Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia hummelincki was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1991, in his University of Amsterdam doctoral dissertation 'Revision of the South American cichlid genus Crenicichla Heckel, 1840' — the same monograph in which he named fifteen new pikes and formalized the species-group framework still used today. The type locality lies in the upper Rio Trombetas basin, a northern tributary of the Amazon in Pará State, Brazil. Ploeg placed the species in his saxatilis group, an assemblage of medium and small pikes united by a humeral (shoulder) blotch and a similar body plan that runs to more than forty described and undescribed forms; Kullander's earlier 'lepidota group' is now treated as part of the same lineage. The species epithet honours Dr. Pieter Wagenaar Hummelinck (1907–2003), a Dutch zoologist and explorer and founder of the Foundation for Scientific Research in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles; Ploeg dedicated the name on the occasion of Hummelinck's eighty-third birthday. For most of its history the fish sat in Crenicichla, but the 2023 revision of pike-cichlid classification by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández — an integrative phylogenetic study of the subtribe Crenicichlina — resurrected the genus Saxatilia for the saxatilis-group pikes, so the species is increasingly written Saxatilia hummelincki (the Cichlid Room Companion and several databases have adopted this). Saxatilia hummelincki remains the original combination and the name under which the fish is still most widely catalogued.
Morphology
This is a small pike by the standards of its genus. FishBase records a maximum of 4.5 in standard length from Ploeg's type material, placing it among the more compact saxatilines; aquarium specimens of the saxatilis group commonly mature and spawn at around 4–5 in total length, so wild-type adults of the true species are modest fish rather than the foot-long predators many keepers expect from the genus name. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, pike-like form characteristic of Crenicichla, with a long head, a large terminal mouth, and the dorsal and anal fins set well back toward a rounded caudal fin — the shape of an ambush hunter built to lie among roots and strike. Ground colour is a yellowish to brownish tan, darker over the back and paler on the belly, overlaid with the diagnostic markings of the group: a dark suborbital (preorbital) stripe running down from the eye, a dark lateral stripe or row of blotches along the flank, and a rounded humeral blotch behind the gill cover that in this species is ocellated (ringed by a pale halo). A dark, light-ringed spot also sits high on the caudal peduncle, the 'tail eyespot' shared across the group. The species is clearly sexually dimorphic, as saxatilines generally are: ripe females develop a striking red to pinkish-red flush over the belly and lower flanks and carry a black, pale-edged ocellus in the soft dorsal fin, while males grow somewhat larger, show little or no belly colour, and may display fine herringbone striations along the body. Juveniles and stressed fish wear drab grey-brown vertical fright bars that mask the adult pattern.
Habitat
Saxatilia hummelincki is, on the evidence of its type series, a narrow-range Amazonian endemic of the upper Rio Trombetas basin in northern Brazil (Pará, with the IUCN assessment also citing Amapá). The Trombetas is a clearwater-to-blackwater northern affluent of the lower Amazon draining the Guiana Shield, a system of forest rivers, rapids and sandy-bottomed channels; much of the species' range falls within the Rio Trombetas protected mosaic (a biological reserve and national forest). Like other saxatilis-group pikes it is a benthopelagic fish of structured shallow water — lurking among submerged wood, root tangles, leaf litter and marginal cover from which it ambushes prey — rather than an open-water or deep-river species. FishBase classifies it as a tropical freshwater fish but publishes no measured depth or in-situ chemistry for it specifically; by the standards of its group and its Shield-drainage range, the fish occupies the shallow littoral band of forest streams and river margins, on the order of the uppermost metre or two, in warm, soft, often tannin-stained water of near-neutral to mildly acidic pH. Those figures are inferred from the group and the biotope, not from a published field measurement for this species, and should be read as such. Importantly, the brightly coloured pikes traded as 'Saxatilia hummelincki', 'orange pike' or 'Venezuela dwarf pike' typically originate from the Orinoco system of Venezuela and Colombia and are undescribed saxatilines — not the Trombetas fish — a long-standing misidentification that has muddied almost everything written about this species' 'habitat' in the aquarium literature.
Feeding
Pike cichlids are the consummate ambush predators of the Neotropics, and Saxatilia hummelincki is built to the same template: an elongate body, a large mouth and the habit of lying motionless against cover before a short, explosive lunge. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small carnivore rather than an apex piscivore. In the wild the saxatilis-group pikes take small fish, shrimps and aquatic insects and their larvae; shrimp are abundant throughout the Amazon and figure heavily in published stomach analyses of related pikes, and a small species like hummelincki likely leans on invertebrates and small fry as much as on fish it can swallow whole. Some saxatilines are notorious opportunists and accomplished egg-thieves, raiding the nests of sympatric cichlids. In its forest-stream community the species functions as a mid-level predator of the littoral and leaf-litter zone, not a roving open-water hunter.
