Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis mbenjii was described in 1982 by Digby S. C. Lewis in his revision of the genus Labidochromis, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (volume 75, number 3). The genus Labidochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 for small Lake Malawi cichlids characterised by a forceps-like jaw apparatus — slender, well-spaced teeth at the front of the mouth, adapted for plucking small animals out of the rock film rather than for scraping algae. The genus name combines Greek 'labis' (a pair of forceps) and 'chromis' (an old name for a perch-like fish). The epithet mbenjii is a toponym, honouring Mbenji Island in Lake Malawi, the type locality — the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes explicitly treats it as a place-name reference. The holotype (BMNH 1981.1.9.41) and paratype series are held at the Natural History Museum in London and several other collections; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the type locality as Lake Malawi, with FishBase and the wider literature pinning the species to the Mbenji Islands and their surrounding reefs. The species sits in the Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the endemic mbuna radiation.
Morphology
Labidochromis mbenjii is among the smaller members of its genus, reaching about 2.5 in in standard length (FishBase). It shows the standard Labidochromis form — a slim, only moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a fairly pointed snout, and the small, narrow mouth carrying the slender forceps-like teeth that define the genus. As in other mbuna, the species is sexually dichromatic, with dominant males more strongly coloured and patterned, carrying the usual ocellated egg-spots on the anal fin, while females and subordinate males remain plainer. Colour in life follows the muted, barred pattern common to many of the lake's smaller Labidochromis rather than the vivid solid yellow of the famous yellow lab. Beyond Lewis's original diagnosis, detailed published morphometric data for the species are limited, and most descriptive notes come from the original revision and from observation of Mbenji-form fish.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi — the ancient rift-valley lake bordered by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania — and within it is restricted to the Mbenji Islands and the reefs immediately around them, a small island group in the central part of the lake. It is a fish of the mbuna zone, the rocky littoral where the lake's small rock-cichlids live, typically in relatively shallow water within roughly the upper one to twenty metres. FishBase records a temperature range of about 75–79 °F, matching the warm surface water of the lake, which is also hard and strongly alkaline, with a pH well above neutral and high carbonate hardness. The fish depends on the rock matrix and the algal 'Aufwuchs' film coating it, which provides both cover and the small invertebrate prey it feeds on. As with many Labidochromis, this tight, island-centred range — populations effectively confined to one cluster of reefs — is a defining feature of the species' ecology.
Feeding
Labidochromis mbenjii is, like its congeners, a micro-predator built around the genus's distinctive forceps-toothed jaws rather than an algae-rasping grazer. Its slender, well-spaced front teeth are tools for picking: the fish tweezes tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, mites and other meiofauna — from within the algal turf on the rocks, ingesting some algae and detritus along the way. FishBase places the species at an estimated trophic level of about 2.7, consistent with a small invertebrate-leaning omnivore. No dedicated dietary study has been published for Labidochromis mbenjii specifically; this account is drawn from the well-established feeding mode of the genus and from the broader ecology of Lake Malawi's rocky reefs, where Labidochromis occupy the role of small invertebrate-pickers among a crowd of more herbivorous mbuna.
Mating
As a typical mbuna, Labidochromis mbenjii is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, although its courtship has not been described in detail. The genus follows the standard haplochromine routine: a dominant male holds and defends a small rocky territory, brightens in colour, and courts passing females with quivering lateral displays and circling. Spawning proceeds through the familiar egg-and-anal-spot sequence — the female lays a few eggs, immediately takes them into her mouth, and then mouths at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin, drawing in milt to fertilise the clutch she already carries. There is no pair bond and no paternal care; a single male may spawn with several females over a season. Sexual dimorphism is the usual mbuna pattern of brighter, egg-spotted males and plainer females.
Breeding
Breeding specifics for Labidochromis mbenjii are not documented in the literature, but can be described with confidence from the consistent biology of the genus and of Malawi mbuna generally. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity for around three weeks, fasting while the eggs hatch and the larvae develop on their yolk, then releases fully formed, free-swimming fry able to feed immediately. Given the species' small size, clutches are modest — typically on the order of ten to thirty eggs in small Labidochromis — and for a short period after release the female may continue to gather the fry back into her mouth when danger threatens. This low-fecundity, high-parental-investment strategy is shared across the rock-dwelling mbuna; precise clutch counts and timings for Labidochromis mbenjii itself remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis mbenjii is only occasionally available in the hobby and is much less established than the ubiquitous yellow lab; most aquarium 'labs' are Labidochromis caeruleus rather than this Mbenji endemic. Where it is kept, its requirements are those of a typical small mbuna. It needs the hard, alkaline, warm water of its home lake — a pH comfortably above 7.5, moderate-to-high hardness and a temperature around 75–81 °F — kept clean and well filtered, as rift-lake fish demand oxygen-rich, stable, low-nitrate conditions.
A suitable tank is aquascaped with abundant rockwork and caves over a sand bottom, providing territories and broken sight-lines. As a small Labidochromis, it suits a community of other moderately mannered mbuna of similar size; plenty of rock to spread out territorial males helps temper aggression, and crowding the cast a little is a standard way to diffuse it in Malawi setups. Diet should follow the genus's invertivore leaning — quality flake or pellet supplemented with small frozen and live invertebrates — rather than the very high-algae regime sometimes recommended for strictly herbivorous mbuna. In short, it is a tidy, manageable little cichlid for an experienced hard-water aquarist, but a comparative rarity rather than a hobby mainstay.
Conservation
Labidochromis mbenjii was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018. The rating reflects that, while the species is restricted to the Mbenji Islands and their reefs, that rocky habitat is not currently under severe localised threat and the fish is not subject to significant fishing pressure beyond incidental aquarium collection. The broader situation for Lake Malawi's narrow-range rock endemics is more cautious: the lake faces increasing pressure from catchment deforestation and resulting siltation, from heavy artisanal fisheries, from shoreline development and from the longer-term effects of warming and lake-level change. These stresses fall hardest on mbuna whose populations are naturally fragmented from one island or reef to the next, and a species effectively confined to a single island group is inherently vulnerable to any local degradation of its habitat. Labidochromis mbenjii is therefore not of immediate conservation concern but exemplifies the kind of micro-endemic whose security depends on the continued health of Lake Malawi's rocky littoral as a whole.
