionic strength, and strong biological filtration matters more than high flow.
Tankmates need careful thought. Other species that belong to the same lower Tocantins biotope include small characins such as Hyphessobrycon-type tetras, which serve as useful dither fish — their open-water presence signals to the cichlids that conditions are safe, reducing skittishness and reducing the tendency of males to redirect aggression inward. Avoid any fish large enough to stress or chase the Apistogramma, and avoid other bottom-dwelling cichlids or similar-sized cave-users that would compete for territory. Corydoras of species from overlapping drainages are a reasonable choice for the lower levels as long as tank footprint is generous. Keeping Apistogramma tucurui with other Apistogramma species is not recommended; even in a large tank the interspecific aggression typical of the genus can produce casualties.
For keepers attempting to breed the species, the most often-cited obstacle is not spawning itself — the fish will spawn across a fairly wide chemical window — but raising the fry. Females of Apistogramma tucurui have a well-documented reputation as inconsistent mothers: clutches are small (around forty eggs is the commonly reported figure), and females sometimes abandon or consume larvae during the first few days after hatching. Breeders who have succeeded most reliably either remove the eggs at or just after fertilisation for artificial incubation in a hatching container with gentle aeration and a small dose of methylene blue, or they maintain the pair in a very large, very sparsely stocked tank where the female experiences minimal disturbance. Fry that pass the first week grow readily on newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm. The primary difficulty is behavioural rather than chemical, which makes Apistogramma tucurui a fish best attempted by keepers who already have experience managing the aggression dynamics of larger Apistogramma species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classifies Apistogramma tucurui as Data Deficient (DD), in a global assessment carried out by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), last assessed 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The reasoning is the honest one for a fish known from a single small area: it is recorded only from the surroundings of the Tucuruí dam near Jacundá in the Tocantins basin, there are no data on its abundance or population trend, and the lack of occurrence records makes its true range — and therefore its real level of threat — impossible to judge. Tellingly, the assessment reads the type locality as already bearing obvious signs of human alteration, which it takes as evidence that the species tolerates some habitat disturbance; the specific pressures it flags are the diffuse impacts of agriculture and cattle ranching and of the road network around the type locality, rather than the dam directly. Brazilian regulation does not currently permit its commercial ornamental collection, so trade pressure is not a documented threat, though the fish moves in the international hobby. The dam itself looms over the species' story: the Tucuruí impoundment, completed on the Rio Tocantins in the 1980s, drowned and fragmented a vast stretch of river — the same project that obliterated the type locality of the pike-cichlid relative Teleocichla cinderella nearby — and the original collectors worried even in the 1990s that further dam works might imperil Apistogramma tucurui's small known habitat. As a narrow-range fish in a basin transformed by one of the Amazon's biggest hydroelectric schemes and the agricultural frontier that followed it, Apistogramma tucurui is exactly the kind of species whose status is uncertain precisely because so little has been documented; the Red List's own recommendation is for basic study of its distribution, abundance and population trend, and for protection of its habitat.
