Taxonomy & naming
The Zambezi happy was named by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911 as Pelmatochromis darlingi, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, from a single specimen — the unique holotype, BMNH 1908.12.11.5, held in London — taken in the Makabusi (Mukuvisi) River near Salisbury, in the Zambezi system of what was then Southern Rhodesia and is now Harare, Zimbabwe. Boulenger placed it in the West African genus Pelmatochromis, a common catch-all for African cichlids of the period. In 1979 Peter Humphry Greenwood erected the genus Pharyngochromis for a small group of southern-African haplochromine cichlids distinguished by their heavy, molar-bearing lower pharyngeal bone and stout pharyngeal dentition — adaptations for crushing — relative to the related genus Chetia; darlingi was transferred to it, and Paul Skelton (1991) and Poll & Gosse (1995) treated Pharyngochromis darlingi as the valid name. The genus name combines Greek pharynx, throat, with chromis, an ancient fish name applied by Aristotle and later attached to the cichlids. The species honours Captain James Johnston ffolliott Darling (1859–1929), an Irish-born naturalist, zoological collector and prospector active in Rhodesia around the turn of the twentieth century, who supplied specimens to the museums of the day. The nomenclature is genuinely contested. Greenwood himself (1992) regarded darlingi as, in part, a synonym of the older Pharyngochromis acuticeps (Steindachner, 1866), and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists darlingi as a synonym of that species, as do GBIF and the IUCN, which fold the names Pelmatochromis darlingi, Haplochromis multiocellatus, Paratilapia arnoldi and Tilapia rumsayi together under Pharyngochromis acuticeps. FishBase, by contrast, still carries darlingi as a nominally distinct species. The underlying problem is that Pharyngochromis is a variable, basin-wide fish whose size and body depth differ markedly between populations; the standard recommendation, repeated by Tweddle and colleagues, is that the populations need genetic study before the species limits can be drawn with confidence.
Morphology
Pharyngochromis darlingi is a fusiform, moderately deep-bodied cichlid of typical haplochromine build, reaching about 8.5 in total length at the largest as reported by FishBase, though most fish encountered are considerably smaller and populations differ in maximum size — part of the reason the genus has resisted clean taxonomic division. The body is silvery to greenish or brassy, often with a faint pattern of bars or scattered spots and a metallic sheen on the flanks, which underlies the alternative hobby name 'green happy'. The mouth is terminal and the head somewhat pointed, the specific epithet of the senior synonym, acuticeps, meaning 'sharp-headed'. The defining internal feature of the genus, invisible in the living fish, is the enlarged, robust lower pharyngeal bone armed with stout, often molariform teeth — a pharyngeal mill suited to crushing hard-shelled prey. As in most haplochromines, breeding males develop the brightest colour and bear egg-spot-like ocelli on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish are plainer and more silvery; sexual dimorphism is present but, outside of breeding condition, subtle, and the sexes are otherwise similar in shape and finnage.
Habitat
This is one of the most broadly distributed cichlids of the central southern-African plateau, recorded through the upper and middle Zambezi system, the Okavango (including the Okavango Delta of Botswana), and the upper Save-Runde rivers of Zimbabwe, across Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe; an old report from the Kunene in Angola exists, while records attributed to upper tributaries of the Kasai in the Congo basin are regarded as questionable and unconfirmed. FishBase characterises it as 'very adaptive, found in almost every habitat type within its distributional range', and the IUCN assessment of the species (under Pharyngochromis acuticeps) echoes this, listing it from the fringes of rapids, lagoons and stands of aquatic vegetation. Tellingly, it is a fish of the larger water bodies — main rivers, floodplain lagoons, permanent inland deltas and lakes — and is not generally found in the small headwater tributaries that other small Zambezi cichlids occupy. It has taken readily to artificial habitat, becoming common in impoundments such as Lake Kariba on the Zambezi and other reservoirs, which is a large part of why the species is considered secure. As a demersal, warm-water fish of tropical lowland rivers and floodplains it lives in shallow, sun-warmed water — typically within a few metres of the surface — across a broad chemical envelope, from the soft, slightly acidic waters of the Okavango and upper Zambezi to harder, more neutral-to-alkaline conditions elsewhere, at temperatures spanning the warm river ranges of roughly the high teens in winter to the upper twenties Celsius.
Feeding
Pharyngochromis darlingi is a generalist predator and invertivore that occupies a middle position in the food web — FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.2. Its diet is dominated by small fishes, aquatic insects and crustaceans, taken across the variety of habitats it frequents. The genus's signature adaptation, the heavy molariform lower pharyngeal bone, equips it to crush hard-bodied prey such as snails and the shells of crustaceans, so that beyond simple piscivory it can exploit the molluscs and shelled invertebrates of vegetated lagoons and deltas. This dietary flexibility, paired with its tolerance of many habitat types, is the foundation of its wide range and its success in colonising reservoirs, where it preys on the abundant small fish and invertebrates of the littoral zone. In the river and floodplain community it functions as a mid-sized opportunistic predator rather than a specialist, switching between fish, insects and crustaceans as availability dictates.
