Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Edward — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis vicarius is a small mouthbrooding cichlid endemic to Lakes Edward and George on the Uganda–DR Congo border, part of the little-known haplochromine flock of the Lake Edward system. Described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933 from the 1930–31 Cambridge Expedition collections, its name means 'substitute' or 'deputy' — Trewavas saw it as the Edward/George ecological counterpart of a Lake Victoria species. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern (2021). It is essentially never kept in aquaria, and much of its biology remains undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis vicarius was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933, in her account of the cichlid fishes collected during the Cambridge Expedition to the East African Lakes of 1930–31 (Journal of the Linnean Society, Zoology, volume 38, page 330). The holotype (BMNH 1933.2.23.336) is held in the Natural History Museum, London, together with a series of paratypes from both Lake Edward and Lake George; the type locality is Lake Edward. The name has stood unchallenged in the standard catalogues since — the Catalog of Fishes and the CLOFFA check-list of African freshwater fishes (van Oijen et al. 1991) both treat it as valid, with no synonyms — though not every specialist has agreed. Trewavas listed seven Haplochromis as endemic to Lake Edward: eduardi, engystoma, fuscus, mentatus, pharyngalis, serridens and vicarius. Of those, Max Poll — whose own fieldwork on the Lake Edward system predates the modern revisions — considered vicarius a synonym of the similarly Edward-restricted Haplochromis eduardi, a view Ad Konings has flagged as an unresolved disagreement rather than a settled question in his review of the system's literature. Until the flock receives the modern taxonomic attention it needs, readers should treat the two names as possibly redundant rather than assume vicarius is unambiguously distinct. Like almost every member of the East African 'Haplochromis' assemblage, vicarius sits in a genus that is a taxonomic holding-pen: the riverine type species of Haplochromis (Haplochromis obliquidens of the Lake Victoria region) anchors a name that has been applied to many hundreds of lacustrine species across Victoria, Edward, George, Kivu and Kyoga. Greenwood's revisions of the 1970s and 1980s split much of the Victoria flock into satellite genera, and some workers would place Edward/George piscivores in Harpagochromis or Prognathochromis; Haplochromis vicarius itself has never been formally reassigned, so the conservative binomial Haplochromis vicarius — and the Haplochromis heading used here — remains the name in current use. The Lake Edward system flock has only recently begun to be revised in earnest (Vranken, Van Steenberge, Decru, Snoeks and colleagues, 2018–2022), and vicarius has so far not been the subject of a modern redescription.

Morphology

Haplochromis vicarius is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 4.5 in total length, and museum specimens re-examined in recent Lake Edward studies fall well below that (individuals around 2–3 in standard length appear in collection lots). The body is the typical haplochromine form — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a single continuous dorsal fin and the cycloid-to-ctenoid scaling of the group. No modern colour description has been published, and because the species has not been imaged alive in any detail, its breeding coloration is essentially unrecorded; by analogy with its relatives, dominant males would be expected to be the more colourful sex and to carry egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin, with females and non-breeding fish a plainer silvery-brown. Detailed diagnostic counts (fin-ray formulae, tooth form, gill-raker numbers) rest on Trewavas's original 1933 description and have not been restated in the recent literature. Sexual dimorphism is presumed present, as it is throughout the haplochromines — males larger and more colourful, bearing the anal egg-spots used in spawning — but it has not been documented in detail for this species specifically.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Lake Edward system — Lakes Edward and George and the Kazinga Channel that links them — straddling the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, within the western (Albertine) arm of the East African Rift. FishBase records it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of the 1°N–1°S equatorial band. These are not the deep, clear waters of Tanganyika: Lake Edward is a moderately deep rift lake (around 361–394 ft at its deepest but largely far shallower), while Lake George is extremely shallow — mean depth only about 8 ft and a maximum near 13 ft — warm, turbid and highly productive. Both lakes are alkaline and well-mineralised; open-lake measurements put surface temperatures around 75–81 °F, pH in the alkaline 8.5–9.5 range and conductivity on the order of 800–1,000 µS/cm, with strong phytoplankton blooms keeping the water green and transparency low. Because vicarius is recorded from both lakes, it is a fish of these warm, alkaline, productive equatorial waters rather than a deep-water specialist; the recent pelagic-cichlid survey of the system did not place it among the open-water species, implying a more inshore or benthic habit, but its precise depth distribution and microhabitat have not been documented.

That presence in both lakes is itself a minor biogeographic puzzle worth flagging. Most of the Haplochromis species described specifically from Lake Edward have never turned up in Lake George or the Kazinga Channel that connects the two, an asymmetry Ad Konings has called an unresolved oddity of the system. One proposed explanation is that these Edward-restricted haplochromines require a biotope absent from George, or cannot swim against the channel's current, which flows from Lake George into Lake Edward. Haplochromis vicarius has been treated as a possible exception to that pattern — but given the unresolved question of whether it is simply Haplochromis eduardi under a second name, it is not clear the 'exception' reflects a real difference in distribution rather than a case of mistaken identity between the two.

