Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis schubotzi was described by the British–Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1914, in the cichlid chapter of the zoological results of the Deutsche Zentral-Afrika-Expedition of 1907–1908 (Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Zentral-Afrika-Expedition, Zoologie, vol. 5). The type series — thirty-two specimens — came entirely from Lake Edward, recorded in the German literature of the day as the 'Albert-Eduard See'; Peter Humphry Greenwood later selected a lectotype from this material in his 1973 revision of the Lake Edward haplochromines. The species honours the German zoologist Johann G. Hermann Schubotz (1881–1955), who not only collected many of the expedition's fishes, including the type of this one, but also edited the volume in which Boulenger's description appeared.
The genus Haplochromis is a famously unsettled catch-all. Schubotzi belongs to the vast East African haplochromine radiation, the same explosive lineage that produced the species flocks of Lakes Victoria, Edward, George, and Kyoga. Greenwood's 1980 reorganisation of that radiation split many former Haplochromis into smaller, ecology-based genera, and schubotzi is among the species that have been referred to Psammochromis — the 'sand cichlids', diagnosed by a dentary whose two halves are swollen at the front. That placement is not universally accepted, and most checklists and FishBase still list the fish as Haplochromis schubotzi; collectors and the CARES conservation programme often write it as Psammochromis (Haplochromis) schubotzi to flag the ambiguity. We keep the Haplochromis heading here for stability. The species should not be confused with Haplochromis schubotziellus Greenwood 1973, a diminutive relative whose name literally records how often small specimens of it were mistaken for schubotzi.
Morphology
Haplochromis schubotzi is a modestly sized cichlid, reaching about 5 in in standard length (FishBase, from the CLOFFA checklist) — a hand-span fish rather than one of the larger predatory haplochromines of the lake. It has the generalised haplochromine build: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a single continuous dorsal fin, and the egg-spot ('ocelli') markings on the anal fin typical of the lineage. Live colour is known mainly from aquarium specimens of Lake Edward fish, in which mature males show the bright nuptial palette characteristic of the group, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer silvery to brassy grey. As is the rule among mouthbrooding haplochromines, the sexes differ markedly once males come into condition: dominant males develop intense breeding colour and anal-fin egg-spots used in spawning, whereas females stay cryptically coloured. The forward-swollen lower jaw that defines Psammochromis is the feature on which the species' alternative generic placement rests. Beyond size, jaw form, and the broad strokes of dimorphism, detailed morphometric data for this particular species remain thin — it has never received the monographic attention lavished on the Lake Victoria flock.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Lake Edward system: Lake Edward itself, the smaller but highly productive Lake George to its northeast, and the Kazinga Channel that links them, spanning the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. FishBase records it from offshore areas over both sand and mud bottoms, where it may occur at exposed or relatively sheltered localities — a soft-substrate, open-water fish rather than a rock-dweller. Lake Edward is the smallest of the African Great Lakes (surface area about 2,202 mi², maximum depth around 367 ft, mean depth only about 56 ft), and its cichlid fauna of roughly sixty species is some 92 percent endemic, making this one of the planet's least-known cichlid radiations. The waters are warm, productive, and decidedly alkaline: shallow, intensely productive Lake George has been measured at pH 9.3–9.9, and the Edward–George basin generally runs hard and well-buffered in the rift-valley manner, far from the soft acidic conditions of a blackwater stream. These are equatorial waters, with surface temperatures typically in the mid-to-high 20s °C. Exact depth preferences for schubotzi have not been published in detail, but its description as an offshore sand-and-mud fish places it across the lakes' shallow shelf rather than in the deepwater pelagic zone occupied by some of its relatives.
Feeding
The trophic biology of Haplochromis schubotzi is only lightly documented. Examination of the gut contents of a few specimens led to the tentative conclusion that it is insectivorous, though the original workers cautioned that the extent of its dependence on insect prey needed confirmation; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small invertebrate-feeder rather than a fish-eater. Its offshore life over sand and mud, combined with the forward-inflated lower jaw that aligns it with the sand-sifting genus Psammochromis, points to a fish that works the soft bottom — taking insect larvae, other benthic invertebrates, and associated organic material from the sediment. Aquarists who have kept wild and captive-bred Lake Edward stock describe it explicitly as a sand-sifting cichlid, which fits both the morphology and the habitat. In a flock where one in five or six species has evolved overt piscivory, schubotzi sits lower on the food web as a benthic invertivore of the lakes' open floors.
