Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Cynotilapia axelrodi is a small, sky-blue mbuna restricted to a short stretch of Lake Malawi's northwestern shore around Nkhata Bay. It belongs to the dog-tooth cichlids — the genus name means just that — and unlike most rock-grazing mbuna it makes its living out in open water, hanging in schools a metre or two above the sand to pick plankton from the current. Long sold under the trade name 'Pseudotropheus kingsizei', it is one of the gentler, more manageable mbuna a keeper can put in a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Warren E. Burgess described this fish in 1976 as Cynotilapia axelrodi, in the seventh of his 'Studies on the family Cichlidae' published in Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine (volume 25, number 2, pages 37-44). Because it was placed in Cynotilapia from the outset, that is its original combination and the author citation carries no parentheses: 'Burgess, 1976'. The genus name is built from the Greek kyon, 'dog', and tilapia, a catch-all term for African cichlids — a reference to the prominent, dog-like canine teeth that set Cynotilapia apart from the otherwise similar Pseudotropheus and Maylandia mbuna. The species epithet honours Herbert R. Axelrod (1927-2017), the entrepreneur and pet-book publisher whose financial backing, including a collecting trip to Lake Malawi, made Burgess's mbuna work possible. It was the second species placed in the genus, after the 1893 type species Cynotilapia afra (Günther); Tony Ribbink and South African colleagues subsequently surveyed rocky habitats across the lake and concluded a further eight Cynotilapia species awaited recognition. Cynotilapia is a valid, currently accepted genus: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, GBIF (which lists the name as accepted, taxon key 2372862) and the IUCN all retain axelrodi in it, and it was never transferred into Maylandia or Metriaclima. The genus was re-examined and its limits clarified by Patrick Tawil (2011) and again by Li, Konings & Stauffer (2016), who sank the monotypic genus Microchromis into Cynotilapia. The original description fixes the type locality only loosely as 'Lake Malawi', without naming a reef; in practice the species is known from a narrow band of the northwestern coast near Nkhata Bay. For most of its time in the hobby it was traded as 'Pseudotropheus sp. kingsizei' — a name later misapplied to a different fish collected at Likoma Island, on the lake's eastern side, now known as Maylandia (Metriaclima) pulpican; that species is a true Pseudotropheus on dentition grounds (bicuspid rather than the unicuspid 'dog teeth' of Cynotilapia) and despite the superficial resemblance that caused the confusion, it differs in dentition, body shape and barring.

Morphology

This is a small mbuna. FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in standard length, and field observers put wild adults at around 3 in total length; well-fed aquarium males may stretch to roughly 3.5 in, with females typically a centimetre or two shorter. The body is the compact, slightly elongate shape typical of open-water Cynotilapia. Sexual dimorphism is clear and is the easiest way to tell the sexes apart. Dominant males are an intense, almost luminous sky-blue to powder-blue, usually crossed by darker vertical bars and carrying the egg-spots on the anal fin that are standard equipment for a mouthbrooding cichlid. Females are smaller and far plainer — greyish overall, often with a yellowish caudal fin that can fade toward pale blue as the fish ages. The defining anatomical feature of the genus, and the reason for the name, is the dentition: the outer jaw teeth are slender, widely spaced and unicuspid (single-pointed), resembling the teeth of a predator and forming the canine 'dog teeth' that distinguish Cynotilapia from the bicuspid-toothed mbuna it otherwise so closely resembles that, absent a look at the teeth, the two are easily confused.

Habitat

Cynotilapia axelrodi is endemic to Lake Malawi and, within that vast lake, to a remarkably small range. The IUCN assessment records it from just three places along the northwestern shore — Mundola (Mundolo) Point south of Nkhata Bay, Nkhata Bay itself, and Lion's Cove — giving an extent of occurrence under 100 square kilometres. Ad Konings describes the same band, from Mundola Point north to Lion's Cove. Note a discrepancy worth flagging: Konings' earlier Cichlids Yearbook, citing Ribbink et al.'s 1983 rocky-habitat survey and subsequent diving aquarists, instead names Chirombo Point as the range's southern limit against the same Lion's Cove northern boundary. Whether Chirombo Point and Mundola Point denote the same site under different names, or genuinely distinct nearby localities, is not resolved in the sources available to us. Rather than the steep rock faces favoured by classic mbuna, it occupies the intermediate zone where rock gives way to sand, and is frequently seen over open sandy bottoms; a population studied north of Nkhata Bay specifically occupied shallow water over a mixed bottom at 4-6 metres, with territorial males defending patches roughly a metre in diameter. It is most numerous at depths of about 4 to 10 metres but has been recorded down to roughly 20 metres; FishBase lists a working depth band of 2 to 10 metres. The surrounding water is the warm, hard, alkaline water characteristic of Lake Malawi — typically around 24-28 degrees Celsius in the inhabited shallows, with a stable high pH in the region of 7.7 to 8.6 and substantial carbonate hardness. As a lacustrine endemic of the open-bottom shallows, it lives entirely within the lake's well-oxygenated, sunlit surface layer.

