Geophagus grammepareius is a small, slender eartheater endemic to the clear, fast-flowing rivers of Venezuela's Orinoco basin, where it sifts sand on the bottoms of the Caura and Caroní drainages. Described in 1992 by Sven Kullander, Ramiro Royero and Donald Taphorn, it is named for the bold dark stripe that runs from the eye across the cheek to the gill cover, a marking it keeps into adulthood and shares with only one close relative. A member of the surinamensis species group, it belongs to the lineage of geophagines in which delayed larvophilous mouthbrooding evolved, the parents sheltering free-swimming young in the throat rather than guarding eggs on open substrate.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus grammepareius was described in 1992 by Sven O. Kullander, Ramiro Royero and Donald C. Taphorn in a paper that introduced two new Orinoco eartheaters at once — the other being Geophagus taeniopareius — in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 3, number 4, pages 359-375). The authority is conventionally cited as Kullander & Taphorn, 1992 (the two who formally diagnosed the species within the joint paper), though the full author string Kullander, Royero & Taphorn is also widely used and is the form FishBase and several later checklists adopt. The holotype, MCNG 25480, was collected in the Río Caroní drainage at the middle Río Claro in Vuelta El Susto, Bolívar State, Venezuela (roughly 7°40'N, 63°08'W), and is backed by a long series of paratypes split between the museum at Guanare (MCNG) and the Natural History Museum, London (NHM). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid and the species as an Orinoco-basin endemic, with no junior synonyms. Within the genus, grammepareius is placed in the surinamensis species group of Geophagus sensu stricto, the assemblage of true eartheaters that brood their young in the mouth; its closest relative is taeniopareius, with which it co-occurs in the Caura and from which it was carefully distinguished in the original description.

Thomas Weidner's monograph on the genus notes that grammepareius sits inside a wider, still-unresolved knot of Guiana Shield rapids populations: sibling forms turning up in rapids across the region are provisionally assigned to argyrostictus, taeniopareius or grammepareius in a broad sense, or lumped into an informal narrow-barred, thickset species complex (aquarists' 'Tapajós Orange-Head' among them), and Weidner expected the roughly eleven Geophagus species recognised at the time he wrote to grow substantially as these populations are sorted out. That caution still applies to any close relative claimed for grammepareius outside its confirmed Caura–Caroní range.

Morphology

Geophagus grammepareius is among the smaller members of its genus. Kullander, Royero & Taphorn's own type series tops out at 4 in standard length (about 5.5 in total length at most), consistent with FishBase's listed maximum of 4 in SL, and most reports place mature fish in the 4–6 in total-length range — quite possibly the smallest species in Geophagus, a modest eartheater by the standards of the bulky surinamensis-group giants. The body is the typical Geophagus form: laterally compressed and fairly elongate, higher-backed than its closest relative taeniopareius, with a steep forehead, a small underslung mouth set for sifting, and the long, low dorsal fin of a bottom-working cichlid. Base coloration is the clearest way to tell the two sister species apart: where taeniopareius carries a vivid yellow flank, grammepareius wears a plainer brownish ground broken by faint vertical bars and rows of pearly spangles, with light spots scattered across the middle and upper caudal fin — taeniopareius lacks these caudal spots. Each flank scale carries a small iridescent blue spot, and a horizontal blue-white stripe runs from the corner of the mouth up to meet the cheek stripe; the dorsal fin has a black edge. The single most distinctive feature, and the one the name commemorates, is a sharp dark stripe that runs from the eye back across the cheek to the edge of the operculum, retained in adults and always clearly visible; among Geophagus, only grammepareius and taeniopareius keep this cheek stripe into maturity. The lateral spot, likewise shared by both species, sits below the upper lateral line and covers only a few scales. The original describers separated grammepareius from taeniopareius by a further suite of details: the absence of horizontal flank stripes, thicker lips, the lack of microbranchiospines, and consistently lower counts (modally fifteen to sixteen dorsal spines, thirty E1-row scales, and 14+17 vertebrae). Diagnostically, the species also lacks the scaly sheath along the dorsal-fin base seen in its congeners. Sexual dimorphism has not actually been documented — Weidner notes that no information exists on it for this species — but the genus pattern is a reasonable working assumption: males somewhat larger with marginally extended fins, females smaller and rounder-bodied and not reliably told apart on colour alone.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, where it is known from the upper Caura and the lower Caroní river drainages — both clear-water tributaries draining the ancient Guiana Shield. The type series came from the Río Claro in the Caroní system in Bolívar State, and documented localities across both drainages are unusually well recorded for a rarely kept fish: in the Caroní system the Río Paragua, the Río Claro and the Río Tocoma, the Río Tocomita, and the area near Baño Bohimo; in the Caura system the Río Erebato and the Caño Adaua. The fish has since been recorded through the wider Caura, one of the most biodiverse and least disturbed river basins in Venezuela, much of it within Caura National Park.

Taking the Río Caroní as a yardstick, Weidner describes grammepareius as a fish of slow but constantly flowing water over a substrate of fine sand with accumulations of sunken wood; the shore is cloaked in dense brush that provides additional cover, but the fish itself favours open water over the sheltered margins. The water runs a brownish tea colour with several metres of visibility, is extremely soft (about 1° dGH) and markedly acidic (pH 5.2 at the type locality), and during the dry season sits around 84 °F — figures consistent with FishBase's broader envelope of pH 5.2 to 7.0 and 77–86 °F for the species, and a useful reminder that the low end of that range is not a hobby exaggeration but a measured field reading. Conductivity in Guiana Shield drainages generally is characteristically very low. As a benthopelagic sand-sifter it keeps to the bottom and lower water column of these rivers, working the open sand rather than the brush-choked margins; published depth figures for the species are lacking, but its habitat is the shallow, wadeable to a few-metres-deep river band typical of Shield tributaries, and that shallow range is the realistic figure to assume. It shares this habitat with its sister species taeniopareius and with the wider Orinoco cichlid community.