Mating
No courtship has been documented in the wild for Saxatilia hummelincki specifically; what follows is drawn from the well-observed behaviour of the saxatilis group it belongs to, which breeds readily in aquaria. These pikes form monogamous pairs, and pair formation is the volatile heart of their reproductive biology. Juveniles tolerate one another loosely, but as fish mature and a pair begins to bond, intraspecific aggression spikes sharply — an unpaired conspecific caught in a small space during pairing is frequently killed, and even within a forming pair the larger male can harry or kill the female if she cannot retreat. Sexing is straightforward by the time fish reach roughly 4–5 in: females colour up with a red or pink belly and a black ocellus in the dorsal fin, while males stay plainer and grow larger. Once a stable pair forms, the two defend a shared territory centred on a chosen cave or crevice, and courtship leads into substrate spawning. Keepers manage the aggression by raising a group together with abundant hiding places, watching for a natural pair, and being ready to separate fish — the same forethought wild fish presumably express through the simple expedient of space.
Breeding
All pike cichlids are biparental cave or crevice spawners — substrate spawners, never mouthbrooders — and Saxatilia hummelincki conforms to its group. Wild breeding has not been described, but saxatilis-group pikes spawn freely in captivity and the pattern is consistent: a bonded pair cleans a sheltered site (a cave, a hollow under wood, a length of pipe) and the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs, each anchored by a short filament, to the ceiling or wall of the chamber. Reported clutches for the group run on the order of 300–400 eggs in medium-sized species; a small fish like hummelincki is likely toward the lower end. The female tends and fans the eggs while the male guards the territory perimeter, a clear division of labour. Fry of saxatilines are typically free-swimming about a week after spawning — somewhat faster than the larger lugubris-group pikes — and take newly hatched brine shrimp at once; growth is rapid and broods need sorting by size as cannibalism appears. Parental care can unravel a month or two after spawning, when males often turn on females; in confined quarters this commonly costs the female her life unless target fish or extra space are provided. Large water changes are a reliable spawning trigger in the group.
In the aquarium
The first thing to settle in the aquarium is identity, because it governs everything else. The genuine Saxatilia hummelincki — the small Trombetas endemic Ploeg described — is rarely if ever in the trade. The brightly coloured 'orange pikes', 'Venezuela dwarf pikes' and similar fish routinely sold under the name are undescribed saxatilines from the Orinoco system of Venezuela and Colombia. They are superb aquarium fish, but they are not this species, and a keeper should treat a fish labelled 'hummelincki' as an unverified saxatiline unless its Trombetas origin is documented.
That caveat aside, the husbandry of small saxatilis-group pikes is well understood and these are among the hardiest, most rewarding dwarf and near-dwarf pikes. A pair is comfortable in a tank of about 47 in (roughly 55 US gal) and a four-foot footprint is the practical minimum: anything smaller turns the pairing process into a body count, because unpaired and subordinate fish cannot escape the aggression that flares as a pair forms. The single most common way keepers lose these fish is housing them too tightly during bonding. The standard route to a pair is to raise a group of six or so together, provide a forest of caves and PVC tubes so the vanquished can hide, and let a pair declare itself; be ready to remove the rest once it does.
Water chemistry is forgiving. Saxatilines are not obligate blackwater fish — they thrive in conditioned tap water across a wide range, and many a keeper has bred them in moderately hard, near-neutral water. Aim for warm, stable conditions in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius (about 77–84 °F), a pH anywhere from mildly acidic to neutral (roughly 6.5–7.5), and modest hardness; extreme pH at either end depresses appetite and invites disease. Strong, clean filtration and generous weekly water changes keep them in colour and, as a bonus, large changes often trigger spawning. Décor should mimic a structured stream margin: driftwood, root tangles, leaf litter and several spawning caves, over sand or fine gravel. Plants are optional and largely undisturbed by such a small pike.
Feeding wild imports starts with live and frozen foods — bloodworm, small shrimp, chironomid larvae, the occasional earthworm — after which most individuals convert to quality sinking pellets, though it can take patient weeks. Avoid relying on feeder goldfish, which carry disease and offer poor nutrition. As tankmates, choose robust mid-water dither fish such as large tetras (silver dollars, red-hook tetras) and peaceful, similarly sized companions; the pike will dominate but generally tolerate other genera outside of spawning. All bets are off once a pair spawns, when even tolerated tankmates should be removed for their own safety, and two pikes of the same species in one tank is the classic recipe for a fatality.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia hummelincki as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 (current as of Red List version 2025-2). The rationale notes that no significant threats are identified for the species, in large part because its range lies within the well-preserved, protected area of the Rio Trombetas — a federal conservation mosaic in Pará. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. As a narrow-range Guiana-Shield endemic, however, its security rests heavily on that protected status: the broader lower-Amazon region faces the familiar pressures of deforestation, mining (the Trombetas basin has a long history of bauxite extraction), and the prospect of altered river flow, any of which could affect a fish with so localized a distribution. There is no evidence the true species is collected at scale for the aquarium trade — the trade fish sold under its name come from elsewhere — so harvest is not a present concern. The honest summary is a low-risk, locally protected endemic whose long-term fate is tied to the integrity of a single drainage.
