Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis quasimodo is a fish-eating cichlid endemic to the Lake Edward system on the Uganda–DR Congo border, one of ten new piscivorous haplochromines that Belgian ichthyologists peeled apart from a complex long mistaken for just one or two species. It was described only in 2022 and is known almost entirely from preserved and freshly collected museum material; its biology in life remains largely undocumented. The IUCN has not evaluated it.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis quasimodo was described in 2022 by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge, Annelies Heylen, Eva Decru and Jos Snoeks in their European Journal of Taxonomy monograph 'From a pair to a dozen: the piscivorous species of Haplochromis (Cichlidae) from the Lake Edward system.' The holotype (MRAC 2018.008.P.0336), a male, was taken in the Ugandan waters of Lake Edward at roughly 0°21′32″S, 29°43′18″E in open water about 98 ft deep; paratypes are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels). The paper's central finding is that what earlier workers treated as one or two fish-eating cichlids in Lake Edward is in fact a dozen distinct species: the authors redescribed the two long-recognized forms (Haplochromis squamipinnis and Haplochromis mentatus) and described ten new ones alongside them, of which quasimodo is one. They sorted the twelve into two ecomorphological groups — 'macrodontic' piscivores with fewer, larger teeth and 'microdontic' piscivores with many small teeth — a split they suspect maps onto differences in hunting style and prey. Like most members of the East African haplochromine flocks, the species is placed in the catch-all genus Haplochromis; the older literature scattered Lake Edward predators among genera such as Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis, and the generic assignment of these fishes remains provisional pending a genomic revision the describers have flagged as future work. The species is endemic to the Lake Edward system, which comprises Lakes Edward and George and their connecting Kazinga Channel.

Morphology

This is a moderately large haplochromine, reaching about 6.5 in standard length in the type series. The body is comparatively deep and, in large individuals, rhomboid in outline — body depth runs 33.5–41.7% of standard length — set against a rather low, shallow head; it is precisely this contrast between the modest head and the bulky, angular body of big fish that earned the species its name (see the naming section). The head is broad (head width 42.0–48.1% of head length) with a narrow interorbital area (40.5–48.7% of head length) and a gently sloping snout inclined about 30–40°. The mouth carries many small outer teeth — 46 to 71 in the upper jaw, placing the species among the 'microdontic' piscivores rather than the large-fanged 'macrodontic' ones — and the meristics run to 15–17 dorsal spines, 9–11 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines, 8–10 anal soft rays and 29–31 vertebrae. A well-defined mid-lateral band is present, a feature that separates quasimodo from several of its sympatric relatives. As in haplochromines generally the sexes differ in colour: dominant (territorial) males are light grey on the back and blue-black below, the condition the describers used to tell the species apart from its look-alikes, while females and non-dominant fish are plainer. Small specimens under about 3.5 in closely resemble Haplochromis schubotziellus in overall look. Because museum specimens lose their colour, the team had to collect and photograph fresh fish to document these patterns — colour in life being, for this flock, often the clearest species marker.

Habitat

Haplochromis quasimodo is endemic to the Lake Edward system, shared by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and lying between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Virunga National Park; the Catalog of Fishes records it from both Lake Edward and Lake George. It is an offshore, bottom-associated fish recorded from both shallow and deep water, with the holotype taken in open water about 98 ft deep. Lake Edward is the smallest of the African Great Lakes and is markedly alkaline: long-standing limnological work (Talling & Talling; Hecky & others) gives surface conductivity around 900 µS/cm, a pH near 9, and water chemistry dominated by sodium, potassium, magnesium and bicarbonate. Surface temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 20s °C, broadly 73–81 °F through the year in this equatorial setting. These are hard, well-buffered, comparatively warm waters — a very different chemical world from the soft, acidic habitats of many other African cichlids, and closer to the conditions of nearby Lake Victoria and the other rift lakes.