Mating
As a haplochromine-grade cichlid, Pharyngochromis darlingi follows the reproductive pattern typical of that great African radiation: it is a maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. Reproduction is seasonal and tied to the rains — females are reported to spawn only once a year, around September at the onset of the rainy season — and the social system is built around male display rather than partnership. Males move into shallow water and excavate shallow craters or scrapes in the substrate, which serve as spawning arenas where they court passing females. A receptive female is drawn to the male's pit, where spawning takes place; thereafter the male's role ends. There is no joint defence of a nest and no extended courtship between bonded fish, in contrast to the substrate-spawning cichlids of the New World — the male's investment is confined to building and defending his crater and attracting mates to it.
Breeding
Spawning is the classic haplochromine sequence enacted over the male's substrate crater: the female lays her eggs, the male fertilises them, and the female immediately takes the eggs up into her mouth, where she incubates them. Anal-fin markings on the male, recalling the appearance of eggs, are thought to play their usual role in coaxing the female to snap at the male's vent and so ensure fertilisation of the clutch already in her buccal cavity. Reported fecundity is modest — spawns of approximately 200 eggs per female — consistent with the genus-typical clutch sizes of maternally mouthbrooding African cichlids, which trade large egg numbers for the protection of oral incubation. The female alone provides parental care, sheltering the developing eggs and then the free-swimming fry within her mouth, releasing them to forage and gathering them back in at any sign of danger until they are large enough to fend for themselves. With spawning confined to a brief annual window at the start of the wet season, recruitment is pulsed to coincide with the seasonal flooding that opens up the floodplain habitats the young will use.
In the aquarium
The Zambezi happy is not a mainstream aquarium fish in the way the Rift-lake haplochromines are; it appears mainly in the collections of southern-African enthusiasts, in public aquaria within its range, and occasionally in the trade as a hardy regional cichlid (it is also taken in minor commercial and subsistence fisheries). Kept fish are undemanding by the standards of the hobby. An adult approaching 8 in and a digging, crater-building male want space: a tank of at least 59 in length (roughly 90–105 US gal) is sensible for a small group, furnished with an open sand floor where the male can excavate, some rockwork and roots to break sight-lines, and robust or floating plants rather than delicate stems. Because the species spans such a wide range of natural water chemistry it adapts to most reasonable tap-water conditions — moderately soft to moderately hard, pH from about 6.5 to 8.0 — provided the water is warm (the low-to-mid twenties Celsius) and clean; good filtration and regular water changes matter more than chasing exact numbers. Feeding is straightforward for an omnivorous predator: it takes pellets, frozen and live foods readily, and a varied diet including occasional shelled invertebrates suits its crushing pharyngeal apparatus. The main husbandry caution is behavioural. Like most mouthbrooding haplochromines, breeding males become territorial around their spawning craters and can harass conspecifics and tankmates, so the tank should be large enough to disperse aggression, and tankmates should be similarly sized, sturdy fish rather than small or timid ones. A harem of one male to several females in a spacious, well-structured tank is the most reliable arrangement, and under those conditions the natural spawning behaviour and maternal mouthbrooding can be observed at home.
Conservation
Under the prevailing taxonomy that treats darlingi as part of Pharyngochromis acuticeps, this fish is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (Marshall & Tweddle, assessed 1 March 2007, published 2007), the assessment explicitly listing Pelmatochromis darlingi among the synonyms it covers. The justification is straightforward: it is 'a common species that can be abundant in suitable habitats and has adapted well to impoundments including Lake Kariba', distributed widely across the upper and middle Zambezi, the Okavango and the upper Save-Runde across five countries. The assessment notes only minor pressures — possible future competition from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) escaping or spreading from fish farms in the catchments — and observes that the species has little formal protection beyond the reserves of the Okavango Delta; it is flagged as needing updating. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. It is worth being clear about the nomenclature: because FishBase still lists the name Pharyngochromis darlingi separately, that exact binomial returns no standalone Red List assessment and would technically read as Not Evaluated, but the taxon it refers to is covered, and rated Least Concern, under its senior synonym. The broader backdrop is the accelerating pressure on the Kavango–Zambezi (KAZA) river systems — declining fisheries, habitat change and the spread of non-native species — but as a widespread, adaptable habitat generalist that thrives even in reservoirs, this is among the cichlids least exposed to those threats.
