Taxonomy & naming
Digby S.C. Lewis described Labidochromis lividus in 1982 in his landmark revision of the genus published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (volume 75, pp. 189–265). The paper described 13 new Labidochromis species in one sweep, transforming a genus that had previously contained only six known forms into a far richer one. Lewis redefined the genus to include species with bicuspid outer teeth, and Labidochromis lividus was one of the new additions anchored to material from Likoma Island. The holotype is deposited at the Natural History Museum London (NHMUK ZOO 1981.1.9.96); paratypes are held at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington (USNM 226819) and at the NHM London (NHMUK ZOO 1981.1.9.97–100), all from Malawi and collected in 1980. The type locality, as given by Lewis and confirmed by Ad Konings on malawi.si, is the stretch of shoreline between Makulawe Point and Ndomo Point on the west coast of Likoma Island.
The species has remained in Labidochromis without synonymy or subsequent revision, and its authority — Lewis, 1982 — is stable across the Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, IUCN, and GBIF. It sits within the tribe Labidochromini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, the predominantly African lineage of the family Cichlidae. The genus Labidochromis was first established by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 based on a single species, Labidochromis vellicans; Lewis's 1982 revision raised the count to nineteen described species, the same number recognized today, with a further twenty-three or so undescribed forms catalogued by the Cichlid Room Companion and malawi.si.
Two undescribed forms with obvious affinities to Labidochromis lividus circulate in the hobby and the scientific literature: Labidochromis sp. 'lividus mozambique' and Labidochromis sp. 'lividus nkhungu'. Both differ from the described species in coloration, body proportions, and habitat preference, and both are currently treated as distinct undescribed taxa rather than regional variants of Labidochromis lividus.
Morphology
Labidochromis lividus is a small cichlid; FishBase records a maximum of 3 in standard length, placing it among the more diminutive members of an already small genus. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed in the typical mbuna fashion. The defining feature of the genus — and the inspiration for the name Labidochromis ('forceps-fish') — is the narrowly pointed snout and the elongated, procumbent outer teeth in both jaws, which form a structure that functions like a pair of tweezers, ideal for extracting food from crevices that wider-mouthed competitors cannot penetrate.
Coloration is moderate and sexually dimorphic, though less dramatically so than in many mbuna. Males in breeding condition display a dark body ground colour overlaid with thin pale blue vertical bars that can extend up into the base of the dorsal fin — the 'black and blue' or lead-bruised aspect that Lewis encoded in the species name. Females are light brown with grey-brown bars; the contrast is clear but nowhere near as vivid as in the male's nuptial dress. Outside of the spawning season, males may be considerably duller, making sex determination harder without examining genital papillae, a challenge that applies to many Labidochromis species. No other Labidochromis at Likoma Island combines this combination of small size, shallow transitional habitat, and blue-barred male coloration, which collectively distinguish Labidochromis lividus from its island neighbours including Labidochromis freibergi and Labidochromis joanjohnsonae.
Habitat
Labidochromis lividus is endemic to Lake Malawi, confined to Likoma Island on the lake's eastern side (the island itself belongs politically to Malawi but sits within Mozambican territorial waters). The IUCN estimates the species' extent of occurrence and area of occupancy both at 35 mi², one of the smallest ranges of any cichlid assessed at Least Concern. Records extend around the western and northern shores of the island; the type locality sits on the west coast between Makulawe Point and Ndomo Point.
The habitat is the transitional zone where sandy substrate meets the base of rocky outcrops — not the brightly lit, algae-encrusted rock face that many mbuna favour, but the shaded interface where small caves, narrow crevices, and rubble accumulate at the sand-rock boundary. The species inhabits these micro-habitats at shallow depths, recorded from 3–26 ft by FishBase, consistent with the well-lit littoral zone of Likoma's shoreline. Field observations confirm that it is a secretive, partially hidden fish that moves along the cave entrances and narrow passages rather than feeding in the open.
The water at Likoma Island is characteristic of the lake's hard, alkaline chemistry. Field measurements from the Likoma area record pH 7.9–8.5, electrical conductivity 210–220 µS/cm, total hardness (as CaCO3) 60–86 mg/L, and temperatures ranging from 73 °F during the windy dry season (June–September) to 82 °F in the rainy season (December–April). FishBase's preferred range for the species is 75–79 °F and pH 7.7–8.3, hardness 7–20 dH. The water is notably clear and low in nutrients, supporting the dense algal biocover on which the species depends.