Feeding

Haplochromis quasimodo belongs to the piscivorous (fish-eating) guild of the Lake Edward flock — the whole point of the monograph that described it was to dissect that guild. No direct gut-content study of this species has been published; the trophic assignment rests on its morphology, which FishBase summarizes as 'most probably a piscivorous species.' Within the predatory group it falls on the microdontic side, with many small outer teeth rather than a few large fangs. The describers suggest this macrodontic-versus-microdontic divide reflects real ecological differences — in where the fish hunt, how they catch prey, and the size and kind of prey they take — so quasimodo most likely takes smaller or differently handled prey than its large-toothed neighbours. Its estimated trophic level (FishBase, modelled) is about 3.5, consistent with a mid-to-upper predator in the lake's food web. In a system whose pelagic and benthic small-fish biomass is dominated by other haplochromines, a fish-eater of this size is preying chiefly on other cichlids.

Mating

Nothing has been published on the courtship or social behaviour of Haplochromis quasimodo specifically; it has never, as far as the literature records, been observed spawning in the wild or kept in aquaria. What can be said rests on the wider biology of the haplochromine cichlids of the East African lakes, to which this species belongs. In that group males are the showy sex and hold the breeding initiative: dominant males develop bright nuptial colours — here a light-grey back over a blue-black belly — and court females with displays, often over a chosen patch of substrate, while subordinate males and females stay drab. Colour difference between dominant males was, in fact, the single most useful character the describers used to separate the twelve Lake Edward predators, underscoring how central male nuptial signalling is to reproductive isolation in this flock. Beyond that general picture, the specifics of pair formation, territoriality and spawning site for quasimodo are simply unknown.

Breeding

No breeding observations exist for Haplochromis quasimodo; its reproduction is inferred entirely from the well-documented habits of the haplochromine flocks of Lakes Victoria, Edward and the neighbouring rift lakes, which are uniformly maternal mouthbrooders. In these fishes the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth — frequently aided by egg-spot lures on the male's anal fin during a circling spawning 'dance' — and broods the developing clutch in her buccal cavity for roughly two to three weeks, releasing fully-formed free-swimming fry and offering them mouth refuge for a short period afterward. Clutches in haplochromines of this size are modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs, the trade-off for the heavy investment of oral incubation; precise fecundity for quasimodo has not been measured. Parental care is by the female alone, with no male involvement after spawning. All of this should be read as genus-typical expectation, not as anything recorded for this particular species.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis quasimodo is essentially not an aquarium fish. It was described in 2022 from museum and field-collected material and has no presence in the hobby or the ornamental trade — there is no body of keeping experience to draw on, and the species is most realistically thought of as a wild scientific specimen rather than a tank subject. Anyone who did encounter it would be keeping a roughly 6.5 in, fish-eating rift-lake cichlid from hard, alkaline water: that implies a large tank (well over a metre long), hard water buffered to a high pH (Lake Edward runs near pH 9 at high conductivity), warm temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C, and a diet built around meaty foods, with the firm caveat that a piscivore of this size will treat smaller tankmates as prey. None of that is husbandry advice grounded in real experience with this species, because none exists; it is extrapolation from the lake and from related haplochromines. The honest summary is that quasimodo is a fish of interest to ichthyologists and conservationists, not to aquarists.

Conservation

Haplochromis quasimodo has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (a live search of the Red List returns no assessment; FishBase likewise lists it as Not Evaluated), which is unsurprising for a species formalized only in 2022. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. Any read on its status is therefore indirect. The Lake Edward system is comparatively lightly studied and, for much of the twentieth century, was poorly sampled because instability on the Congolese side limited fieldwork; the describers estimate the lake holds on the order of 80 cichlid species, a richness only now being properly catalogued. The broad pressures on the system are the familiar ones for the African Great Lakes — fishing pressure, catchment degradation and pollution flagged in recent water-quality surveys of the basin, and the cautionary precedent of nearby Lake Victoria, where introduced Nile perch and other changes drove a mass extinction of endemic haplochromines. Because quasimodo was, until 2022, hidden inside a species complex thought to contain only one or two fish, the deeper lesson the authors draw is that the lake's true diversity — and thus what is genuinely at stake there — has been substantially underestimated.
