Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906, in his paper 'Descriptions of new fishes discovered by Mr. E. Degen in Lake Victoria' (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 7, volume 17, pages 433–452). Boulenger did not place it in Haplochromis at all: he erected a brand-new monotypic genus for it, Platytaeniodus, of which degeni is the type and only species. He diagnosed Platytaeniodus by its dentition — 'jaws with very broad bands of small conical teeth, the alveolar surface of the praemaxillaries widening towards the pharynx, the band of teeth in the upper jaw horseshoe-shaped … a very small part of the maxilla exposed when the mouth is closed,' with 15 dorsal spines and 3 anal spines. The fish belongs to the great Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation within subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, and most modern checklists and databases (FishBase, Catalog of Fishes, WoRMS) file it under the broad, deliberately conservative genus Haplochromis while retaining Platytaeniodus degeni as the original combination and a recognized synonym; the heading used here follows that convention. A second name, Astatotilapia jeanneli Pellegrin, was placed in the synonymy of this species by Greenwood in 1956. On the strength of detailed anatomical study, Greenwood concluded that Platytaeniodus — like the related oral-crushing molluscivores Hoplotilapia and Macropleurodus — is not closely allied to any typical Haplochromis, which is why the monotypic genus has never entirely disappeared from the literature. The eponym honours Edward J. E. Degen (1852–1922), the Swiss-born ornithologist and naturalist whose collecting in Lake Victoria furnished Boulenger with the material for this and many other new haplochromines.
Morphology
Haplochromis degeni is a small to medium haplochromine, reaching about 6 in in standard length according to FishBase — toward the larger end for the flock, though most individuals are considerably smaller. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed shape typical of the lake's bottom-feeding haplochromines. Its single most distinctive feature is its dentition: the jaws bear very broad bands of small, closely packed conical teeth, the band in the upper jaw forming a horseshoe, and the pharyngeal (throat) jaws are enlarged and carry molariform — millstone-like — teeth. This is the crushing apparatus of a mollusc-eater, and it places degeni morphologically alongside Hoplotilapia retrodens and Macropleurodus bicolor in the lake's oral-shelling/crushing molluscivore guild. As in nearly all haplochromines, the males in breeding dress are the more colourful sex and the anal fin bears the genus's hallmark 'egg-dummy' ocelli — yellow-to-orange spots that play a role in spawning — while females and non-breeding fish are plainer and more cryptically marked. Detailed published colour descriptions for this particular species are sparse; much of what is reliably recorded concerns its skeleton and teeth rather than its live colours.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Lake Victoria basin, the vast, shallow, alkaline lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and is reported across the lake and adjoining satellite waters. Within the lake it is essentially a shallow-water fish, probably restricted to the littoral and sublittoral zones; FishBase records a depth range extending to about 49 ft. It shows a clear substrate preference — far more specimens are taken over sand and shingle than over mud — consistent with a fish that works firmer bottoms for buried food. Lake Victoria is warm and well-buffered: surface temperatures generally run from the low to upper twenties Celsius (FishBase cites roughly 75–79 °F for this species), and the lake water is alkaline, with pH typically in the range of about 7.2 up to 9.0 and moderate conductivity. Since the mid-twentieth century the lake has changed dramatically — eutrophication, falling water clarity and the spread of deep-water hypoxia have reshaped where its cichlids can live — so the modern distribution of a shallow sand-dweller like degeni reflects a habitat very different from the clear, well-oxygenated lake Boulenger's collectors knew.
