Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla stocki was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1991, in his doctoral revision of the South American pike-cichlid genus Crenicichla — a single monograph that erected fifteen new species at once and reorganised the genus into species groups. The type locality is Capuaraná, in the Rio Tocantins system of Pará, Brazil; the holotype (INPA 2851) is held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia in Manaus, with paratypes distributed among INPA, the Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, and the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam where Ploeg worked. No earlier names fall into its synonymy — it is known by this one binomial throughout its history.
Ploeg placed stocki in the reticulata group, the assemblage of pikes that earlier authors had treated as the separate genus Batrachops (Heckel, 1840). These are the heavier-bodied, blunt-snouted, somewhat 'salami-shaped' pikes with non-depressible oral teeth, as distinct from the slender, multi-rowed-toothed forms of Crenicichla proper. Sven Kullander had synonymised Batrachops with Crenicichla in 1986, and that arrangement held for decades. The most recent generic revision — Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández (2023), an integrative phylogenetic study that broke much of the old genus into several genera — kept stocki within Crenicichla, resurrecting Batrachops only at subgenus rank to hold this lineage. We follow that placement here, retaining the long-familiar Crenicichla heading while noting that stocki sits in the subgenus Batrachops. Before Ploeg's split, specimens from the Rio Tocantins had simply been identified as a population of the widespread Crenicichla reticulata; Ploeg's 1991 revision separated them on a combination of characters, most visibly the position of the nostrils (a detail present in reticulata and absent in stocki) alongside a run of smaller differences in fin-ray and scale counts — distinctions fine enough that Ploeg himself noted they are of little practical use for telling the two apart in an aquarium.
Morphology
Crenicichla stocki is a medium-sized pike cichlid, reaching about 10 in in total length. Like other members of the Batrachops group it has the characteristically robust, deep-bodied build of these pikes rather than the eel-like slenderness of the dwarf and 'true' Crenicichla — a fuller body and comparatively short, blunt snout, with the strong dentition typical of an ambush piscivore. The elongate dorsal and anal fins run back toward the tail, and the mouth is large and terminal, set to engulf prey whole. The four narrow-sense Batrachops species — reticulata, stocki, semifasciata and cyanonotus — share a distinctive look Ploeg used to tell them from other pikes on sight alone: a blueish-grey body with dark pigment concentrated at the base of each scale, heaviest along the mid-lateral line, on an unusually plump, 'beefy' body reinforced by the broad head and short snout. On stocki specifically, that scale pigment resolves into slanting double bands running down the flank that stay distinct rather than fusing into a single band, as they do in semifasciata and cyanonotus — a field mark shared only with reticulata, from which stocki is told apart because reticulata additionally carries fine, interrupted longitudinal stripes along the body that stocki lacks. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for stocki specifically, but pike cichlids of this group generally show the genus-typical pattern in which adult females develop a rounded, light-edged blotch (an ocellus) in the dorsal fin and a fuller belly when in breeding condition, while males grow somewhat larger and longer-finned; the difference is subtle outside the spawning season.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Tocantins–Araguaia drainage of the eastern Brazilian Amazon, and its documented range is wider than the type locality alone suggests. Beyond the lower and middle Tocantins in Pará (Warzel, 1994), field-collected specimens have also been photographed from the upper Rio das Mortes near Nova Xavantina in Mato Grosso — a headwater tributary of the Araguaia, hundreds of kilometres upstream of the type locality — and Uwe Werner recorded two further individuals from the upper Tocantins itself in 1988. Ploeg regarded stocki as an ecologically unspecialised pike whose patchy, wide-spread occurrence through the basin contrasts with the handful of genuinely endemic, habitat-specialised Tocantins pikes (such as C. cametana, C. cyclostoma and C. jegui) that are restricted by their adaptations to particular rapids; stocki's isolation from its closest relative, C. reticulata, is better explained by the numerous rapids that break up the lower Tocantins than by any special habitat requirement. Unlike the rheophilic dwarf pikes and Teleocichla that cling to the rocky rapids of the same rivers, Crenicichla stocki is a fish of quieter water throughout this range: per Ploeg (1986), it has been collected only from slow-flowing tributaries and oxbow lakes — biotopes that recur throughout the Amazon basin — including localities (such as Icangui) described as having sandy bottoms with stands of shrubs and flooded marginal vegetation. That biotope — calm, structured backwaters rather than the open channel or the cataracts — fits the ambush habits of a stout-bodied pike. Published in-situ chemistry is sparse, but the water is the warm, soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral type characteristic of these backwaters; FishBase summarises the species' tolerated envelope as pH about 5.5 to 7.5, hardness from very soft upward, and temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F. These backwater habitats are shallow — typically a metre or two deep over the sand — though no precise depth band has been published for the species.
