Geophagus brokopondo is a small, sand-sifting eartheater described from a man-made lake — the Brokopondo Reservoir, the great flooded basin behind Suriname's Afobaka Dam. One of the more obscure members of the redstriped-eartheater (Geophagus surinamensis) assemblage of the Guianas, it is a benthic invertebrate-sifter and, like its close relatives, a delayed larvophilous mouthbrooder that gathers its developing young into the mouth for safekeeping. It remains poorly known in the wild and almost absent from the aquarium trade, a quiet endemic of the dark, tea-stained waters of the central Suriname River drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus brokopondo was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander together with the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen in 1989, in their monograph 'The Cichlids of Surinam' (E. J. Brill, Leiden) — the standard modern revision of the country's cichlid fauna and the work that put the Guianan Geophagus on a firm footing. The species name is taken directly from its type locality, the Brokopondomeer (Brokopondo Reservoir), and is treated as a noun in apposition. The same work described G. brokopondo alongside a second new Surinamese species, Geophagus brachybranchus from the Nickerie drainage in the west of the country, and simultaneously erected the new genus Guianacara (with subgenera Guianacara and Oelemaria) for three further new species — a single monograph that reshaped the whole Surinamese cichlid fauna at once. Kullander and Nijssen's other major contribution in that book was showing, on ethological as well as morphological grounds, that the region's two juruparoid eartheaters were not one species as long assumed: Satanoperca jurupari is a maternal ovophilous mouthbrooder that takes eggs into the mouth immediately, while Satanoperca leucosticta is a biparental larvophilous mouthbrooder that waits until the eggs have hatched — a distinction that illustrates how, in this group, brood-care behaviour can be as diagnostic of species identity as any external character, brokopondo included.

Geophagus brokopondo belongs to Geophagus in the strict sense (Geophagus sensu stricto, the surinamensis group), the clade of true eartheaters anchored on the type species Geophagus altifrons / surinamensis and characterised by a particular arrangement of the supraneural and a distinctive caudal-fin lobe pattern. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Geophagus brokopondo Kullander & Nijssen 1989, and FishBase, GBIF and the Catalogue of Life follow suit; there is no competing synonymy. Within the surinamensis assemblage it sits alongside the other Suriname-drainage eartheaters Geophagus surinamensis and Geophagus harreri (also described by Gosse from the Maroni system), from which it was separated on meristic and colour-pattern grounds. Weidner notes a further complication for anyone trying to identify these fish from older records: aquarium reports from as far back as the 1970s described some Guianan-type Geophagus as larvophilous or delayed-ovophilous mouthbrooders and assumed the fish involved came from the Guianas, Colombia or Venezuela — but it cannot be ruled out that some of those early observations were actually of Brazilian stock now recognised, on external characters, as G. surinamensis, G. brachybranchus or G. brokopondo.

Morphology

This is a small eartheater. FishBase gives a maximum of about 5 in standard length, matching the largest of Kullander & Nijssen's 37 paratypes at 5 in SL — roughly 6.5 in total length — making brokopondo one of the more compact members of a genus whose better-known species (Geophagus altifrons, Geophagus surinamensis) reach roughly twice that. The body is the typical Geophagus shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with the steep forehead and the small, low, protrusible mouth set well under a rounded snout that the whole genus uses to mine the substrate. The upper head profile runs in an almost straight line up to the origin of the dorsal fin, then starts to descend again from around the ninth dorsal spine. Ground colour in the surinamensis group is a pale silvery to olive-tan flank crossed by faint vertical bars and a dark mid-lateral blotch; the species of this assemblage typically carry rows of pearly or bluish spots on the flanks and iridescent streaking on the cheek and operculum, and the unpaired fins are marked with light spotting and streaking. Weidner is candid that brokopondo offers few field marks a keeper could use with confidence: it is, in his words, a typical representative of the genus with no standout external characteristics. What he does flag are a large lateral spot positioned on the fourth vertical bar (as in Geophagus surinamensis) and no opercular spot, plus a caudal fin marked with numerous whitish spots arranged in vertical rows — a pattern that, combined with counts of scales and fin rays and the shape of the lateral blotch, is what Kullander & Nijssen actually used to separate it from its neighbours, rather than any single dramatic feature. The vertical-row caudal pattern also distinguishes it from Geophagus megasema, whose tail instead carries a horizontal stripe. As in most Geophagus, sexual dimorphism is slight: mature males tend to grow somewhat larger and develop marginally longer dorsal- and anal-fin filaments, but the sexes are not reliably told apart outside breeding condition.

Habitat

Geophagus brokopondo is endemic to the Suriname River drainage in the interior of Suriname, and its type locality is the northern shore of the Brokopondomeer (Brokopondo Reservoir / Professor Dr. Ir. W. J. van Blommestein Meer) near Afobaka, the large reservoir created between 1960 and 1964 when the Afobaka Dam flooded the upper Suriname River. The paratype series and additional records extend it into the river system around and above the reservoir, including the Brownsweg / Brownscreek area between the Saramacca and Suriname systems.

