Taxonomy & naming
The slate cory was described in 1961 by the American ichthyologist Stanley Weitzman, in a paper titled simply 'A new catfish, Corydoras concolor (Callichthyidae) from Venezuela', published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington. The type locality is Las Mangas, in a tributary of the Río Parguaza, in western Bolívar state, Venezuela (6°20'N, 67°10'W), within the Orinoco basin. It has no synonyms, and belongs to family Callichthyidae, the South American armoured catfishes. The specific name concolor is Latin for 'of uniform colour,' a reference to its plain, unpatterned grey body — a contrast to the spotted and striped corys around it.
Like the rest of the old genus, concolor has been caught up in the recent shake-up of Corydoras. The genus had grown past 170 species and was shown to be non-monophyletic, and in 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a phylogeny and revised classification of the Corydoradinae (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) that broke it into several genera, including Brochis, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster and Hoplisoma. Under that arrangement the slate cory belongs to the large lineage that takes the resurrected name Hoplisoma, so the current Catalog of Fishes combination is Hoplisoma concolor (Weitzman, 1961) — and FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes both now head the species that way. The aquarium trade still overwhelmingly says 'Corydoras concolor,' so we keep that as the heading while recording Hoplisoma as the accepted genus.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized, distinctly deep-bodied cory, reaching about 2–2.5 in standard length, with the body depth fitting only 2.1–2.4 times into the standard length — noticeably chunkier and taller-backed than slimmer congeners. Like all members of the family it wears armour instead of scales: two rows of overlapping bony scutes down each flank, meeting in a dorsal ridge, over a short, compact, blunt-snouted head with the usual three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth. The eye is relatively large and the dorsal-fin spine fairly long.
The colour is what sells it. The ground is a uniform slate-grey, but a settled, well-kept fish develops a smoky blue cast over the face and chest and glints of green and violet along the flank. Mature males add a warm reddish-orange wash across the nape and into the long dorsal fin, and develop a noticeably extended, taller dorsal — the species' showiest feature and its best sexing cue. Stressed or freshly imported fish often look washed-out and pale, hiding all of this, which is why the species can be underwhelming in a shop tank and lovely once established. As in all corys, the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff, mildly venomous spine.
Habitat
Corydoras concolor has a small natural range, restricted to parts of the Orinoco river system in western Venezuela, in and around the Río Parguaza drainage of Bolívar state where it was first collected. Compared with the continent-spanning corys of the hobby, this is a narrowly distributed fish, which is central to its conservation picture.
Its waters are the warm, soft, often tannin-stained streams and tributaries of the Orinoco lowlands and the bordering shield country. Reported parameters are warm and on the soft, slightly acidic side: temperatures around 72–79 °F, a pH band from acidic to neutral (roughly 5.5–7.0, with some references extending toward 8.0) and soft to moderately hard water. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a modified, vascularised hindgut — an adaptation that lets it cope with the warm, oxygen-poor conditions of slow tropical streams and pools.
Feeding
The slate cory is a benthic foraging omnivore, like its relatives. In the wild it works the bottom, sifting sand and soft sediment through its barbels and gills to extract small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and organic detritus. In the aquarium it readily takes all sinking prepared foods — tablets, granules and larger sinking flakes — and relishes live and frozen fare such as bloodworm, whiteworm, grindal worm (Enchytraeus), Daphnia and Tubifex, the last especially useful for bringing a group into spawning condition. A varied diet keeps the colours strong; it should never be left to scavenge other fishes' leftovers or expected to 'clean' the tank.
Mating
Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers without a pair bond, and concolor uses the genus's distinctive 'T-position' courtship. When a female is ripe the group becomes active and a male positions himself at right angles to her head, forming the T; she appears to take his milt, which is thought to pass quickly through her gut to fertilise the small batch of eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She carries those eggs to a site she has cleaned — typically the aquarium glass or a clump of fine-leaved plants — and presses the sticky eggs into place, a few at a time. The sequence repeats over a spawning session until a clutch on the order of dozens of eggs has been distributed across the chosen surfaces.
Breeding
The slate cory is bred in the hobby, with dozens of documented spawnings, though it is regarded as a little more demanding than the easy beginner corys. Condition a group well on live and frozen foods and skew the sex ratio toward males. Spawning is typically triggered, as with other corys, by a large, cooler water change with soft water that mimics the onset of the rains, together with increased oxygenation and flow. The adhesive eggs are laid on the glass or among fine plants and receive no parental care — the adults will eat them — so the breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Lifted eggs are moved to identical, well-oxygenated water, usually with a little methylene blue or an alder cone to deter fungus. Incubation runs about three to four days, and once the fry have absorbed their yolk sacs they take microworm and brine shrimp nauplii; they do better raised over a thin layer of sand than on bare glass.
In the aquarium
Concolor is a rewarding, peaceful community cory once its modest needs are met. It is a shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of at least six — more is better — in which it is confident and active; kept alone or in pairs it is withdrawn and dull-coloured. A group wants real floor space: a base footprint of around 80 by 12 in or more suits a long-term group, with the emphasis on bottom area rather than height.
Substrate is the one non-negotiable. Provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel and keep it scrupulously clean, because these fish feed by burying their snouts and sifting; sharp or dirty gravel erodes and infects their barbels, leaving the blunted, stubby faces that mark poor husbandry. Border the open feeding area with driftwood and planting, with overhanging wood, rock or tall and floating plants to provide the shade that settles a shy group and brings out the blue and red. Keep the water warm (about 73–79 °F), soft and slightly acidic to neutral, well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with gentle flow and regular changes. It is utterly peaceful and mixes well with small, calm community fish — tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, dwarf cichlids — and never with anything boisterous enough to bully it. Two standard cory cautions apply: the fin spines can jab a hand and snag in a net (a cup is safer), and a badly stressed cory can release skin toxins that, in the confined volume of a transport bag, can kill the whole group, so move them with care.
Conservation
Unusually for a cory in the trade, Corydoras concolor is not a 'Least Concern' afterthought: the IUCN assessed it as Near Threatened (assessment dated 2019, under criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii)). The listing reflects its small geographic range in the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela and a continuing decline in habitat quality there. Restricted-range species like this one are inherently more vulnerable to localized pressures — habitat degradation, deforestation, mining and pollution within a single drainage can affect a large share of the whole population at once — which is exactly the concern the Near Threatened status captures. Aquarium demand is met substantially by captive breeding, which relieves some collection pressure, but the security of the species ultimately rests on the condition of its limited wild range. It is a useful reminder that not every familiar aquarium cory is ecologically bulletproof.
