Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 as Acara flavilabris, in his account of fishes collected in the Marañón region of the Peruvian Amazon (Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 11). The type locality is given as "near Pebas" — Cope's original text reads "Ecuador," but the place is in fact in Peru, on the Amazon downstream of Iquitos, and the catalogue record corrects it accordingly. The name rests on a single fish, the unique holotype ANSP 9156 in the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, later listed in Böhlke's 1984 type catalogue. Over the following century the fish was shuffled between genera: it was carried for a time under the catch-all Aequidens (e.g. Ovchynnyk 1967; Ortega & Vari 1986) before Sven O. Kullander, in his landmark 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, erected the genus Laetacara for the small "smiling" acaras and redescribed flavilabris (page 328) with a full diagnosis, description, distribution and figures. Laetacara flavilabris is the type species of the genus. Within Laetacara it belongs to the larger-bodied, longer-snouted assemblage alongside Laetacara thayeri, as opposed to the small, deep-bodied curviceps–dorsigera group; Staeck & Schindler (2007), in describing Laetacara fulvipinnis, used it as a key comparison. Synonyms include Acara freniferus. The genus sits in the Neotropical subfamily (variously Cichlinae / Cichlasomatinae) and the tribe Cichlasomatini.
Morphology
Laetacara flavilabris is one of the larger members of its genus. FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in standard length; wild and aquarium specimens commonly run a good deal smaller, with the comparative series Staeck & Schindler examined from the rio Moa in Acre measuring 2–3 in SL. The body is the typical Laetacara shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a gently arched forehead and a rounded snout — but flavilabris is appreciably more elongate and longer-snouted than the little curviceps and dorsigera. Ground colour is a warm beige to olive-brown, paler below, overlaid by the genus's signature head pattern: alternating dark and light stripes running across the snout and through the eye, and oblique bars on the cheek. A bold dark mid-lateral spot sits on the flank at about the middle of the body; in flavilabris up to roughly 2.5 in SL this spot characteristically sends an extension up and back (dorso-caudally), a feature that helps separate it from close relatives. A dark lateral stripe runs from behind the eye toward that spot, and a series of faint vertical bars crosses the rear flank and caudal peduncle. Diagnostic counts include a high number of dorsal-fin spines (typically about XVI, more than the ~XV of fulvipinnis) and roughly 24 scales in the E1 row; in larger fish the dorsal-fin base becomes moderately scaled. The common name comes from the lower lip, which is washed with yellow. Sexual dimorphism is modest and typical of the genus: males grow somewhat larger and develop longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; both sexes intensify their colours and head markings when breeding.
Habitat
Laetacara flavilabris is a fish of the western Amazon lowlands. Its range covers the upper tributaries of the Solimões (upper Amazon) drainage: the Napo and Putumayo systems in Ecuador; the Huallaga, Ucayali, Amazon, Putumayo and Yavarí basins in Peru; and the upper Solimões and Juruá basins in Brazil, reaching into Colombia along the shared Putumayo border. Almost all of this falls within the Amazonas Lowlands freshwater ecoregion, which extends west along the Napo, Marañón and Ucayali to the foot of the Andean piedmont. FishBase characterises its biotope as forest streams and swamps with clear, dark water — the soft, tea-coloured, gently flowing margins typical of igarapés and floodplain pools rather than the open main river. In-situ water is warm and acidic: FishBase reports a temperature preference of about 75–82 °F and a pH range near 5.5–6.5, with very soft (low-hardness) water. As a small, shoreline-associated cichlid it keeps to shallow, structured water — close relatives in comparable blackwater habitats are netted in the marginal zone at depths of only tens of centimetres, and there is no evidence flavilabris ventures deep; FishBase classes it as benthopelagic. It shelters among leaf litter, submerged roots and marginal vegetation in the calm edge-waters of these forest streams.
Feeding
Laetacara flavilabris is a small benthic micro-predator and opportunist. FishBase records its wild food as insect debris, fish scales and shrimps, and estimates a trophic level of about 3.5, placing it among the more carnivorously inclined members of the genus. In practice it forages over the soft bottom and through leaf litter and root tangles, picking small aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other invertebrates, and taking the occasional scale or fragment of fish. It is not a dedicated sand-sifter like the larger eartheaters; rather it works the substrate surface and lower water column of its shallow forest-stream habitat, a foraging style well suited to a fish that spends much of its time hovering among cover near the bank. In its community it occupies the role of a small invertebrate-feeder of the leaf-litter zone.
