Mesonauta guyanae is a flag cichlid of the Guiana Shield, a deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish marked by the bold oblique dark band that runs from the snout to the rear of the dorsal fin and gives the genus its character. Described only in 1998 from the Essequibo River of Guyana, it had long passed through the aquarium trade unrecognized — imported as the common festivum decades earlier — and remains one of the least familiar members of a genus better known by its Amazonian relatives. It is a peaceful, surface-oriented inhabitant of slow, soft, tannin-stained waters, and like its congeners it pairs off to spawn its eggs in the open on a leaf, root, or branch and guards the brood as a couple.

Taxonomy & naming

Mesonauta guyanae was described by the German ichthyologist Ingo Schindler in 1998, in the Zeitschrift für Fischkunde, under the title "Mesonauta guyanae spec. nov., a new cichlid fish from the Guyana Shield." The holotype (ZMB 32779, in the Berlin Museum für Naturkunde) and its paratypes were taken at Rockstone on the Essequibo River, Guyana — the species' type locality. The genus Mesonauta itself dates to Günther (1862); for much of the twentieth century all flag cichlids were lumped under a single name (usually "festivus"), and it was not until Kullander & Silfvergrip's 1991 revision that the genus was resurrected and split, with Schindler later adding guyanae and refining the group. Mesonauta guyanae belongs to a genus of roughly half a dozen species spread across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guianas; within it the fish keys out on a distinctive flank-stripe geometry and meristics. No junior synonyms are attached to the name, and the most recent checklists (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003; Schindler & Ottoni 2016; Taphorn et al. 2022) all treat Mesonauta guyanae Schindler 1998 as valid. The fish was for years confused in the hobby with the festivum and circulated under trade tags such as "Rio Cobra" and "Rio Tapajós," though the validity of those as guyanae populations is uncertain.

Morphology

This is a small flag cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4.5 in total length, and most specimens are smaller, making it a compact fish by cichlid standards. The body is the classic Mesonauta shape — deep, strongly laterally compressed, almost disc-like, with a pointed snout that recalls a small festivum or a stocky angelfish. The defining mark of the genus is a dark oblique stripe that runs from the tip of the snout up across the eye and back along the upper flank to the base of the rear dorsal fin; in Mesonauta guyanae this band, together with a pattern of darker blotches and bars on a brassy-olive to silvery ground, is the basis for separating it from its congeners. The unpaired fins can carry red, orange, or yellow tints, and the pelvic fins are drawn out into long filaments typical of the genus, an adaptation for feeling through plant thickets. Sexual dimorphism is weak and the species is notoriously hard to sex by eye: mature males tend to show slightly more elongate pectoral and anal fins, but this is not reliable, and the surest difference is the deeper, fuller body of a ripe female. Juveniles are more strongly mottled and lose pattern intensity as they mature.

Habitat

Mesonauta guyanae is a fish of the Guiana Shield and the northern fringe of the Amazon basin. The original material came from the Essequibo drainage of Guyana, and the species is also recorded from the Rio Negro drainage of the Amazon in Brazil; the IUCN additionally lists French Guiana within its range, so the fish spans the Essequibo, Negro, and adjacent Guianan rivers. Like the rest of the genus, it favours sluggish water rather than current: slow tributaries, backwaters, creeks, flooded margins, and standing pools, typically where submerged wood, root tangles, marginal plants, and fallen leaf litter provide cover near the surface. These are predominantly soft, acidic, tannin-stained clear- and blackwaters of the Shield, warm and dimly lit beneath the forest canopy. In-situ chemistry specific to guyanae is sparsely published, but its waters track the genus norm — soft, low in dissolved minerals, with pH running from quite acidic in blackwater up toward neutral, and warm tropical temperatures around the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius. As a surface-oriented schooling cichlid it hangs among twigs and branches just below the waterline, where it is easy to approach.

Feeding

Flag cichlids are opportunistic omnivores, and Mesonauta guyanae is no exception. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a diet that mixes small invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans, and other meaty items gleaned from the leaf litter and plant cover — with plant material, algae, and organic detritus. The long pelvic filaments characteristic of the genus help the fish feel its way through dense submerged vegetation and tangled root masses as it forages. In the community it occupies the slow, structured, surface-and-midwater margins rather than the open bottom, taking food from the water column and from the surfaces of leaves, wood, and plants. It is not a specialized sand-sifter like the eartheaters that share its waters; it is a generalist picker, which is precisely why it adapts so readily to prepared foods in captivity.