Feeding

Despite being a member of the mbuna — a group built around grazing the algal 'aufwuchs' film on rocks — axelrodi makes much of its living in the water column. FishBase and field accounts agree that it feeds chiefly on plankton, the suspended micro-crustaceans and other small organisms drifting in the open water just off the bottom. It supplements this with material taken from both sandy and rocky substrata, including algae and small invertebrates picked from the aufwuchs, which makes it an opportunistic omnivore rather than a strict planktivore or a dedicated rock-grazer. FishBase estimates its trophic level at about 3.4, consistent with a diet weighted toward small animal prey. The genus' slender, widely spaced unicuspid teeth are the mechanical reason for this diet: they are poorly suited to combing algal aufwuchs off rock the way a mbuna's close-set bicuspid teeth are, but well suited to snapping up small planktonic invertebrates in open water. This foraging pattern is chiefly a female one — non-territorial fish, predominantly females, gather in schools sometimes 20 to 150 strong that hang one to two metres above the sand and feed on the plankton passing through, while territorial males feed closer to their rock or cave. It lets the species exploit the productive open water over the intermediate zone without competing head-to-head with the dense guild of rock-bound algae grazers.

Mating

Cynotilapia axelrodi is a polygynous, lek-style breeder, like most mbuna. One point is worth correcting here: males are not merely territorial during breeding bouts but, per Konings (Enjoying Cichlids), permanently territorial — a mature male holds his patch near a cave or crevice among the rocks on a standing basis, not just while actively courting. Each male excavates and defends a shallow spawning pit under a few small rocks on the sand at the edge of his territory. It is the females (and non-territorial fish generally) that adopt the more mobile, schooling lifestyle described under Feeding, gathering in open water away from the rocks; the sexes are effectively segregated by this behaviour outside of spawning itself. A receptive female leaves the school and visits a displaying male at his pit, where courtship and spawning take place. That said, aggression between rival males is confined to the immediate vicinity of the rocks rather than spilling into the open water, and the species' comparatively small adult size keeps confrontations from being especially damaging — part of why the fish has a reputation as one of the more even-tempered mbuna despite the males' constant territoriality.

Breeding

Reproduction follows the classic Lake Malawi maternal-mouthbrooding pattern. Spawning happens at or beside the male's excavated pit: the female lays a small clutch of eggs, takes them into her mouth, and collects milt from the male — typically cued by the egg-spot markings on his anal fin — so that fertilisation is completed inside her buccal cavity. She then carries and incubates the developing eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly three weeks, eating little or nothing, before releasing free-swimming fry. The male provides no parental care beyond defending the spawning territory. Clutches are modest in keeping with the female's small size; precise wild fecundity figures have not been published for this species, but congeneric mbuna of similar size typically carry on the order of 10 to 30 eggs per brood. In aquaria the species spawns readily once a settled male holds a territory, and brooding females are best left undisturbed or moved gently to a separate tank to raise the fry.

In the aquarium

Cynotilapia axelrodi is one of the more beginner-accessible mbuna, but it still demands the hard, alkaline water chemistry of Lake Malawi and the heavily structured environment that all rock-dwelling cichlids require. A tank of at least 47 in (roughly 55 US gal) is the practical minimum for a single-species group, and larger is better — 59 in or more gives subordinate fish the space they need to escape harassment from the dominant male. Water should be kept at 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, with substantial carbonate hardness (10–20 dH is typical for a Malawi setup). Regular partial water changes are the most reliable way to maintain these parameters; chemical buffering with commercial Lake Malawi salt mixes or a blend of bicarbonate and Epsom salts is appropriate where tap water is soft. Do not attempt to keep this fish in soft, acidic water — it will stress and fade, and long-term health will deteriorate.

