Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis heterodon was described in 1982 by Digby S. C. Lewis in a revision of the genus Labidochromis published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (volume 75, number 3), the same paper that named most of the lake's Labidochromis species. The genus Labidochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 for small Lake Malawi cichlids with a distinctive feeding apparatus: a narrow, forceps-like arrangement of slender, well-spaced, often bicuspid teeth at the front of the jaws, well suited to plucking small animals from the rock film rather than rasping algae like many other mbuna. The name combines Greek 'labis' (a pair of forceps or tongs) with 'chromis' (an old name for a perch-like fish). The species epithet heterodon means 'different teeth,' from Greek 'heteros' (different) and 'odous' (tooth), a reference to variation in tooth form that Lewis used to separate it from its congeners. The holotype (BMNH 1981.1.9.58) and a series of paratypes, spread across the Natural History Museum in London and several other collections, were taken off Boadzulu Island in the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi at roughly 14°13′S, 35°08′E. The species sits in the Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the great endemic 'mbuna' radiation of rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids.
Morphology
Labidochromis heterodon is a small, slender mbuna, reaching about 3 in in standard length (FishBase) — a modest fish even by the standards of its compact genus. It has the typical Labidochromis build: an elongate, only moderately deep and laterally compressed body, a fairly pointed snout, and the small, narrow mouth that defines the genus. The front teeth are slender and well spaced, set in a pincer-like arrangement built for picking rather than scraping; the epithet 'heterodon' points to the differing tooth form Lewis recorded. Colour in life is far less spectacular than that of the yellow lab: living and photographed fish are generally pale to bluish-grey with darker vertical barring on the flanks and the dark dorsal and pelvic markings common in the genus, the whole heightened in dominant, breeding males. As in most mbuna, males develop a brighter sheen and ocellated 'egg-spots' on the anal fin, while females and subordinate males stay plainer; precise published morphometrics beyond the original description are limited.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi, the vast, ancient rift-valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and within it is a fish of the rocky littoral — the 'mbuna' zone. FishBase records it as endemic to Boadzulu Island in the southeastern arm of the lake, and the type series came from those same reefs, making it one of the more narrowly distributed members of the genus. Labidochromis as a group occupy the intermediate and rocky habitats of most Malawi reefs in relatively shallow water, typically within the upper one to twenty metres, and Labidochromis heterodon fits that pattern as a shallow rock-dweller. The water it lives in is the warm, hard, alkaline water characteristic of Lake Malawi — broadly 75–82 °F, a pH around 7.7–8.6 and moderate to high carbonate hardness — and the structure it depends on is a maze of boulders and cobbles coated in the algal 'Aufwuchs' film that shelters the small invertebrates it eats. Like other small Labidochromis it lives at relatively low density spread among the rocks rather than in dense aggregations.
Feeding
Unlike the many mbuna that rasp filamentous algae, Labidochromis are primarily micro-predators, and Labidochromis heterodon is best understood as a picker of small invertebrates from the algal turf. The genus's forceps-like dentition is the key: rather than combing or scraping the Aufwuchs for plant matter, these fish use their slender, well-spaced teeth to tweeze out the tiny animals — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, mites and other meiofauna — that live within it, sometimes taking small amounts of the surrounding algae and detritus incidentally. FishBase places the species at an estimated trophic level of about 2.7, consistent with a small invertebrate-leaning omnivore rather than a strict herbivore. No dedicated gut-content study has been published for Labidochromis heterodon specifically, so this picture is drawn from the well-documented feeding mode of the genus and the general ecology of the Malawi rock community.
Mating
Like essentially all mbuna, Labidochromis are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders, and Labidochromis heterodon is expected to follow that template, although its courtship has not been described in detail. In the genus, a dominant male establishes and defends a small territory among the rocks — often centred on a crevice or sheltered patch of substrate — and intensifies in colour to court passing females with quivering lateral displays and circling. Spawning follows the classic haplochromine sequence: the female lays a small batch of eggs on the rock and immediately takes them into her mouth, then nuzzles the male's anal-fin egg-spots, drawing in milt to fertilise the clutch she already holds. There is no pair bond; the male's contribution ends at fertilisation, and a single male may spawn with several females over a season. Sexual dimorphism is the usual mbuna pattern of brighter, egg-spotted males and plainer females, though it is comparatively muted in this species relative to the vividly coloured yellow lab.
Breeding
Breeding in Labidochromis heterodon has not been documented in detail in the wild or in captivity, but it can be described with confidence from the consistent biology of the genus and of Malawi mbuna generally. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity, going without feeding for roughly three weeks while the eggs hatch and the larvae develop on their yolk. Clutches in small Labidochromis are modest — typically on the order of ten to thirty eggs, reflecting the small body size — and the female releases fully formed, free-swimming fry that can take small foods immediately. For a brief period after release she may continue to shelter the young in her mouth when danger threatens. This low-fecundity, high-investment strategy is typical of the rock-dwelling mbuna and contrasts sharply with the large clutches of open-water egg-scatterers; specific clutch counts for Labidochromis heterodon remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis heterodon is only occasionally seen in the hobby and is far less established than the ubiquitous yellow lab; most aquarium Labidochromis sold under the 'lab' name are Labidochromis caeruleus or its variants rather than this species. Where it is kept, its needs are those of a typical small mbuna. It wants the hard, alkaline water of its home lake — a pH comfortably above 7.5 and moderate-to-high hardness — kept warm (roughly 75–81 °F), clean and well filtered, since these fish come from oxygen-rich, stable rift-lake water and are intolerant of accumulated nitrate.
A tank should be aquascaped with plenty of rockwork and caves to provide territories and broken sight-lines, over a fine sand bottom. As a small, comparatively peaceful Labidochromis, it is best housed with other moderately mannered mbuna of similar size rather than with large, boisterous mbita; overcrowding the rockwork helps diffuse aggression among males. Diet should lean toward a quality omnivore or 'invertivore' regime — small frozen and live invertebrates, a good spirulina-inclusive flake or pellet — rather than the very high-algae feeding sometimes recommended for herbivorous mbuna, which can cause digestive trouble. The honest summary is that this is an attractive but understated little cichlid of real but limited hobby presence; it rewards a properly run hard-water mbuna setup but is not the show-stopper its yellow congener is.
Conservation
Labidochromis heterodon was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018. That status reflects the fact that, although the species has a restricted known range in the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, it occupies rocky habitat that is not currently subject to severe localised threats, and it is not targeted by any significant fishery beyond incidental aquarium collection. The broader context is more cautious: Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting pressure from siltation driven by deforestation and agriculture in its catchment, from heavy artisanal fishing, from shoreline development and from the looming effects of warming and changing lake levels — all of which fall hardest on the narrow-range rock-dwelling endemics like the mbuna, whose populations are naturally fragmented island to island and reef to reef. A fish known mainly from a single island's reefs is inherently vulnerable to any local degradation of that habitat, so while heterodon is not of immediate conservation concern, it is exactly the kind of micro-endemic whose security depends on the health of Lake Malawi's rocky littoral as a whole.