Mating

Mesonauta are monogamous pair-spawners, and pairs form from within a group as fish mature and select partners. Outside breeding the species is gregarious and mild-mannered, often moving in loose aggregations near the surface; as a pair comes into condition the two fish separate out, claim a small territory centred on a chosen spawning surface, and become more assertive in defending it. Courtship follows the familiar cichlid pattern of mutual display, lateral presentation, and cleaning of the intended spawning site. Aggression in this species is modest by cichlid standards — it is described in the hobby as shy and even timid — so territorial defence is more about driving fish off the nest than the sustained warfare seen in larger New-World cichlids. As with most flag cichlids, keeping a small group and letting a pair establish naturally is the reliable route to a compatible, settled couple.

Breeding

Breeding of Mesonauta guyanae specifically is poorly documented, but the genus reproduces in a consistent and well-known way, and the species is a biparental open substrate spawner. The pair cleans an exposed surface — characteristically a broad plant leaf, but also a submerged branch, root, or piece of wood near the surface — and the female lays a single layer of adhesive eggs across it while the male follows to fertilize. Both parents then tend the clutch: fanning the eggs to oxygenate them and keep them clean, and standing guard against intruders. After hatching, the larvae are commonly moved to pits or sheltered spots, and once free-swimming the fry are shepherded as a school by both parents, who continue to defend them for a period afterward. Egg counts for Mesonauta typically run on the order of a few hundred, in keeping with the modest size of this species; FishBase has no published fecundity figure for guyanae itself, so any number is best read as genus-typical. Soft, warm, acidic water and the presence of suitable broad-leaved spawning surfaces are the usual triggers.

In the aquarium

Mesonauta guyanae is an uncommon fish in the trade — rarer than the widely sold festivum it was long confused with — but where it is available it makes a rewarding, peaceful subject for a soft-water community. It is a moderate-difficulty fish: undemanding in temperament but sensitive to water quality, so the chief requirements are stable, clean, well-filtered water rather than any special trickery. A tank of roughly 45 US gal or more suits a pair or small group, with the footprint mattering more than sheer volume given the fish's surface orientation. Decor should recreate the slow, structured blackwater margins it comes from: driftwood and root tangles, tall or floating plants, dim lighting, and a layer of dried leaf litter, which both supplies cover and the spawning surfaces the fish prefer and gently tints and acidifies the water as the genus likes.

Water should be warm and soft, around 75–82 °F, with pH on the acidic-to-neutral side (roughly 6.0-7.5 is comfortable, and lower pH in soft, tannin-stained water suits it best); the fish tolerate a fairly wide chemistry but reward conditions that mirror their native waters. Filtration should be efficient but gentle — these are fish of still water, so strong current is to be avoided — and the species is noted as sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste, so generous routine water changes and immaculate maintenance matter. Diet is easy: a varied menu of frozen and live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp, alongside quality flake and pellet and some vegetable matter, keeps the fish in good colour and condition.

For tankmates, choose calm species of suitable size. Mesonauta guyanae is gregarious and gentle and is best kept as a group of five or more so a pair can form naturally and subordinate fish are not pressured; mixed with small dither tetras large enough not to be eaten (very small fish like neon tetras may be swallowed), peaceful characins, corydoras, and other mild South-American cichlids such as angelfish or geophagines, it integrates well. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates that would harass a shy, deep-finned cichlid, and avoid overly bright, exposed tanks — given cover, calm company, and clean soft water, this is a hardy and long-lived fish that can reach five to ten years.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mesonauta guyanae as Least Concern (assessed 20 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023), with the population trend listed as Unknown and no specific threats identified — the assessment notes simply that there is no information on threats to the species. It carries no CITES listing and is not flagged for conservation concern. The fish's broad distribution across the Essequibo, Negro, and Guianan drainages and its tolerance of a range of slow-water habitats give it a measure of security, and ornamental collection of this uncommon species is at a low level. As with all fishes of the Guiana Shield and the Amazon, the wider backdrop is one of accelerating freshwater pressure — deforestation, gold-mining and associated mercury contamination, and altered hydrology degrade Shield and Amazonian waters generally — but none of these is documented as a present, specific danger to this particular cichlid, and its formal status is one of low concern.
