Krobia guianensis is a hand-sized, brassy substrate-spawning cichlid of the coastal rivers of the Guianas, ranging from the Demerara of Guyana east across Suriname and into the Araguari of Brazilian Amapá. Long traded in the hobby under its old name Aequidens guianensis, it is one of the Guiana Shield's most familiar 'acaras' — a hardy, mildly territorial pair-bonder that digs its own pits in the sand and guards a clutch on an exposed rock or root. It is the type species of the small genus Krobia, and despite the 'dolphin cichlid' label that follows the genus around in aquarium shops, that established name properly belongs to its relative Krobia itanyi, not to this fish.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1905 as Acara guianensis, from a single specimen labelled simply 'Guiana.' That holotype — BMNH 1851.5.2.8, originally from the Berlin museum — is the only specimen Regan had, and the vagueness of its locality has dogged the species ever since. Over the following century the fish was shuffled through the catch-all genus Aequidens, the name under which most aquarists came to know it, before Sven O. Kullander and Han Nijssen erected the genus Krobia for it in their 1989 monograph on the cichlids of Surinam. Their redescription (1989:151) supplied the first proper diagnosis, illustrations, and distributional account, and fixed Krobia guianensis as the type species of the new genus. Kullander reaffirmed the combination in the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America and in subsequent work. Krobia sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini — the New-World 'acara' assemblage that also holds Aequidens, Bujurquina, Andinoacara and Tahuantinsuyoa. Kullander and Nijssen separated Krobia from those look-alikes chiefly by the unusual reach of its lateral band, which runs from behind the eye up to the base of the dorsal fin rather than back along the flank to the tail, together with nearly scaleless vertical fins, a distinctive furrow for the hyoid artery on the ceratohyal, and a single row of pre-dorsal scales. The genus is small: alongside guianensis it contains Krobia itanyi (Marowijne drainage), Krobia xinguensis (Kullander, 2012, from the rio Xingu), and Krobia petitella (Steele, Liverpool & López-Fernández, 2013, from the Berbice). Kullander's 1998 morphological analysis grouped Krobia with Bujurquina, Tahuantinsuyoa and Andinoacara, but molecular phylogenies (Musilová et al. 2008, 2009; López-Fernández et al. 2010) have not recovered that group as monophyletic, leaving the genus's exact branch on the cichlasomatine tree unsettled.

A point of historical confusion is worth flagging: older literature reporting 'Aequidens vittatus' (now Bujurquina vittata) from Surinam was mistaken — per Kullander and Nijssen's Cichlids of Surinam, those Surinamese records in fact refer to Krobia guianensis, since true Bujurquina vittata does not occur there. Kullander's 1989 monograph also noted two further, then-undescribed Krobia populations circulating in the aquarium trade: one, known to hobbyists as Krobia sp. 'Red Eye,' collected in French Guiana, and another, K. sp. 'Green,' from an unrecorded locality that had already vanished from the hobby by the time of writing. The genus's two long-recognized species, K. guianensis and K. itanyi, are separated most reliably not by resting coloration but by their breeding pigmentation: a spawning K. guianensis develops a pattern of vertical bars across the body, while a spawning K. itanyi retains its horizontal stripe.

Morphology

Krobia guianensis is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid of the classic 'acara' build, reaching about 5 in standard length in the largest recorded wild specimens; most aquarium and field fish are smaller, around 4–4.5 in, with dominant males running to the top of the range. The ground colour is a warm brassy tan to olive-gold, the flanks scattered with iridescent blue-green to silver flecking and the cheeks and gill cover often marked with broken blue-green lines. The defining pattern is the genus's signature lateral band: a dark stripe that arcs from the eye up to the base of the dorsal fin rather than continuing along the body, overlaid in this species by a series of about five vertical bars and five dark blotches along the midline (the 5-bar/5-spot count distinguishes it from its congeners). A black mid-lateral spot and a spot at the upper edge of the caudal peduncle are usually evident. Sexual dimorphism is modest but real: males grow larger and more colourful and develop somewhat extended, pointed dorsal and anal fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and, in breeding condition, often flush a darker, contrast-heavy pattern. As with many cichlasomatines the differences are easiest to read on a mature, settled pair and unreliable on young or stressed fish.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the coastal river systems of the Guianas and the eastern edge of the Guiana Shield. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes place it in the Guianan coastal drainages from the Demerara River in Guyana eastward through the Essequibo and the Corantijn (the Guyana–Suriname border river) to the Cottica in Suriname; Bragança and colleagues (2014) extended the confirmed range south to the Araguari basin in Amapá, northern Brazil. These are tea-stained to clear lowland waters draining ancient, nutrient-poor shield rock, and the fish keeps to quieter, slow- to moderate-flowing reaches — small forest creeks, river margins, swamps and stagnant backwaters — rather than fast current. In the field it is associated with submerged root tangles and woody structure along the banks, over bottoms of sand and pebble where it can dig and into which it retreats when alarmed. The water is warm, soft and acidic to near-neutral: FishBase gives a preferred pH of about 6.0–7.0 and a hardness of roughly 5–14 dGH, with field temperatures spanning a broad 73–90 °F across the seasons. Because most populations live in shallow coastal streams and floodplain habitat, the depth occupied is modest — typically the upper metre or two of small water bodies — and no great depth range is documented for the species.

Feeding

Krobia guianensis is a benthic omnivore with a carnivorous lean — an opportunistic micropredator and invertebrate forager rather than a specialist. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a diet built around small bottom-living animals: aquatic insect larvae (chironomids and others), small crustaceans, worms and other benthos, taken alongside organic detritus, fallen plant matter and the films that coat submerged wood and leaf litter. Like its eartheater-adjacent relatives it works the substrate actively, taking mouthfuls of sand and sifting them for edible material, and this digging is a core part of its foraging behaviour rather than a quirk of captivity. In the leaf-littered, root-choked margins of Guiana Shield creeks it functions as a generalist that converts the abundant invertebrate and detrital production of these tannin-stained waters, and in the aquarium that translates into an undemanding fish that readily accepts prepared, frozen and live foods.

