Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis latifrons is a slender, big-toothed predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Edward on the Uganda–DR Congo border, one of a dozen piscivorous haplochromines that Vranken and colleagues sorted out in 2022. Its name — 'broad forehead' — captures the single feature that sets it apart from its closest look-alikes: an unusually wide, flat space between the eyes on an otherwise narrow, fish-hunting head. It is unassessed by the IUCN and unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis latifrons was described in 2022 by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge, Annelies Heylen, Eva Decru and Jos Snoeks in the European Journal of Taxonomy, in a 94-page monograph pointedly titled 'From a pair to a dozen: the piscivorous species of Haplochromis (Cichlidae) from the Lake Edward system.' Before that work only two fish-eating Haplochromis were formally recognised from Lakes Edward and George — Haplochromis squamipinnis and Haplochromis mentatus; the authors redescribed both and added ten new species, Haplochromis latifrons among them. The holotype (MRAC 2018.008.P.0330, held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium) was bought at the Rwenshama landing site on the Ugandan shore of Lake Edward, at roughly 0°24′S, 29°46′E, with paratypes from the same museum. The species sits in the East African haplochromine flock, the explosively diversified group that fills the Lake Victoria–Edward–Kivu region with several hundred closely related cichlids. 'Haplochromis' is used here in the broad, traditional sense; within the finer generic schemes proposed by Greenwood, the piscivores of this build are referred to Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis, and the describing authors list both as keywords. Those splits remain contentious and are not consistently applied, so the conservative combination Haplochromis latifrons is retained. There are no synonyms — the name has had a single, valid combination since its erection.

Morphology

This is a small-to-medium haplochromine reaching about 6 in in standard length (the largest measured type specimen). The body is built for pursuit: very shallow and elongate, its depth only 27.2–30.1% of standard length, giving the streamlined profile typical of open-water predators. The defining trait is in the skull — the interorbital area (the bony bridge between the eyes) is flat and conspicuously broad, its width 57.4–63.3% of head width, against 39.3–57.1% in most other Lake Edward piscivores; this 'broad forehead' is what the epithet latifrons records. The mouth carries few but large outer teeth (24–42 in the upper jaw), marking it as one of the 'macrodontic' (large-toothed) piscivores the authors distinguished from a 'microdontic' (small, numerous teeth) group. Fin counts are 15–16 dorsal spines with 9–10 soft rays, 3 anal spines with 7–8 soft rays, and 30 vertebrae; the anal-fin base is comparatively short (14.7–17.3% of standard length). Known coloration is described only from females and juveniles, which are green along the back, white below, and carry a well-defined dark mid-lateral band running the length of the flank. The dominant breeding-male colour pattern — usually the most vivid and diagnostic feature of a haplochromine, and the cue females use to choose mates — has never been documented for this species, a notable gap the describing authors flag explicitly.

Habitat

Haplochromis latifrons is endemic to Lake Edward, a relatively small (~2,186 mi²) but deep rift lake straddling the Uganda–DR Congo frontier in the Albertine Rift, connected via the Kazinga Channel to shallow Lake George; the two together with their satellite waters form the Lake Edward system. FishBase classes the species as pelagic — a fish of the open water column rather than the rocky or sandy littoral — consistent with its streamlined, predatory build, though the type material was landed at a lakeshore fishing site and the precise depth band it favours has not been published. Lake Edward is a hard, alkaline, well-buffered water body: published limnology gives a conductivity near 900 µS/cm, an average pH of about 9, and an ionic chemistry dominated by sodium, potassium, magnesium and bicarbonate (Talling; Lehman 2002). It is only weakly stratified for an equatorial rift lake, with a surface-to-deep temperature gradient of roughly 34 °F and warm surface waters generally in the mid-20s°C. These are the conditions — warm, mineral-rich, distinctly alkaline — under which the whole Edward haplochromine radiation evolved.

