Haplochromis mahagiensis is a small haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Albert on the Uganda–DR Congo border, named for the port of Mahagi where the type series was caught. Like the rest of its East-African flock it is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable on the basis of its single, increasingly pressured lake.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis mahagiensis was described in 1937 by Louis David and Max Poll in the Annales du Musée du Congo Belge, in their contribution to the ichthyofauna of the Belgian Congo based on the collections of Dr H. Schouteden and others (David & Poll 1937: 251, fig. 27). The type series came from Mahagi (now Mahagi Port), on the Congolese shore of Lake Albert; the holotype (MRAC 21004) and more than seventy paratypes are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. The following year Ethelwynn Trewavas treated it in her revision of the Lake Albert species of Haplochromis (Trewavas 1938), the foundational study of that lake's haplochromine fauna, and it was later listed by Poll & Damas (1939) and Copley (1958).

The genus placement has shifted with the long-running effort to break the catch-all genus Haplochromis into natural units. In his 1979 phyletic classification, Peter Humphry Greenwood transferred the species to Thoracochromis (Greenwood 1979: 293), a genus he erected for certain riverine and Nilotic-affinity haplochromines, and Lévêque et al. (1991) followed that combination. The CLOFFA checklist treatment by van Oijen et al. (1991), however, retained it in Haplochromis, and that is the name carried as current by both FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The atlas keeps the Haplochromis heading while noting that Thoracochromis mahagiensis is a widely used senior-synonym combination; the underlying question of how the Lake Albert flock relates to the Victoria–Edward super-flock and to the Nilotic haplochromines remains unsettled.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 3.5 in total length, and the CLOFFA/Faunafri databases cite the same 3.5 in figure, consistent with the modest size of the type material. In overall build it is a typical lacustrine haplochromine — a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a single continuous dorsal fin, and the three-row arrangement of pharyngeal and oral dentition that defines the group. No colour photographs of living wild fish are in circulation, and the original 1937 account and Trewavas's 1938 redescription are the primary morphological sources; detailed live coloration is not well documented. As in essentially all haplochromines, sexual dimorphism is expected to follow the flock pattern: territorial, breeding males develop the brighter nuptial colours and typically carry yellow or orange egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin used in the mouthbrooding spawning ritual, while females and non-breeding fish are plainer and more cryptically marked. Because species-specific dimorphism has not been published for this fish, the atlas reports it as present but follows the genus-typical condition rather than a measured description.

Habitat

Haplochromis mahagiensis is endemic to Lake Albert (Lake Albert Nyanza), the northernmost of the Albertine Rift lakes, straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. FishBase places it between about 1°N and 3°S and classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species; the IUCN restricts the confirmed range to the single lake and its immediate waters. Lake Albert is a relatively shallow, well-mixed rift lake (mean depth around 82 ft, maximum near 190 ft) and, unlike the deep, strongly stratified waters of Tanganyika, it lacks a large permanently anoxic deep zone, so its haplochromines occupy nearshore and sublittoral bottoms rather than great depth. Published limnology for the lake describes warm, near-neutral to alkaline, moderately mineralised water — surface temperatures generally in the mid-20s to high-20s °C and pH measured around 7.2 and ranging up toward 9 in productive nearshore areas. No depth band has been published specifically for this species, but as a small benthopelagic haplochromine of a shallow lake it is best placed in the shoreline-to-sublittoral zone (roughly 0–98 ft); the exact figure is undocumented.

Feeding

No gut-content or feeding study has been published for Haplochromis mahagiensis specifically. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3, which places it as a small generalist carnivore/invertivore — the modal feeding mode in lacustrine haplochromine flocks, where the great majority of species take aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and other benthic invertebrates. The Lake Albert flock that Trewavas (1938) and later workers documented spans the usual haplochromine trophic range (insectivores, molluscivores, zooplanktivores and a few piscivores), and a fish of this small size is most plausibly an invertebrate-feeder working the nearshore bottom. In the absence of a dedicated study the diet here is reported as a genus-typical inference rather than a measured fact.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship in this species have not been published, but its reproductive biology can be read from the flock to which it belongs. East-African haplochromines are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders that do not form lasting pairs: a male establishes and defends a small spawning territory, displays his nuptial colours and anal-fin egg-spots to passing females, and spawns serially with any ripe female he can attract. FishBase records the species simply as practising 'mouthbrooding by females,' consistent with this pattern. Females are not territorial and, once they have taken up the eggs, carry the entire parental burden alone.

Breeding

Haplochromis mahagiensis is a maternal (ovophile) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records and as is universal in its flock. No clutch count has been published for the species itself; in haplochromines of this small body size, broods are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60 in comparable small flock members) — so any figure given here is a genus-typical estimate, not a measured one. The spawning sequence follows the classic haplochromine ritual: the female lays a few eggs at a time and immediately takes them into her mouth, then nips at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin, prompting him to release milt that fertilises the eggs already in her buccal cavity. She then broods the developing embryos in her mouth for roughly two to three weeks, not feeding, and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry there for a time after they hatch, releasing them to forage and recalling them at the first sign of danger. Parental care is entirely by the female; the male contributes nothing after spawning. Specific incubation times, fry sizes and breeding triggers for this species are undocumented.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis mahagiensis is essentially never seen in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, plain, single-lake endemic with no ornamental trade, no established line in captivity, and no published aquarium account — unlike the colourful Lake Victoria 'Haps' that hobbyist conservation groups maintain, the Lake Albert species are effectively unknown to keepers. Nothing here should be read as a husbandry recommendation, because the fish is not kept.

Were it ever maintained, its needs would mirror those of other small lacustrine haplochromines from hard, alkaline rift water: a tank of modest footprint by cichlid standards (a single male with several females in something on the order of a 47 in / ~65 US gal aquarium), warm water around 75–82 °F, a pH held firmly on the alkaline side (about 7.5–8.5) with moderate to high hardness, and a sand bottom with rock and open swimming space. The standard haplochromine social structure — one male to a harem of females, with enough females and broken sightlines to spread his aggression — would apply, as would the usual caution against hybridisation with any other haplochromine in the tank. All of this is extrapolation from related fish, not experience with this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis mahagiensis as Vulnerable (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed on 23 August 2021 and published in 2022 by V. Natugonza and L. Musinguzi, with the population trend listed as unknown. The Vulnerable listing reflects the species' confinement to a single lake basin (Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) combined with a declining quality of habitat: the assessors flag habitat degradation from catchment activities and the prospect of pollution from oil and gas development in the Albertine graben, where commercial petroleum reserves underlie and surround Lake Albert. The wider context is the well-documented vulnerability of the East-African great-lake haplochromine flocks, whose Lake Victoria relatives suffered catastrophic, partly extinction-level declines following the Nile perch boom, eutrophication and intensified fishing. Lake Albert already holds a long-established Nile perch population (it is one of the perch's native lakes) and supports a heavy artisanal fishery, so its endemic haplochromines face a similar suite of pressures — overfishing, nutrient loading and now hydrocarbon development — against which a small, single-lake species like this one has little buffer.