Mating

Once formed, a Krobia guianensis pair bond is unusually durable for a substrate-spawning cichlid: Ad Konings notes that paired fish stay together for years, not just for a single spawning cycle, and that the pair keeps defending its chosen territory even between broods, when no eggs or fry are present. Courtship itself runs through the usual cichlid repertoire — lateral displays, fin-spreading, jaw-locking and mutual substrate-cleaning — and the female intensifies in colour and rounds out with eggs as a spawn approaches; in the aquarium, pairs typically form from a group as fish mature and choose one another rather than being reliably paired by the keeper. Once bonded, the pair is pointedly intolerant of conspecifics and of other bottom-oriented fish that stray near their territory, and rival pairs or surplus individuals are driven off — but this is a standing condition of the established pair's home range, not a phase that appears only around spawning. As with many New-World pair-spawners, the real danger window is during the initial pairing process — an unsettled or mismatched pair can turn on each other — so the social structure that produces a good pair (a group in a roomy tank, allowed to sort itself out) is also the husbandry that keeps both fish alive once bonded.

Breeding

Krobia guianensis is a biparental substrate spawner — an open, or exposed-site, brooder rather than a cave-hider. The pair cleans a firm surface (a flat stone, a broad root, a leaf, or in aquaria a slate or the side of a flowerpot) and the female lays her eggs there in the open; FishBase records the species producing up to about 500 eggs, in line with similar-sized cichlasomatines. An established pair is site-faithful, returning to lay successive clutches at the same spot within its territory spawn after spawn (Konings). Both parents share the brood: the female tends and fans the clutch while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory, and the pair excavates one or more pits in the sand nearby into which the wrigglers are moved after hatching. The fry become free-swimming within several days and are shepherded as a school by both parents, herded back to the pits at any disturbance and guarded through the early free-swimming stage. Reported aquarium spawnings are straightforward by cichlid standards — soft, slightly acidic water around pH 6 and temperatures near 79 °F are the usual triggers — and well-conditioned pairs will spawn repeatedly. The main pitfall is the same intraspecific aggression that governs pairing: a poorly matched pair may eat eggs or fight, but an established pair given space generally raises broods without difficulty.

In the aquarium

Krobia guianensis has been a steady, if not flashy, presence in the South-American cichlid hobby for decades, much of that time under the name Aequidens guianensis. It is regarded as hardy, adaptable and a good choice for a mixed Guiana- or Amazon-themed community: attractively marked, generally peaceful for a cichlid, and undemanding about water chemistry. A single pair can be housed in a tank of roughly 30–40 US gal, but a larger footprint — 55 US gal or more — is strongly preferable for keeping a group, allowing a pair to form naturally and giving subordinate fish room to escape, which is the single most reliable way to avoid the intraspecific squabbling that flares around spawning.

The substrate matters: this is a digger, so fine sand or smooth fine gravel is the right choice, deep enough for the fish to excavate pits and sift mouthfuls without abrading itself on sharp grains. Expect the aquascape to be rearranged and loosely rooted plants to be undermined; sturdy, well-anchored or potted plants, driftwood, and tangles of root or branch (which the fish uses as cover and sightline breaks) suit it best, along with leaf litter and subdued lighting to echo its tannin-stained home waters. Provide flat stones or broad roots as potential spawning sites for anyone hoping to breed it.

Water conditions should reflect the soft, warm, slightly acidic coastal streams of the Guianas: temperature around 75–82 °F (the species tolerates a wide 73–90 °F in the wild), pH roughly 5.5–7.2, and soft to moderately hard water (about 5–14 dGH). It is forgiving — long-domesticated stock copes with harder, more neutral tap water — but the best colour and breeding readiness come at the lower, softer, more acidic end of that range. Like most cichlids it is sensitive to accumulated dissolved waste, so mature filtration and regular partial water changes are the baseline; gentle to moderate flow is appropriate, as these are not rheophilic fish.

Feeding is easy. A varied diet of quality sinking pellets or flake supplemented with frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp and similar small invertebrates keeps it in good condition and colour; occasional vegetable content rounds it out. Tankmates should be chosen for temperament rather than size: medium peaceful South Americans — other calm acaras and eartheaters (given enough floor space), larger characins such as tetras and headstanders, hatchetfish up top, and Corydoras or peaceful loricariids on the bottom — work well. Avoid large aggressive cichlids that will bully it and avoid crowding two would-be pairs into a small tank. The most common keeper mistakes are underestimating its digging (and losing an aquascape to it), and confining a group too tightly, which turns ordinary breeding territoriality into lethal aggression.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Krobia guianensis as Least Concern (assessed 28 December 2020 by D.C. Taphorn and D. Rodríguez-Olarte, published 2022), with a population trend reported as stable. The assessment notes a relatively wide distribution across the Guiana Shield coastal drainages and no evidence of a population-level decline; the species carries no CITES listing. It is harvested in a minor way for the ornamental aquarium trade and is taken in small-scale local fisheries, but neither is flagged as a threat at the scale of the species. As a habitat generalist of coastal Guiana rivers it is far less exposed than narrow-range shield endemics. The broader backdrop, however, is the mounting pressure on Guiana Shield freshwaters: gold mining and the associated mercury contamination and sedimentation, deforestation, and infrastructure development are documented stressors on the region's rivers. None is identified as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they frame the longer-term outlook for the coastal drainages it depends on.