Feeding
Crenicichla stocki is a predator, like all pike cichlids. The genus comprises ambush hunters that lie still among cover and then lunge, using a large protrusible mouth to suck in and seize prey, which is swallowed whole rather than chewed — pikes 'gape and suck' rather than bite and process. The heavier Batrachops-group pikes, with their blunt snouts and stout non-depressible teeth, take fish and large invertebrates; in slow, vegetated backwaters a fish of this size would feed on small fishes, shrimps, aquatic insect larvae and other benthic invertebrates flushed from the leaf litter and submerged shrubs. No gut-content study has been published for stocki itself, so the specifics rest on the consistent ecology of the group and on FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3, which places it squarely among carnivorous mid-level predators. In its community it functions as one of the resident ambush piscivores of the Tocantins backwaters.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been observed or described for Crenicichla stocki in the wild or in aquaria, so what follows is the well-established pattern of the genus rather than a record specific to this fish. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs and are territorial substrate brooders. Pair formation typically follows a period of mutual display and assessment, after which the pair jointly defends a territory centred on a chosen spawning site — most often the inside of a cave, a crevice, or the underside of wood or rock. Courtship in the group involves lateral displays, fin-spreading and, in females, the development of the bright dorsal-fin ocellus and a swollen, colourful belly that signals readiness. As with most pikes, the female takes the leading role in tending the eggs while the male holds the perimeter, and the bond can be intense; mismatched or crowded fish may turn aggressive. For stocki specifically these details remain inferred from its congeners until someone documents a spawning.
Breeding
Breeding of Crenicichla stocki has not been documented; no clutch counts, spawning observations, or fry-rearing records exist for the species in the literature or the hobby. By the consistent biology of the genus it is expected to be a biparental cave or crevice spawner: the female lays a single adhesive clutch on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity, both parents guard and the female fans and tends the eggs, and after hatching the wrigglers are moved and the free-swimming fry are shepherded and defended by the pair. Larger Crenicichla of this body size typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs per spawn (congeners commonly produce clutches of roughly 100–400 eggs), a genus-typical figure offered here only as a placeholder, since stocki itself has never been spawned on record. Parental care in the group is prolonged and biparental, with the fry guarded for some weeks. Until the species is bred — most likely first in captivity — these statements stand as informed inference, not observation.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla stocki is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a localised Tocantins–Araguaia endemic that is rarely collected and almost never exported under its own name, and there are no established accounts of it being kept or bred; what little reaches hobbyists tends to arrive mixed into 'assorted pike' shipments and is easily confused with other Batrachops-group species. So any husbandry guidance is extrapolated from comparable medium-sized pike cichlids rather than from experience with this fish.
On that basis, a single specimen or a confirmed pair of a roughly 10 in pike needs a long tank — on the order of 59 in and 90 US gal or more — floored with sand and broken up with driftwood, rockwork and at least one or two genuine caves, since these are cover-loving ambush fish that need places to hide and, if a pair forms, to spawn. Water should mirror the warm, soft, mildly acidic backwaters of the Tocantins: roughly 75–82 °F, pH around 6.0–7.0, and modest hardness, with strong filtration but gentle flow to suit a slow-water species. They are predators and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be too large to be prey yet not so boisterous as to bully a retiring pike; robust, similarly sized characins and other large, peaceable cichlids are the usual choice. Pike cichlids can be territorial and intolerant of conspecifics outside of a bonded pair, so a divided or very large tank is wise if more than one is kept. A meaty diet of earthworms, prawn, mussel and other frozen and live foods, weaned where possible onto quality pellets, suits the group; live feeder fish are unnecessary and best avoided. None of this has been validated on stocki specifically — treat it as a starting point drawn from its relatives.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla stocki as Data Deficient (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade [ICMBio], published 2022). The Data Deficient category reflects how little is known about the species' true range, abundance and population trend — it is recorded from only a limited part of the Tocantins drainage, and the population trend is listed as unknown. The assessment notes that several hydroelectric dams have been built along the Tocantins River, and these may have negatively affected the species: the Tocantins–Araguaia basin is one of the most heavily dammed river systems in the Amazon, and large impoundments such as Tucuruí have transformed long reaches of the river, fragmenting habitats and converting flowing tributaries into reservoirs. For a fish restricted to the slow tributaries and oxbow lakes of this basin, such hydrological change is a plausible pressure, but without targeted survey data its actual status cannot be judged — which is precisely why it remains Data Deficient. The species carries no CITES listing. Better field study of the lower and middle Tocantins is the obvious need before its conservation status can be resolved.