Feeding

Like all true Geophagus, grammepareius is a sand-sifting benthic invertivore — an 'eartheater' in the literal sense. It feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sorting the edible fraction with the gill rakers and pharyngeal apparatus and expelling the clean grains through the gill openings and mouth, a winnowing technique that lets it harvest small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, seeds and organic detritus buried in the substrate. FishBase estimates a low trophic level of about 2.5, the figure expected for a fish that lives off bottom invertebrates and detritus rather than other fish or plants. In its Shield-river community it occupies the sandy-bottom foraging niche, working open sand and gravel patches between rapids and pools, and its constant sifting turns over sediment and frees food for opportunistic followers — a small-scale ecological service common to the genus.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described in the wild for Geophagus grammepareius specifically, but its behaviour is expected to follow the well-documented pattern of the surinamensis group to which it belongs. These eartheaters form pairs that establish and jointly defend a spawning territory over open substrate, with mutual display, lateral posturing and substrate-cleaning preceding the spawn. Outside of breeding the genus is gregarious, and juveniles and non-reproductive adults tend to move in loose groups over the sand; pair bonds form within that social setting as fish ripen. Territoriality is moderate rather than fierce by cichlid standards — these are not the trench-digging, partner-killing combatants of some Neotropical genera — but a bonded pair will hold and patrol its patch against conspecifics and other bottom-feeders through the spawning cycle.

Breeding

Geophagus grammepareius belongs to the surinamensis species group, the lineage of South American eartheaters in which delayed, larvophilous biparental mouthbrooding evolved — the reproductive strategy analysed in detail for the genus by Wayne Leibel and colleagues (Buntbarsche Bulletin 216, American Cichlid Association). In this mode the pair spawns conventionally on a cleaned, open substrate surface and the adhesive eggs are tended in the open for the first day or two; once the embryos hatch or the larvae become mobile, the parents take the young into their mouths and brood them orally, alternating or sharing the duty between both sexes, releasing free-swimming fry to forage and gathering them back at any threat. This 'delayed' larvophily — guarding eggs first, then switching to mouthbrooding — is the hallmark of the group and distinguishes it both from the immediate ovophilous mouthbrooders and from the purely substrate-brooding eartheaters. Spawning-specific figures for grammepareius — clutch size, incubation period, fry counts — have not been published; the genus-typical pattern is small to moderate clutches (often in the low hundreds of eggs) brooded for one to a few weeks. Because the species is small and uncommon in the trade, documented aquarium spawnings are scarce, and what is known is inferred from its group placement rather than from a published breeding account of this particular fish.

In the aquarium

Geophagus grammepareius is rarely seen in the hobby — it is a small, modestly coloured Orinoco endemic that has never become a trade staple, and reliable first-hand keeping accounts are few. Weidner's monograph is blunt on the point: at the time he wrote it, the species had not yet reached hobbyists' aquaria at all, and no maintenance data existed beyond the reasonable assumption that it would keep like its close relative taeniopareius. That gap has narrowed only slightly since. Where it is kept, it should be treated as a typical small-to-mid sand-sifting eartheater. A group is the right way to keep it: like its congeners it is social and does best in numbers, so a tank of at least 47 in (around 65–90 US gal) suits a small shoal, more for a larger group. The single non-negotiable furnishing is a deep bed of fine, soft sand — these fish feed by taking sand into the mouth, and gravel or coarse substrate prevents normal feeding and can abrade the gills. Décor of smooth water-worn rocks, driftwood and scattered leaf litter mirrors the Shield-river biotope; open sand for foraging matters more than dense planting.

Water should be warm and clean: 77–86 °F, pH on the soft and slightly acidic side (the species tolerates roughly 5.2 to 7.0) and low hardness, reflecting the soft clear waters of the Caura and Caroní. As with all eartheaters, water quality is critical — the genus is sensitive to dissolved-waste accumulation and prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion when nitrates climb, so generous filtration, brisk but not turbulent flow, and large regular water changes are essential. Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet of small sinking foods (quality pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp) taken from the substrate keeps them in condition; avoid relying on floating foods, which work against their natural feeding posture.

Temperament is peaceable. Outside of breeding these are calm, sociable fish that will not trouble tankmates too large to swallow, and they make good community residents alongside medium peaceful South Americans — other calm geophagines, larger tetras and headstanders, and similarly sized non-aggressive cichlids. The main caveats are the usual eartheater ones: do not house them with boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates, do not skimp on water changes, and do not use the wrong substrate. Given its rarity, anyone obtaining this species should treat it as a project fish worth documenting rather than an off-the-shelf community cichlid.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus grammepareius as Least Concern (assessed 19 May 2017 by Gabriela Echevarría of the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas, published in the 2019 assessment; population trend unknown). It carries no CITES listing. The species is a narrow-range endemic of the upper Caura and lower Caroní drainages, but those Guiana Shield rivers — particularly the Caura, much of which lies within Caura National Park — remain among the better-protected and less-disturbed freshwater systems in Venezuela, which underpins the favourable assessment. It is of little or no interest to commercial fisheries and only marginal to the ornamental trade. The broader pressures on the region are real but not documented as a present threat to this fish: the lower Caroní has been heavily impounded for hydroelectric power (the Guri dam and its reservoir), and gold mining with its attendant mercury contamination and sedimentation is an expanding concern across the Bolívar-state goldfields that drain into both basins. None of these is flagged as an immediate danger to grammepareius, but they are the backdrop against which the long-term status of a small, basin-restricted Shield endemic should be read.