The fullest published account of the type habitat, from Weidner's monograph (relaying the collector Stalsberg's field notes), describes the Afobaka shore zone as rocky, with fallen tree trunks extending into the water and sometimes protruding above the surface — the still-visible remains of the forest the reservoir drowned. Stalsberg observed a substantial number of fishes in this shore zone, including characins, Geophagus and Guianacara, but all were notably timid, with a flight distance too great to work with a hand net; large drag nets, for their part, repeatedly snagged on the submerged deadwood. In the end only two Geophagus brokopondo were taken, and only with a cast net — a small, telling detail about how wary and how awkward to sample this population is at its type locality. More broadly this is blackwater and clearwater country: the central Guianan rivers run tea-stained and acidic over sand and leaf litter, draining the forested Precambrian shield. The species is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of warm, soft, acidic lowland waters, working sand- and mud-bottomed channels and the quieter margins — the same micro-habitat its congener Geophagus surinamensis occupies in the same drainage, where eartheaters are often taken in the slack water near cascades. No specific published temperature or pH envelope exists for brokopondo itself, but the general Guianan-lowland regime — warm (roughly 75–86 °F), soft, and acidic to near-neutral — applies to the assemblage as a whole.

Feeding

Like every member of its genus, Geophagus brokopondo is a substrate-sifter — the feeding mode the name Geophagus ('earth-eater') broadcasts. The fish takes mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, processes them over the gill rakers to separate edible invertebrates, detritus and organic particles from the inorganic grit, and expels the cleaned substrate through the mouth and gill openings. The diet of the Guianan eartheaters is dominated by benthic invertebrates — chironomid and other insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — together with seeds, plant fragments and a large fraction of detritus and sediment, placing them low on the food web as invertivore-detritivores rather than predators. The down-turned, protrusible mouth and the long, closely set gill rakers are the morphological signature of this winnowing habit. There is no diet study specific to brokopondo, but there is no reason to expect it departs from the well-documented sand-sifting ecology of the genus.

Mating

The eartheaters of the Geophagus surinamensis group, to which brokopondo belongs, are biparental delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooders, and the reproductive biology of the species is inferred from this well-studied assemblage rather than from direct observation of brokopondo in the wild. Pairs form within a loose social group; a bonded male and female select and clean a flat surface — a stone or firm patch of substrate — over which the eggs are laid in the open, in the manner of a substrate spawner. For the first day or two the pair guards the eggs externally. The distinctive twist comes after hatching: rather than leaving the larvae on the substrate, the parents take the wrigglers (and later the free-swimming fry) into the mouth, brooding and sheltering them buccally and releasing them to forage before re-collecting them at any sign of danger. This 'delayed mouthbrooding' is shared across the surinamensis group and distinguishes them from the immediate, maternal ovophilous mouthbrooders of the related Andean genus Geophagus steindachneri-group.

Breeding

No captive or field breeding account exists specifically for Geophagus brokopondo, which has scarcely entered aquarium culture; what follows is the genus-typical pattern documented in detail for its close relatives such as Geophagus surinamensis and Geophagus altifrons. The pair spawns a modest clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned open surface and guards them biparentally. Once the eggs hatch, the parents gather the larvae into the mouth; the young are buccally incubated through the yolk-sac stage and continue to be taken back into the parents' mouths for shelter for some time after they become free-swimming, the parents alternating brooding duty. Broods in the surinamensis group are not large by cichlid standards — on the order of a hundred or a few hundred eggs — a fecundity trade-off that comes with the heavy parental investment of mouthbrooding. Whether brokopondo's small adult size translates to correspondingly smaller broods is unrecorded. As with the rest of the group, parental care is extended well past the point where most open substrate-spawners would have released their fry to fend for themselves.

In the aquarium

Geophagus brokopondo is essentially an absentee from the hobby. It is rarely, if ever, exported, and the eartheaters sold under Suriname-river names in the trade are almost always Geophagus surinamensis, Geophagus altifrons or one of the better-known 'redhead' and 'Tapajós' forms rather than this small reservoir endemic. As a result there is no established body of aquarist breeding reports for the species, and a keeper who genuinely obtained it would be working largely from the husbandry of its better-known congeners.

That husbandry is well understood for the surinamensis group, and would apply directly. The non-negotiable requirement is a deep bed of fine, soft sand: these are obligate sand-sifters, and gravel both prevents the natural feeding behaviour and risks injuring the gills. Eartheaters are gregarious and generally peaceful for their size, doing best kept as a small group in a spacious, long tank with open sand, scattered driftwood and smooth stones, and gentle current. Water should mirror the soft, warm, acidic-to-neutral blackwater the genus comes from — temperature around 79–86 °F, low hardness, pH on the acidic side of neutral — with the strong filtration and regular water changes any constant sand-stirrer demands. They are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and to the bacterial and protozoan complaints (notably 'hole-in-the-head') that plague stressed or poorly fed eartheaters, so stable, clean conditions matter. Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) taken off the bottom suits the natural invertivore-detritivore diet. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly sized soft-water species; nothing about the genus suggests this small endemic would be an exception to the usual placid eartheater temperament.

Conservation

Geophagus brokopondo was assessed for the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessment dated 27 December 2020). Although its known range is small and centred on a single drainage, the species occurs through the Suriname River system above and around the Brokopondo Reservoir, a large body of water in a sparsely populated and heavily forested interior, and no specific population-level threat has been documented. The interior of Suriname is, however, subject to growing pressures — small-scale and artisanal gold mining with its attendant mercury contamination and increased sediment loads, and the long-standing ecological alteration of the river by the Afobaka Dam itself, which converted a stretch of flowing river into a stratified reservoir. None of these is currently identified as driving a decline in this particular fish, but they are the backdrop against which the status of any central-Suriname endemic should be read. The species carries no CITES listing and has no commercial-fishery or significant ornamental value.