Feeding
Here the fish presents a genuine puzzle. Its broad tooth-bands and molariform pharyngeal jaws are the classic equipment of an oral or pharyngeal mollusc-crusher, and on morphology alone Witte and van Oijen's 1990 survey grouped it with the lake's shelling molluscivores. Yet its actual gut contents tell a different story: examined specimens held sand grains or organic mud bound up with dense aggregations of mucus, with animal remains — insect larvae, water mites (Hydracarina), copepods, ostracods and pelecypod (bivalve) molluscs — occurring only sporadically. On that evidence the same authors annotated the species as 'to a major extent a detritivore,' and FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.2. The reconciliation is that degeni carries a molluscivore's crushing apparatus but in practice grazes the soft sediment, processing mouthfuls of bottom material and extracting whatever small invertebrates and organic matter it contains, the occasional crushed bivalve betraying what those millstone teeth are built for. It thus belongs ecologically to the lake's dominant detritivore community while sitting, anatomically, among the molluscivores — a mismatch that has made it a recurring example in discussions of how haplochromine form and diet can diverge.
Mating
Like the overwhelming majority of Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis degeni is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and its mating system follows the pattern that is essentially universal across the flock. Males are the courting sex: a ripe male takes up and defends a small patch of bottom, intensifies his colours, and displays to passing females, using the yellow-orange egg-dummy spots on his anal fin as a lure during spawning. There is no lasting pair bond and no paternal care — the male's contribution ends at fertilization. Species-specific accounts of degeni's courtship, territory size or breeding colours have not been published in any detail; what can be stated confidently is the guild-level behaviour, since mate choice driven by male nuptial colour is one of the central engines thought to have powered the lake's explosive cichlid radiation.
Breeding
Reproduction is by female mouthbrooding, as FishBase records for the species and as holds for the haplochromine flock generally. After the eggs are fertilized on the substrate the female takes them into her mouth — drawn to the male's anal-fin egg-dummies as she does so — and broods the developing clutch orally through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing fry that can dart back into her mouth when threatened. Clutch sizes have not been published specifically for degeni; small Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size typically carry broods on the order of a few dozen eggs, a modest fecundity offset by the high survival that intensive oral care provides. The lake's haplochromines breed more or less year-round rather than in a single season. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, consistent with a small, early-maturing mouthbrooder.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis degeni is essentially never kept as an aquarium fish. It is a scientifically interesting but visually unremarkable detritus-grazer with no established presence in the ornamental trade, and it is not bred for the hobby. The very small number of Lake Victoria haplochromines that have entered aquaria — a handful of brightly coloured 'Victorian cichlids' maintained partly as conservation-insurance populations — are far more colourful species; degeni is not among them, and reliable husbandry information for it does not exist. Anyone wishing to approximate its needs would have to reason from the lake itself: warm water around 75–79 °F, hard and alkaline chemistry with a pH well above neutral (roughly 7.5–8.5), a firm sand-and-fine-gravel bottom rather than mud, and the maternal-mouthbrooder social structure of one male to several females in a group large enough to diffuse male aggression. As with all Lake Victoria haplochromines, hybridisation is a serious risk: the flock's species are weakly reproductively isolated and will cross readily in captivity, so any serious maintenance would demand single-species tanks. In practice, this is a fish for the museum drawer and the research collection, not the living room.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis degeni as Least Concern (assessment by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks, carried out in 2010 and published in 2016), with the population trend recorded as increasing and the range spanning the three Lake Victoria riparian states — Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It carries no CITES listing. That comparatively reassuring status sits against one of the most-studied ecological disasters in freshwater conservation. The introduction of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), which became established in Lake Victoria from the 1950s onward, combined with intensifying eutrophication, declining water clarity and the spread of deep-water hypoxia, contributed to the collapse or outright extinction of a large fraction of the lake's endemic haplochromine flock from the 1980s on — by many estimates well over a hundred species. Detritivores and zooplanktivores of the open sublittoral were among the hardest hit, and degeni's morphological relatives in the mollusc-crushing guild suffered badly. That degeni is currently judged Least Concern and even increasing reflects a partial, uneven recovery of some haplochromine groups as the Nile-perch fishery matured and predation pressure eased, rather than any security from the underlying pressures, which remain very much in force across the basin.
