Rubricatochromis exsul, the Turkana jewel cichlid, is the only jewel cichlid endemic to Lake Turkana — the vast, jade-green desert lake straddling the Kenya–Ethiopia border. Long mistaken for a stray population of the widespread Hemichromis letourneuxi, it is a true endemic, separated from its relatives by thousands of kilometres of arid country. Adults glow ruby-red to peach, dusted with metallic blue spangles, and are set apart from every other jewel cichlid by the smoky-black margins on their fins. A small, hardy, monogamous substrate-spawner of the lake's warm, alkaline, mineral-rich shallows, it reached the aquarium hobby only recently and remains an uncommon prize.

Taxonomy & naming

The Turkana jewel cichlid was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933 as Pelmatochromis exsul, from material collected during the Cambridge Expedition to the East African Lakes of 1930–31; the type locality is Lake Rudolf (now Lake Turkana), Kenya. The Latin epithet exsul, 'an exile', captures its isolation: a jewel cichlid stranded far from the West and Central African rivers where the rest of the group lives. For much of the twentieth century the species was treated as a junior synonym of Hemichromis letourneuxi, the widespread North African jewel, and so vanished from most checklists; later workers re-recognised it as a valid, distinct, Turkana-endemic taxon. It was long placed in Hemichromis, but a 2022 revision of the jewel cichlids (Lamboj, Trummer & Metscher) split the genus and moved the brightly red, monogamous 'jewel' species into a resurrected genus Rubricatochromis — hence the current combination Rubricatochromis exsul. FishBase and several authorities have adopted the new name; the older Hemichromis exsul still appears widely in the trade and literature, and the two names refer to the same fish.

Morphology

Rubricatochromis exsul is a small, robust, fusiform jewel cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in standard length, though most aquarium and wild specimens are smaller, in the 3.5–4 in total-length range (roughly 3.5–4 inches). The fin counts run to roughly XIV–XV spines and 10–11 soft rays in the dorsal and III–IV spines with 8–9 soft rays in the anal. Body colour ranges from a brilliant ruby red through warm orange to a soft peach, intensifying dramatically in breeding fish, and the head and flanks carry scattered iridescent blue-green to turquoise spangles in the classic jewel-cichlid manner. The single feature that separates exsul from every other jewel cichlid is its fins: the soft dorsal, anal and caudal carry distinct dark, blackish margins, a trait noted in no other member of the group. The dark lateral 'jewel' spot typical of the genus is faint or absent. Sexual dimorphism is modest and typical of jewel cichlids — males grow slightly larger and longer-finned, while ripe females become rounder and, in spawning condition, flush an especially deep red; the sexes are otherwise hard to tell apart outside breeding.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake, set in the hot, semi-arid floor of the Kenyan Rift with its northern tip reaching into Ethiopia. This is a closed-basin, mildly saline soda lake fed chiefly by the Omo River: its waters are warm year-round (surface temperatures roughly 79–88 °F), strongly alkaline (pH commonly around 8.5–9.2), highly mineralised and rich in carbonates, and notoriously turbid and jade-green from suspended sediment and algae. Within this demanding environment Rubricatochromis exsul is a fish of the inshore shallows, favouring sandy and rocky margins with cover — pebble fields, rock crevices and submerged structure — where pairs can hold a territory and find shelter. It is benthopelagic, working close to the bottom but ranging up into the water column. As an inshore endemic it is exposed to the lake's pronounced level fluctuations, which expand and contract the littoral zone it depends on.

Feeding

Like its jewel-cichlid relatives, Rubricatochromis exsul is a small, opportunistic micro-predator and generalist carnivore rather than a specialist. In the wild it feeds on aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic and planktonic prey — taken from the substrate and the lower water column, supplemented by whatever small organic matter the productive, plankton-rich lake provides. There is no detailed published gut-content study for this particular endemic, and its diet is inferred from its morphology, its inshore micro-predatory habits and the well-documented feeding ecology of other Rubricatochromis/Hemichromis jewels, which are bold ambush feeders on invertebrates and small prey. In the aquarium it accepts prepared, frozen and live foods readily and is no fussy eater.