Feeding
Labidochromis lividus is an algae-picker and herbivore. The IUCN assessment describes it as feeding on algae from the biocover, and malawi.si records that in the wild it grazes primarily on algae growing at the entrances of crevices and small caves, particularly patches on sediment-free surfaces that are inaccessible to most other herbivores. This is exactly the ecological niche that the genus's forceps-like dentition evolved to exploit: the narrow snout and procumbent teeth allow the fish to reach into tight spaces and pluck material that a blunter-snouted competitor would have no access to.
The genus encompasses a wider dietary spectrum — Labidochromis caeruleus picks small invertebrates, Labidochromis freibergi scrapes aufwuchs directly from rock surfaces — but Labidochromis lividus appears to sit toward the herbivore end of this gradient, favouring the algal growth at crevice margins over the open rock face. FishBase estimates a trophic level of 2.7 for the species, consistent with a predominantly plant-based diet supplemented opportunistically by small invertebrates in the algal matrix. In the aquarium it accepts a broad range of foods but should receive a diet weighted toward spirulina-based pellets and other vegetable matter; like most mbuna it can accumulate fat quickly on a protein-heavy diet.
Mating
Social organisation in Labidochromis lividus follows the pattern typical of Labidochromis: males are site-holders rather than wide-ranging territory defenders. IUCN field data report that territorial males have been observed throughout the year defending small caves among the rocky habitat — there is no seasonally confined breeding peak. The territorial males are, in Ad Konings's phrase, 'algae gardeners', feeding within their defended patch and displaying to females that pass through.
Females are not territorial. They move through the habitat, assessing males before approaching the defended cave to spawn. The male's display involves flaring fins and lateral presentation of his blue-barred flank; the intensity of the nuptial colour likely functions as a quality signal. Once a female enters the cave, spawning proceeds quickly. The cave serves both as display arena and spawning site, keeping the encounter off the open rock face where predators patrol.
In an aquarium setting, males will establish and defend territories against conspecifics; in a mixed-mbuna tank, inter-male aggression is generally moderate — Labidochromis lividus is not among the more aggressive mbuna, and keepers describe it as relatively peaceable, though, as with any cichlid under constraint, underprovision of cave structures or keeping two males without visual breaks will escalate conflict.
Breeding
Labidochromis lividus is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all known Labidochromis species. The female takes the clutch of eggs into her mouth immediately after fertilisation and carries them through the incubation period without feeding. No clutch-size data have been published specifically for Labidochromis lividus, but the genus provides a consistent reference point: aquarium observations of Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' by Knabe (1992, reported in Artigas Azas 2024 in Tropical Fish Hobbyist) recorded clutches of 7–18 fry, released around three weeks after spawning; this genus-typical figure is a reasonable baseline for Labidochromis lividus until species-specific data are published.
All Labidochromis are described as semelcavous mouthbrooders — once the fry are released, they do not return to the mother's mouth (or do so only briefly within the first day). Fry-guarding females have not been documented in the wild for any Labidochromis. In captivity, a dedicated breeding setup of around 55 US gal with multiple cave structures and a male-to-female ratio favouring females (one male to two or more females) is the standard approach; the female can be moved to a separate tank to brood undisturbed, though experienced keepers note that Labidochromis lividus females are not particularly prone to stress-spitting compared to more skittish mbuna. Water temperature should be held at 75–81 °F and pH 7.8–8.4. The species is seldom traded and rarely kept; captive groups are few, making it a genuinely scarce fish in the hobby despite no unusual care demands.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis lividus is rarely kept in the hobby. It does not appear regularly in the ornamental trade and most keepers who maintain it have sourced fish directly from specialist breeders or importers with connections to Malawian export operations. That scarcity aside, the species presents no unusual husbandry challenges: its care falls squarely within the framework that applies to all Lake Malawi mbuna, and any keeper experienced with that group will find Labidochromis lividus straightforward to maintain.
