Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis ecclesi was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his revision 'The deep-water Placidochromis species,' published as a chapter (pages 104–197) in Jos Snoeks's edited volume 'The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy' (Cichlid Press, El Paso). The holotype (MRAC 99-41-P-3862) and paratypes were collected during the SADC/GEF Lake Malawi/Nyasa Biodiversity Conservation Project at Lukoma Bay on the Tanzanian shore, from a depth of 123–125 metres. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid: Placidochromis ecclesi Hanssens 2004, in family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 and is one of the large 'utaka and sand-dweller' haplochromine genera of the Malawi flock; Hanssens's work focused specifically on the poorly known assemblage of Placidochromis living in deep water, a group that is hard to sample and consequently under-studied. The specific epithet honours David Henry Eccles (1932–2021), a British ichthyologist and limnologist who served as Senior Fisheries Research Officer in Malawi and worked for about two decades on the biology, evolution and taxonomy of Lake Malawi cichlids.
Morphology
Placidochromis ecclesi is a small cichlid, reaching about 2.5 in standard length in the type material (FishBase), with an elongate body shape. Hanssens's diagnosis is built largely from proportional measurements: a head length of about 35.6–36.8 percent of standard length, snout length 28.6–29.8 percent of head length, lower-jaw length 38.1–40.0 percent of head length, a relatively large eye (diameter 35.8–37.8 percent of head length) and 17–21 gill-rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. The dorsal fin carries 15 spines and 9–11 soft rays, and the anal fin 3 spines and 8–9 soft rays. As with many deep-water Malawi haplochromines known only from preserved, net-caught specimens, life colour is poorly documented and no photograph of a living fish is widely available; the published account rests on counts, measurements and melanin pattern rather than on field observation of breeding coloration.
Habitat
The species is a true deep-water fish of Lake Malawi. FishBase gives a depth range of 96–125 metres, and the type series came from 123–125 metres at Lukoma Bay on the Tanzanian coast; a further record is noted from Kande Beach in Malawi, so the species spans at least part of the lake's central basin. At these depths the lake floor is a dim, cool, low-oxygen world of open sand and mud well below the rocky, sunlit habitats where most hobby-famous Malawi cichlids live. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, and oxygen falls off with depth, so the deep-water haplochromines occupy a comparatively narrow and demanding band of habitat. These fish are accessible only by trawling or deep survey gear, which is why species such as Placidochromis ecclesi remained undescribed until dedicated deep sampling during the SADC/GEF project of the late 1990s.
Feeding
No direct dietary study has been published for Placidochromis ecclesi, and FishBase records no diet composition for it. The genus Placidochromis as a whole is dominated by benthic feeders that pick small invertebrates, larvae and detritus from sand and mud, and a number of deep-water members are thought to take small invertebrates and zooplankton over the soft lake floor. FishBase places ecclesi at an estimated trophic level of about 3.2, derived from its size and the trophic ecology of close relatives, consistent with a small invertivore rather than a piscivore or a specialised algae-grazer. Its moderately large eye is in keeping with foraging in the low light of deep water. In the absence of stomach-content data, any more specific claim about its diet would be speculation.
Mating
There is no published account of courtship or spawning behaviour in Placidochromis ecclesi. Like the overwhelming majority of Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is virtually certain to be a maternal mouthbrooder, with males courting females and the female taking fertilised eggs into her mouth to incubate them. Many Placidochromis males court over open substrate rather than building elaborate sand bowers, and egg-spots on the anal fin typically play a role in the spawning sequence, but whether ecclesi follows that pattern specifically has not been observed. Because the species lives below 90 metres and has never, as far as the literature records, been kept or bred, its mating system is inferred entirely from the biology of the genus and the flock rather than from direct study.
Breeding
No breeding has been documented for Placidochromis ecclesi, in the wild or in captivity. By the consistent biology of the Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation, it is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder producing relatively small clutches of large, yolky eggs, which the female broods in her buccal cavity for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry; there is no biparental care and no nest. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, a model-based figure rather than a measured one. Everything stated here about its reproduction is inferred from close relatives; the actual clutch size, brooding period and fry development of ecclesi remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis ecclesi is not a hobby fish. It is a deep-water endemic known from scientific trawl and survey samples, with no established presence in the aquarium trade, no trade name and no body of keeping experience specific to it. Its depth range alone — roughly 96 to 125 metres — puts it outside the reach of the ornamental collectors who supply the Malawi cichlid hobby, who work the rocky shallows and accessible sand zones rather than the deep central basin.
This sets it apart from its better-known and far more colourful congeners such as Placidochromis electra (the 'Deep Water Hap' of the trade, which actually lives much shallower) or Placidochromis phenochilus. Any husbandry notes for ecclesi would be pure extrapolation from the genus: a large, well-filtered tank with a sand bed, stable hard alkaline water in the Malawi range, and a varied diet of small frozen and prepared invertebrate foods. But there is no realistic prospect of sourcing it, and no keeping record to draw on. The honest summary is that this is a fish for the museum drawer and the survey dataset, not the aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Placidochromis ecclesi as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 20 June 2018. Lake Malawi as a whole faces real and growing pressures — heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from deforestation in the catchment, pollution and the long-term effects of a warming, more strongly stratified lake that may further reduce the already limited deep-water oxygenated habitat. Deep-water specialists such as ecclesi are of particular interest in this context because their habitat band is squeezed between the lake floor and the oxygen-poor depths, and because they are difficult to monitor. The species is not targeted by the ornamental fishery and is too small and too deep to be a meaningful food fish, so direct exploitation is not a concern; the principal long-term risks are lake-wide habitat change rather than anything specific to this species. As with many Malawi endemics, the species-level data behind the Least Concern listing are thin, and the assessment leans heavily on the species' apparently wide distribution within a single very large lake.