The aquascape should replicate the species' intermediate-zone habitat: a deep sand substrate (play sand or fine aragonite works well) with piles of rocky structures — flat stones, limestone slabs, or inert ceramic rocks stacked to form caves, crevices, and sight breaks. The rock provides refuges where females and subordinate males can escape the resident male's attention, and it also gives females somewhere to retreat when brooding. Although axelrodi is less exclusively reef-bound than some mbuna, the presence of structured rock dramatically reduces chronic stress and injury in the group. Avoid large areas of open sand without any cover nearby, as subordinate fish will have nowhere to go when chased.

The species can be kept as a group of one male with three to five females, which is the standard mbuna ratio and the safest approach for most keepers. Note that the resident male holds his rock territory on a standing basis, not just around active spawning — this is a genuinely, permanently territorial male, per Konings, rather than one that relaxes between broods — so give him a clearly defined cave or crevice he can call his own and enough open sand elsewhere for females to range and school undisturbed. Aggression is nonetheless concentrated near that territory rather than tank-wide, and the species is milder than many mbuna and rarely kills tankmates outright. Suitable companions in a mixed Malawi community are other open-water or intermediate-zone species of comparable size and temperament — Copadichromis species, other planktivorous haps of modest aggression, or peacock cichlids (Aulonocara spp.) make workable companions in a larger tank. Avoid housing axelrodi with highly aggressive mbuna such as large Melanochromis or Pseudotropheus species, which may outcompete or injure it. Most importantly, do not keep it alongside other Cynotilapia — particularly any traded as 'Cynotilapia afra' or 'Cynotilapia sp. Hara' — as the genera hybridise readily and the resulting offspring are indistinguishable from pure stock to most eyes. Maintaining genetic integrity is a real responsibility with this fish.

Feeding in captivity is straightforward. The species accepts high-quality cichlid flake or pellet foods readily; a spirulina-based staple supplemented with occasional frozen or live food (daphnia, artemia, cyclops) suits the planktivore/omnivore diet well. Standard mbuna caution applies regarding high-protein animal foods: meaty foods like bloodworm should be used sparingly if at all, as all mbuna-group cichlids are susceptible to 'Malawi bloat' — a digestive and immune crisis associated with dietary imbalance and poor water quality. Feed small amounts twice daily and siphon uneaten food promptly.

Breeding happens without much encouragement once the male has established his territory and the group is settled. The female will brood for roughly three weeks and should be disturbed as little as possible during this period; moving her to a separate container is an option but carries the stress risk of causing her to spit the brood prematurely. If left in the main tank, ensure the rockwork provides adequate hiding spots. Released fry are large enough to take crushed flake immediately. Hobbyists new to mouthbrooding species sometimes mistake a brooding female's sunken, withdrawn appearance for illness — this is normal, and she will resume feeding once she has spat the fry. The most common keeper errors with this species are housing it in undersized tanks that concentrate aggression, failing to maintain hard alkaline water chemistry, and mixing it with congeners or look-alike cichlids that will hybridise with it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cynotilapia axelrodi as Least Concern in 2018 (assessors Konings, Kazembe & Makocho; reviewer Snoeks), an upgrade from the Vulnerable listing it carried in 2006. The reasoning is worth understanding, because on paper the species looks fragile: it is endemic to Lake Malawi, known from only three closely spaced sites, and has an extent of occurrence well under 100 square kilometres, which on the area criterion alone would flag it as threatened. The assessors nonetheless judged future population declines unlikely and the impact of the aquarium trade — through which it is irregularly collected — to be negligible, so the species was downlisted to Least Concern. Its narrow, shallow, near-shore range does mean it is more exposed than wide-ranging lake fish to the basin-scale pressures bearing down on Lake Malawi: heavy and increasing fishing effort, shoreline development and the sedimentation that follows catchment deforestation, nutrient loading, and the longer-term effects of a warming climate on the lake's mixing and productivity. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but for a fish whose entire world is a few kilometres of one shoreline, localised habitat degradation is the threat to watch.