Mating
Like the rest of Laetacara, flavilabris is a monogamous pair-bonding cichlid whose social life revolves around the formation and defence of a small spawning territory. Outside breeding the fish are peaceable and may be found in loose company; as a pair forms, the two partners stake out and defend a modest patch of bottom centred on a chosen spawning surface. Courtship draws on the genus's expressive head and lip markings — the yellow lower lip and the contrasting snout stripes are flashed in lateral displays — and on intensified body colour. Pair bonds in the genus tend to form early and can be durable, with both fish sharing in the work that follows. Aggression is real but limited, flaring mainly at the height of breeding and directed at intruders that approach the nest; away from the spawn the species is among the gentler New-World cichlids, which is much of its appeal.
Breeding
Laetacara flavilabris is a biparental, open substrate spawner. FishBase records that it spawns on flat surfaces and that both parents guard the eggs and larvae — the classic Laetacara pattern, in which the pair cleans a horizontal leaf or flat stone and the female lays her adhesive eggs in neat rows while the male follows to fertilise them. The eggs and the wrigglers that hatch from them are tended jointly: the parents fan and clean the clutch, then shepherd the free-swimming fry in a tight school, moving them between pits dug in the substrate and defending them against all comers. Species-specific clutch counts for flavilabris are not well documented in the literature, but congeneric smiling acaras are modest spawners, typically producing on the order of one to two hundred eggs per spawn (genus-typical figure). Brood care lasts several weeks until the fry are independent. The genus is generally an undemanding breeder in soft, warm, acidic water of the kind the species inhabits in the wild, with spawnings often triggered by water changes and a rich diet of live and frozen foods.
In the aquarium
Laetacara flavilabris is a soft-water dwarf cichlid of the same temperament as the better-known flag acara, and is kept on the same principles, though it is less often seen in the trade — fish imported from Peru under this name are sometimes the closely similar Laetacara thayeri, so identification is worth checking. A single pair can be housed in a tank from about 23.5 in / 24 in upward; a footprint of 31.5 in or more gives a pair room to hold a territory comfortably and is preferable if other fish are present. The fish is undemanding in décor but at its best in a biotope-style setup: a soft sandy bottom, a scatter of driftwood and roots, dried leaf litter (which both stains the water and supports the micro-fauna it likes to pick at), and dim lighting broken by floating plants. At least one flat stone or a broad, firm-leaved plant should be provided as a spawning surface.
Water should mirror the warm, soft, acidic forest streams of the western Amazon: a temperature of roughly 75–82 °F, a pH around 5.5–6.5, and low hardness. The species is sensitive to deteriorating water quality, as soft-water cichlids tend to be, so a mature filter, gentle flow and regular partial water changes matter more than any particular gadget; strong current should be avoided. Diet is straightforward — small live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp form the core, accepted alongside good-quality small sinking foods, and a varied menu brings out the best colour and breeding condition.
This is a peaceful, even shy fish that should not be combined with boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates. Suitable companions are small, calm characins and other soft-water community fish that share its parameters; it is best kept as a single pair or, in a large tank, in a small group from which pairs can sort themselves out. Outside breeding it will not trouble anything it cannot eat. The main husbandry pitfalls are keeping it too cool, too hard or too dirty, and pairing it with fish boisterous enough to bully a retiring dwarf cichlid off its food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Laetacara flavilabris as Least Concern (assessed 20 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The assessment cites the species' wide distribution across the western Amazon lowlands and notes no threats currently known to affect it; the population trend is recorded as unknown, and its habitat is given simply as inland wetlands. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans, with low fishing vulnerability. As a small, widely distributed habitat generalist of the upper Amazon, flavilabris is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics. That said, the western Amazon as a whole faces mounting pressures — proliferating hydropower dams on Andean headwater rivers such as the Napo, Marañón and Ucayali that fragment river connectivity, alongside deforestation and changing land use — and these form the broad backdrop against which the long-term outlook for all of the region's fishes, this cichlid included, should be read.