Mating

Jewel cichlids are famous for forming strong, monogamous pair bonds, and Rubricatochromis exsul is no exception. Outside breeding the fish can be kept loosely, but as a pair forms it becomes territorial: the two fish select and defend a patch of substrate around a chosen spawning site — a flat rock, a crevice or a cleared depression — and court with the intense colour displays, lateral spreading and quivering typical of the group. The pair bond is the organising unit of reproduction; both partners share territory defence, and the deepening red flush of a ripe female is itself part of courtship. As with all jewel cichlids, paired fish become markedly aggressive toward intruders and tankmates near the nest, and an unsettled or mismatched pair can turn that aggression on each other.

Breeding

Rubricatochromis exsul is a biparental, open/substrate spawner in the classic jewel-cichlid mould. The female deposits a sheet of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, slate or the inside of a cave or flowerpot — which the male fertilises; both parents then guard and tend the clutch. Eggs hatch in a few days and the wrigglers are moved to pits in the substrate; once free-swimming, the fry are shepherded and fiercely defended by both parents in a tight school, a hallmark of the group's intensive biparental care. Clutch sizes are not separately documented for this endemic but, by the standard of similarly sized jewel cichlids, run to roughly 200–400 eggs per spawning. In captivity the species breeds readily for a hard-alkaline-water fish given a settled pair, hiding places and good feeding; the chief difficulty is the surge of aggression that accompanies a spawn.

In the aquarium

The Turkana jewel cichlid is a recent and still uncommon arrival in the hobby, traded as the 'Turkana jewel' or 'red dwarf jewel'. It is a hardy, rewarding fish for a keeper prepared for jewel-cichlid temperament. A single pair is best given a tank of at least 35.5–47 in (around 55–65 US gal); more space lowers the casualty rate, because — like all jewel cichlids — a breeding pair becomes very aggressive and will dominate or kill smaller or weaker tankmates near the nest. The aquascape should mirror the lake margin: a sandy substrate with plenty of structure — pebbles, rocks, slate and the odd inverted flowerpot — to create the crevices and sightline breaks that let fish hold territory and retreat.

Water chemistry is the one area where this fish differs from typical riverine jewels: it comes from a warm, hard, strongly alkaline soda lake, so it does best in hard, alkaline water — pH roughly 7.5–9.0 and warm temperatures around 75–82 °F — rather than the soft, acidic conditions some West African Hemichromis prefer. It tolerates a fairly broad range but should never be kept in soft, acidic water long-term. Feeding is easy: a varied diet of quality pellets or flake plus frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) keeps colour and condition high.

Tankmate choice is the crux. Outside breeding Rubricatochromis exsul can share space with robust, similarly sized fish, but a spawning pair is intolerant of almost everything in a typical tank and will harass slow or timid companions relentlessly. The honest advice is to keep a pair alone in a well-decorated tank, or only with other hardy, fast cichlids in a large aquarium with abundant cover. The common beginner mistakes are underestimating the breeding aggression and keeping the fish in soft water; get the water hard and alkaline and give the pair room, and it is an undemanding, brilliantly coloured fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses the Turkana jewel cichlid (as Hemichromis exsul) as Least Concern, assessed in 2006 and published in 2010 (assessors Akinyi & Hanssens), on the grounds that it is widespread within Lake Turkana and faces no major species-specific threat. That status, however, sits against a backdrop of mounting pressure on the lake itself. Turkana is fed overwhelmingly by the Omo River, and the cascade of large hydroelectric dams (Gibe III and successors) and associated irrigated agriculture on the Omo in Ethiopia has reduced inflow, altered the natural flood pulse and is projected to lower lake level and raise salinity over time — changes that would shrink and degrade the inshore littoral zone this endemic depends on. As a single-lake endemic confined to the shallows, Rubricatochromis exsul is intrinsically more vulnerable than its wide-ranging continental relatives, and the long-term health of its population is tied directly to the hydrological future of Lake Turkana.