A tank of around 30–40 US gal (roughly 39.5 in in length) is adequate for a single small group, though a larger footprint — 40–55 US gal and upward — is preferable if you intend to keep a colony with multiple females or combine Labidochromis lividus with additional Malawi species. The most important structural element is rockwork. Stacked cichlid stone, slate, or smooth cobbles arranged to create a generous number of caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices is the priority; this reproduces the transitional rock-sand habitat the species occupies at Likoma Island, provides shelter for females holding fry, and gives subordinate fish somewhere to retreat when a dominant male becomes assertive. A fine, pale-coloured sand substrate over the tank floor completes the setup; a patch of open sand in front of the rockwork is appreciated and reflects the species' habitat accurately. Planting is optional and largely cosmetic in a hard alkaline setup; robust, high-pH tolerant plants such as Vallisneria can be used if desired.
Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's hard alkaline profile. Target pH 7.8–8.5, total hardness 10–20 dH, and temperature 75–79 °F; these ranges align directly with the field measurements from Likoma Island documented in the Habitat section and with the FishBase preferred parameters for the species. Stable chemistry is more important than hitting any exact number. Regular partial water changes — 20–30% weekly — prevent nitrate accumulation without destabilising hardness or pH. Good filtration is advisable; mbuna produce waste at a rate that rewards turnover. Avoid soft, acidic water; prolonged exposure to pH below 7.5 or to soft water will cause visible stress and vulnerability to disease.
Diet should be weighted strongly toward plant-based foods. Spirulina pellets or flake, Nori algae, and other vegetable matter should make up the majority of the daily ration, supplemented occasionally with small invertebrate foods such as mysis or brine shrimp. Mbuna fed a high-protein diet over time are susceptible to Malawi bloat — a potentially fatal internal bacterial infection with symptoms including abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, and pale stringy faeces — and Labidochromis lividus is no exception to this rule. Feeding frequency is best split into two or three small meals daily rather than one large one. For a species of this size (under 3 in standard length), food particle size should be kept appropriately small.
Labidochromis lividus is considered comparatively peaceable by mbuna standards. Males hold territories around favoured caves and will defend them against conspecific males, but inter-species aggression is typically lower than in the more combative mbuna genera such as Melanochromis or Pseudotropheus. Suitable tankmates are other mild-mannered Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament — Labidochromis caeruleus is a well-established companion, and some keepers combine Labidochromis lividus with Iodotropheus or small Cynotilapia species. Mixing it with aggressive mbuna or with considerably larger species is inadvisable; Labidochromis lividus will be bullied. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder, and spawning in a community tank is possible but fry survival is improved by isolating the brooding female. The female incubates eggs and fry in her mouth for approximately three weeks; fry are free-swimming at release and, once out, are not re-admitted to the mother's mouth. Raising fry on crushed spirulina and fine Artemia nauplii is straightforward.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Labidochromis lividus as Least Concern in June 2018 (Ad Konings, assessor; J. Snoeks, reviewer; published 2018 as e.T61097A47233819). This is an upgrade from its previous Vulnerable listing in 2006. The reclassification rests on the reasoning that although the species meets the small-area thresholds under Criterion B (EOO and AOO both approximately 35 mi², one known location), continuing declines in habitat quality or population size are uncertain. The IUCN assessment notes that sedimentation affects the species' shallow rocky habitat but that sufficient light penetration for algal growth probably persists; the population is described as 'rather rarely encountered', and population trend is unknown. No conservation actions are currently in place; population monitoring and site management are recommended.
The species is not targeted by the ornamental fish trade — it is scarce in the hobby and carries no trade pressure specific to it. That absence of collection pressure is a modest positive, but the picture for the lake more broadly is concerning. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) document that Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa is experiencing severe adverse impacts from anthropogenic and climatic stressors: increased sediment and nutrient loading from deforestation and agriculture in the catchment, over-fishing, and climate-driven variability in thermal stratification and productivity. For a species with an AOO of 35 mi² confined to a shallow, sediment-vulnerable transitional habitat on a single island, sedimentation and any degradation of Likoma Island's shoreline are the most direct threats — factors the IUCN flagged but treated as uncertain in 2018. A species holding the smallest describable footprint in a lake under accelerating pressure is not a comfortable position, even under a Least Concern banner.