Mating
No detailed field study of courtship in this species has been published, so its mating behaviour is read from the well-understood biology of the East African haplochromine radiation to which it belongs. In these cichlids reproduction is polygynous and lek-like: ripe males establish and defend small territories, intensify into their breeding colours, and display to passing females, while the comparatively drab females move among them and choose mates. The anal-fin egg-spots that males flash during courtship are central to spawning — the female, having taken her eggs into her mouth, snaps at the spots on the male's fin and so draws in his milt to fertilise the clutch she is already carrying. Pair bonds are momentary; the male contributes nothing beyond fertilisation, and the female alone takes on the entire burden of parental care. Aquarium keepers report that the species does best maintained as a group, with the dimorphism and male display intensifying as fish come into condition.
Breeding
Haplochromis schubotzi is a maternal mouthbrooder, as FishBase records and as is the universal pattern for this branch of the haplochromine radiation. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through development, then continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her buccal cavity for a period after hatching, releasing them to forage and snapping them back in at any sign of danger. The male provides no care. Species-specific figures for clutch size, brooding duration, and fry size have not been published for schubotzi; among comparable small Lake Edward and Lake Victoria haplochromines, brooded clutches are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen relatively large, yolky eggs — reflecting the trade-off mouthbrooders make between fecundity and the safety of carrying a small number of well-provisioned young. The strategy is highly effective at protecting offspring through the vulnerable egg and larval stages without any nest or substrate, which is part of why mouthbrooding haplochromines have radiated so explosively across these lakes.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis schubotzi is a specialist's fish, not a shop staple. It is rarely kept, and the stock that does circulate in the hobby traces largely to wild fish collected in Lake Edward in 2017 and their captive-bred descendants, maintained by a small number of dedicated rift-lake keepers and listed by the CARES Preservation Program as a species worth safeguarding in aquaria. Keepers describe it as somewhat shy and emphatically a group fish: it should be kept in a shoal rather than as isolated individuals or a lone pair, both for its own confidence and to spread the males' attention at breeding time.
Husbandry should mirror the warm, hard, alkaline water of its home lakes rather than the soft acidic setup suited to West African or South American cichlids. Aim for a temperature in the mid-20s °C and a distinctly alkaline pH — the Edward–George basin runs from roughly 8 up toward 9.5 in places — with hard, well-buffered, well-oxygenated water and good filtration. Because it is a sand-sifting, bottom-working species, a deep bed of fine sand is the single most important furnishing; it lets the fish express natural feeding behaviour and keeps the jaw and gills healthy. Open swimming space over the sand, with some structure to break sightlines, suits a group of these active haplochromines.
Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet of small frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) alongside a quality prepared food keeps condition and colour up. As with other haplochromines, avoid an excessively rich or warm-blooded-protein-heavy diet. Tankmates are best chosen from other hard-water, alkaline-loving species of similar temperament; mixing several superficially similar haplochromines risks hybridisation, so single-species or carefully separated setups are preferable for anyone hoping to keep the line pure. This is fundamentally a fish kept for conservation and for interest in the Lake Edward flock rather than for colour-trade appeal.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis schubotzi as Least Concern, assessed on 31 January 2006 by T.K. Twongo and published in 2006, with the population trend listed as unknown. The assessment records the species from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda within the Lake Edward–George system and notes industrial and military pollution among the pressures on its habitat. No CITES listing applies. The Least Concern rating reflects the species' occurrence across a connected lake-and-channel system rather than any demonstrated abundance — like much of the Edward flock, it is simply under-studied, and the 'unknown' population trend is an honest signal of that data gap.
The wider Lake Edward basin faces real and accelerating pressures. It is among the least-researched of the African Great Lakes, ringed by a fast-growing riparian population with poor sanitation, and its fisheries are reported to be declining under fishing pressure. Wetland drainage and deforestation degrade shoreline habitat, oil exploration in the Albertine Rift raises the threat of pollution, and climate change compounds all of these. Against a cichlid fauna that is more than 90 percent endemic, these basin-wide stresses are the backdrop against which the long-term security of a little-known sand-dweller like schubotzi should be read — which is precisely why it has been taken up as a CARES conservation species in the hobby.
