Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis mentatus is a small, slender, fish-eating cichlid endemic to the Lake Edward system on the Uganda-DR Congo border, one of the lesser-known of Africa's haplochromine species flocks. Described by C. Tate Regan in 1925 and long passed over, it was redescribed only in 2022 as one of a dozen piscivorous Haplochromis sorted out of the Lake Edward radiation. Its specific name nods to the protruding lower jaw and chin of an ambush hunter; dominant males turn yellow-green with a red flush across the front of the flank. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern (2021).

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis mentatus was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1925, in a short paper titled 'Three new cichlid fishes of the genus Haplochromis from Lake Edward, Central Africa' (Occasional Papers of the Boston Society of Natural History 5: 187-188). The type locality is Lake Edward, on the border of present-day Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the species was named directly in the genus Haplochromis. The unique holotype (MCZ 31523) is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard. Regan did not explain the epithet, but it is almost certainly from the Latin mentum, 'chin', a reference to the projecting lower jaw he noted in the original account. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the species as valid and gives its distribution as Lakes Edward and George, the twin lakes of the Albertine (western) Rift connected by the Kazinga Channel.

For most of the twentieth century the fish was little more than a name. That changed with a 2022 monograph by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge and colleagues (European Journal of Taxonomy 815), which tackled the piscivorous Haplochromis of the Lake Edward system. Before their work only two piscivores from these lakes had been formally described, Haplochromis mentatus and Haplochromis squamipinnis; the authors redescribed both and added ten new species, bringing the piscivorous guild from 'a pair to a dozen.' They sorted these hunters into two morphological groups, the large-toothed (macrodontic) and small-toothed (microdontic) piscivores; Haplochromis mentatus, with few large outer teeth, belongs to the macrodontic group. Like the entire Lake Edward radiation, the species is a member of the haplochromine flock (subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Haplochromini). The catch-all genus Haplochromis has been progressively dismantled by Greenwood and later authors into segregate genera such as Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis (the names under which many piscivores have been placed), but for the Lake Edward fishes the conservative usage Haplochromis is retained pending a comprehensive generic revision, and that is the heading used here.

Morphology

Haplochromis mentatus is a small cichlid built for hunting: FishBase gives a maximum length of about 4.5 in total length, though some hobby and survey notes cite fish up to roughly 6.5 in. The body is shallow and elongate, its depth only about 29-32% of standard length, and the snout is very acute in both side and top views, with a steeply sloping lower jaw and a weakly protruding chin region (the feature behind the name). The fin counts run to 15-16 dorsal spines, 9-10 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8-9 anal soft rays, over 30-32 vertebrae, a relatively high vertebral count that fits its drawn-out body. The mouth carries few but large outer teeth (the macrodontic condition), with 28-46 teeth in the upper outer row.

The redescription separates Haplochromis mentatus from its many lookalikes mostly by combinations of fine proportions, the length of the dorsal-fin base and caudal peduncle, the slope of the snout and lower jaw, eye size, head width and tooth counts, rather than by any single dramatic feature. The most useful living character is the breeding dress of dominant males, which are yellow-green with a conspicuous red wash across the anterior part of the flank; this distinguishes them from close relatives that turn cream with an orange operculum (Haplochromis rex), light grey with a black head (Haplochromis aquila), uniformly blue (Haplochromis glaucus), slate blue (Haplochromis squamipinnis) or black (Haplochromis pardus). As is typical of haplochromines, females and non-dominant males are a plainer silvery-grey, and males reach the larger size.

Field surveys of the lake predating the 2022 redescription flagged Haplochromis squamipinnis as the species this fish is most easily confused with in the water, and offered a working set of field cues beyond color: mentatus runs slightly more slender-bodied than squamipinnis, carries a more horizontally angled mouth, and — the least obvious but most reliable of the three — lacks the small patch of scales at the base of the dorsal and anal fins that squamipinnis carries. One of those older surveys also described live-caught fish tentatively identified as mentatus showing a metallic golden sheen over the body and fins; that identification was offered as provisional by the observer at the time, so it is worth treating as a historical field note rather than a settled part of the species' color description alongside the redescription's yellow-green, red-flanked breeding males.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Lake Edward system, the linked basin of Lakes Edward and George in the Albertine Rift, shared by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. FishBase records it as benthopelagic and notes it from offshore areas, mostly in shallow water. Katwe Bay, on the Ugandan shore of Lake Edward, is a specifically documented collection locality for the species, alongside the type locality. It belongs to FEOW's Lake Victoria Basin freshwater ecoregion, a unit defined by the basins of Lakes Victoria, Edward, George, Kyoga and Kivu and characterised by its lacustrine cichlid faunas. Lake Edward itself is a moderately shallow rift lake (maximum depth around 361–394 ft) but biologically productive, and its haplochromine flock numbers roughly 60 cichlid species, the great majority of them endemic.