Feeding

The diet of Haplochromis vicarius has not been studied directly — no gut-content analysis specific to the species has been published. FishBase carries an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, derived from body size and the trophic positions of close relatives rather than from observation, which points to a generalised invertebrate-leaning diet rather than strict herbivory. Notably, when KU Leuven and Tervuren workers revised the piscivorous and pelagic guilds of the Lake Edward flock (2019–2022), vicarius was not among the fish-eating or open-water zooplanktivorous species, suggesting it is neither a dedicated predator nor a pelagic plankton-feeder. The most natural reading, given its name, is dietary: Trewavas coined 'vicarius' (substitute/deputy) because she regarded the fish as the Edward/George counterpart of a Lake Victoria species — interpreted as Haplochromis cinereus, a Victoria benthivore — which would make vicarius a bottom-oriented invertivore/benthivore of the soft-substrate and inshore zones. That inference, however, rests on the name and on relatives rather than on any feeding study of vicarius itself, and should be treated as provisional.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis vicarius specifically. What can be said follows from the biology of the haplochromine cichlids of the East African lakes, of which this species is a typical member. These fish are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders: there is no lasting pair bond. Sexually active males develop bright nuptial colours and the row of yellow-and-black egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin, and defend a small spawning territory or court ripe females in loose aggregations over the substrate. A male displays to passing females with lateral quivering and fin-spreading; a receptive female follows him to his spawning site. The egg-spots play their well-known role at spawning (described below). Outside the brief spawning act, the sexes lead largely separate lives, and parental investment falls entirely on the female.

Breeding

Haplochromis vicarius is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder — FishBase states plainly 'mouthbrooding by females' — the reproductive mode shared by essentially the whole Edward/George/Victoria haplochromine radiation. No clutch count, brooding duration or fry data have been published for vicarius itself; the following is the well-established genus-typical pattern. The female lays a small batch of relatively large eggs on the substrate and immediately takes them up into her mouth. As she turns to collect them she snaps at the egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin, mistaking them for her own eggs; the male releases milt at that moment, fertilising the clutch inside her mouth. For a small haplochromine of this size, clutches are modest — congeners of comparable length typically carry on the order of 10–40 eggs. The female then broods the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, taking little or no food, and after release continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth at any sign of danger for a further period before they become independent. This mouthbrooding strategy, trading high fecundity for intensive protection of a few large young, is one of the engines behind the explosive speciation of these lake flocks.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis vicarius is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a small, plain, scientifically obscure endemic of two remote equatorial lakes, it has no established presence in the ornamental trade, and it carries no common name in the hobby. It is not bred by hobbyists and is essentially unobtainable; any keeping notes here are therefore extrapolated from the husbandry of related Lake Victoria-region 'Haplochromis', several of which are maintained by specialist keepers and conservation programmes.

Were it ever kept, it would need to be treated as a hard-alkaline-water mouthbrooder, not a soft-water fish. The water of Lakes Edward and George is warm (around 75–81 °F), distinctly alkaline (pH roughly 8.0–9.5) and well-mineralised, so a target of pH 7.8–8.6 with moderately hard, buffered water and a temperature of about 75–81 °F would suit it; the carbonate buffering used for Lake Malawi/Victoria community tanks is the right starting point. A footprint of around 35.5–47 in (a 200-litre-plus tank) would suit a small haplochromine kept, as the group demands, as one male with several females to spread his persistent courtship. A sand substrate, rockwork providing broken sight-lines and territory boundaries, robust filtration and generous water changes complete the standard Victorian-haplochromine set-up. Diet would be small invertebrate and prepared foods. The two recurring pitfalls with this group are hybridisation — closely related haplochromines interbreed readily, so single-species maintenance is essential for any fish of conservation value — and male aggression toward both females and rival males in too small a tank. None of this is documented for vicarius; it is offered only as the realistic husbandry frame for a fish that, in practice, no aquarist will encounter.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis vicarius as Least Concern (assessed 7 September 2021, published 2022, by V. Natugonza and L. Musinguzi), recording it from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda with no known widespread threats and an unknown population trend. It is not listed by CITES. As a fish recorded from both Lake Edward and Lake George, it has a wider footprint within the system than the many single-lake or single-locality endemics, which underlies the low-concern assessment. The broader Lake Edward system nonetheless faces real and accelerating pressures that form the backdrop to any of its endemics: heavy and partly unregulated fishing, catchment deforestation and agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and pollution from the rivers draining a densely populated basin — water-quality surveys of the catchment record locally severe excursions in pH, conductivity and turbidity. The introduction of Nile tilapia and the long shadow of the Lake Victoria experience — where the Nile perch introduction and eutrophication drove hundreds of haplochromine species to extinction or near-extinction — are the cautionary context for a flock that, like vicarius itself, remains incompletely described. Continued taxonomic and ecological work on the Edward/George Haplochromis is needed before the status of its individual members can be judged with confidence.