Feeding

Everything about the species points to a predatory, fish-eating habit. The describing authors place it firmly among the piscivorous Haplochromis of Lake Edward on the basis of its morphology — the elongate body, large recurved teeth, and the general head architecture shared with confirmed fish-hunters. FishBase summarises it as 'most probably a piscivorous species' and estimates a trophic level of about 3.4, the value expected of a mid-level predator that takes other fishes. Its membership of the large-toothed ('macrodontic') group, as opposed to the small-toothed one, is interpreted by Vranken et al. as reflecting a real ecological split — differences in habitat use, hunting technique, and the size and type of prey taken — among the lake's many piscivores, which together account for an estimated 12–20% of the cichlid assemblage. No stomach-content study specific to Haplochromis latifrons has been published, so the diet is inferred from anatomy rather than observed directly; in the wider community it functions as one of numerous specialised predators partitioning the available prey fish among themselves.

Mating

No courtship, territoriality or spawning behaviour has been observed in Haplochromis latifrons. It belongs, however, to the East African haplochromine flock, whose reproductive biology is among the best-studied of any fish group and is highly stereotyped. In these cichlids the sexes live apart outside of breeding; ripe males develop bright, species-specific nuptial colours and display to females over a small court, while females remain comparatively drab. Female mate choice keyed to male colour pattern is the engine widely credited with driving the group's explosive speciation. For this species that mechanism can only be presumed: the dominant male colour pattern — the very signal on which such courtship turns — is unknown, never having been collected or photographed in breeding condition. Anything written about its mating must therefore be read as the haplochromine norm applied to a fish whose own behaviour has not been watched.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in Haplochromis latifrons, and no eggs, fry or fecundity figures exist for it. As a member of the East African haplochromine flock it is, with effectively complete confidence, a maternal mouthbrooder: across this enormous group the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry only when they can fend for themselves, with no paternal involvement after spawning. Clutches in comparably sized haplochromines are modest — typically on the order of a few dozen relatively large, yolky eggs (commonly cited ranges run from roughly 20 to 80, scaling with female size) — a trade-off of fecundity for the safety mouthbrooding affords each egg. The specific clutch size, brooding duration and breeding triggers for this species remain unrecorded; the figures given here are genus-typical values, not measurements of Haplochromis latifrons itself.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis latifrons is not an aquarium fish. It is a recently described, scientifically known species from a remote rift lake with no ornamental fishery and no presence in the hobby or the trade; there are no captive specimens, no published photographs of living fish, and no husbandry experience to draw on. The notes that follow are therefore general expectations for a predatory Lake Edward haplochromine, not a keeping guide. Were it ever maintained, it would need the hard, alkaline water of its home lake — pH on the high side, around 8 to 9, with substantial mineral hardness and warmth in the mid-20s°C — together with the long swimming lanes of an open-water predator and a generous tank. As a fish-eater it would regard any tankmate small enough to swallow as food, so companions would have to be of similar size and similarly robust, and a single-species setup or a group within a large rift-lake community would be the only sensible arrangements. For the foreseeable future the species belongs to ichthyology and conservation, not to fishkeeping; anyone seeking a comparable aquarium experience is far better served by one of the established hobby haplochromines of the Victoria region.

Conservation

Haplochromis latifrons has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (confirmed Not Evaluated on the current Red List version, 2025-2), an unsurprising status for a species described only in 2022; it likewise carries no CITES or CMS listing. Its conservation outlook is best read at the scale of its lake. Crucially, Lake Edward's haplochromine flock has not suffered the catastrophe that overtook Lake Victoria: the predatory Nile perch (Lates) that decimated Victoria's cichlids after its mid-20th-century introduction is native to the Edward–George–Albert system, so the Edward radiation evolved alongside it and remains comparatively intact, with on the order of 60–80 endemic haplochromines still recognised and new species still being described. That does not mean the lake is free of pressure — the Albertine Rift fisheries face overexploitation, shoreline disturbance, sedimentation from catchment land-use, and the longer-term uncertainties of oil exploration and a warming climate — but no threat specific to this fish has been identified. As a narrow-range single-lake endemic known from few specimens, it is inherently vulnerable to any system-wide decline, which is the chief reason its lack of a formal assessment is worth noting.