In-situ water chemistry for this particular fish has not been published, but the lake it lives in is well characterised: like most of the East African rift lakes, Lake Edward is alkaline and moderately mineralised, with open-water pH on the order of 8.5-9.2, conductivity near 900 microsiemens per centimetre, and surface temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius (basin-wide measurements span a much wider range where rivers and crater pools enter). These are warm, hard, alkaline waters by the standards of the African interior. As a generalisation drawn from the lake rather than from the species, those are the conditions Haplochromis mentatus inhabits.

Feeding

Haplochromis mentatus has the classic build of a piscivore, and the 2022 redescription infers, on morphological grounds, that it is most probably a fish-eater; direct gut-content data for the species are not published. The elongate body, acute snout, large jaws and few large teeth are the toolkit of a cichlid that pursues and seizes other fish (the macrodontic, large-toothed condition the authors contrast with the small-toothed piscivores that take smaller or differently handled prey). FishBase places its trophic level around 3.3. In the Lake Edward community its likely prey are the smaller haplochromines and juvenile fishes of the open and inshore zones, making it one of the lake's many specialised predators within an adaptive radiation that has partitioned nearly every feeding niche, from algae-scraping to scale-eating to paedophagy. The split of the piscivores themselves into macrodontic and microdontic forms is read by the describers as evidence that even the fish-eaters have divided the predatory role among themselves by habitat, hunting technique and prey size.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis mentatus specifically; what can be said is drawn from the haplochromine flock to which it belongs. East African haplochromines are maternal mouthbrooders with strong sexual dimorphism in colour: breeding males develop bright nuptial dress, in this case a yellow-green body with a red anterior flank, and display to females to solicit spawning. Males of the group are typically polygynous and defend a small courting territory or display site rather than forming pair bonds, and many haplochromine males carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin that figure in the spawning ritual. Females, plainer and usually smaller, choose among displaying males and provide all of the parental care. None of this has been observed directly in Haplochromis mentatus, and it is offered here as the well-established pattern for its lineage rather than as a species-level record.

Breeding

Breeding in Haplochromis mentatus has not been studied in detail; FishBase records simply that the species is a mouthbrooder, with brooding carried out by the female. This places it squarely in the dominant reproductive mode of the East African haplochromine flock, maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooding. In that mode, which is consistent across the group, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and incubates them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, during which she does not feed; the egg-spots on the male's anal fin are thought to help ensure fertilisation as the female snaps at them while collecting her clutch. Clutch sizes have not been counted for this species, but small-bodied haplochromines of its size typically produce modest broods on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly tens rather than hundreds), reflecting the trade-off of carrying the whole clutch in the buccal cavity. Parental care is by the female alone and ends not long after the fry are released. These figures are genus-typical inferences; no spawning of Haplochromis mentatus itself has been documented.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis mentatus is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a small, plainly coloured, recently redescribed piscivore from a lake system that exports very few of its cichlids to the ornamental trade, and there is no established record of it being kept or bred by aquarists. Unlike the showy haplochromines of Lake Victoria proper, which reach hobbyists as 'Hap' species and conservation-breeding projects, the Edward-George piscivores are known almost entirely from museum and survey collections.

Nothing here should be read as husbandry guidance for a fish that is, for practical purposes, not in cultivation. Were a specialist ever to maintain it, the sensible starting point would be to mirror its lake: hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 8-9), warm temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, and a long tank with open swimming room for an active, slender predator. As a piscivore it would regard tankmates small enough to swallow as food, and as a haplochromine male it would likely be territorial and aggressive when in colour, so a large footprint and a harem-style sex ratio would be the conventional approach. But these are extrapolations from the group, not from experience with the species, and the honest summary is that Haplochromis mentatus is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis mentatus as Least Concern, assessed on 22 August 2021 by Natugonza and Musinguzi, with the population trend listed as unknown and no known widespread threats identified. Its range spans Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the Lake Edward system, and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. The Least Concern status reflects the species' presence across the lake system rather than any evidence of abundance; like much of the Edward-George flock it is known from relatively few collections, and the assessors flag the population as poorly known rather than secure.

The wider context is the general pressure on the Lake Edward basin. The system supports a substantial artisanal fishery (riparian yields of roughly 17,000 tonnes per year), and the basin faces the familiar mix of fishing pressure, catchment degradation, pollution and the looming possibility of oil exploration in the Albertine Rift. The catastrophic collapse that the introduced Nile perch caused among the haplochromines of neighbouring Lake Victoria is a cautionary backdrop for any of these endemic flocks, though Lake Edward has not suffered an equivalent introduction. None of these pressures is documented as a specific threat to this particular cichlid, but they are the conditions under which its long-term status should be watched.
