Taxonomy & naming
Teleocichla monogramma was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1988, in the monograph in which he erected the genus Teleocichla itself (Copeia 1988(1): 196–230) to hold six new rheophilic cichlids from the rapids of central-Brazilian Amazon tributaries. The species was based on a single specimen — the holotype, IRSNB 646, is unique — collected at the Cachoeira von Martius (the von Martius rapids) on the upper Rio Xingu, near the boundary of Mato Grosso and Pará. Those Xingu specimens had in fact been gathered decades earlier, in 1964, by King Leopold III of Belgium and the ichthyologist Jean-Pierre Gosse, and lay in the Brussels museum until Kullander rediscovered them for his revision of South American cichlids. Kullander coined the genus name to flag two relationships at once: 'Teleo-' nods to the African rapids cichlid genus Teleogramma, whose elongate, current-adapted body shape Teleocichla parallels by convergence, while '-cichla' signals the group's phyletic ties to the pike cichlids of the genus Crenicichla. The epithet monogramma is straightforward Greek — monos, 'single', and gramme, 'line' — referring to the species' single, undivided lateral line, a feature Kullander used to separate it from congeners such as Teleocichla gephyrogramma, whose name instead means 'bridged line'. The placement of the fish has not been entirely static: in his 1991 revision of Crenicichla, Anton Ploeg treated the species as Crenicichla monogramma, but subsequent authors (Zuanon & Sazima 2002; Kullander in Reis et al. 2003; Varella et al. 2016, 2023) have consistently retained it in Teleocichla, which is where the Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid today. The genus has grown since 1988 — Teleocichla centisquama (2002), Teleocichla preta (2016) and Teleocichla wajapi (2013) have been added, with more forms still undescribed — but Teleocichla monogramma remains one of the original Xingu trio.
Morphology
This is a tiny, elongate cichlid: the largest measured specimen is only about 2.5 in in standard length, placing it among the smallest cichlids of the Americas. The body is slender and only moderately compressed laterally, slightly tapered toward a short, downturned snout — a shape contemporaries have described as 'goby-like' or, for the way the fish hugs the substrate, even 'blenny-like'. The fin counts reflect a long-based dorsal typical of the genus: roughly 19–21 dorsal spines and 8–11 soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 9–10 anal soft rays. A diagnostic genus trait is the pelvic fins, which are long (the middle ray longest), relatively stiff, and somewhat thickened along the outer margin — useful purchase for a fish that holds position on rock. The pectoral fins are notably asymmetrical, a character (together with a comparatively low longitudinal scale count of about 74–89) that distinguishes Teleocichla monogramma from the more recently described, heavily scaled Teleocichla centisquama. Coloration is muted, as in all Teleocichla: a sandy to grayish ground broken by the single dark lateral stripe that gives the fish its name, often overlaid by faint vertical bars that flare when the animal is displaying or alarmed. Territorial males adopt their best colors and spread their fins broadly; in the wild, larger, brighter individuals are seen holding court over smaller, plainer ones taken to be females or juveniles. Sexual dimorphism is otherwise subtle and poorly documented in this rarely kept species — the difference is one of display and condition more than of obvious fixed markings.
Habitat
Teleocichla monogramma is endemic to the Rio Xingu drainage of the Amazon basin in Brazil, recorded from the von Martius rapids of the upper river down to the rapids near Altamira in the lower Xingu, where it lives alongside several congeners. It is a strict rheophile, confined to the rocky, fast-flowing rapids of a clearwater highland river — never the slow, weedy backwaters favored by the dwarf pike cichlids it superficially resembles. German field workers who collected and observed the Xingu Teleocichla in the 1980s and 1990s found the water at Altamira to be soft and warm: pH around 6.5, general and carbonate hardness each below about 1–2 °dH, conductivity near 120 microsiemens, and a temperature of roughly 90 °F measured in September during the low-water season. The fish occupied a rocky bottom in about a metre of water in the main channel. Within that habitat Teleocichla monogramma is a homebody — it occupies a small territory of stones, pits, or holes in the rock and leaves it only seldom, hiding beneath flat slabs when threatened rather than fleeing across the open bottom the way the more wide-ranging Teleocichla sp. 1 does. Multiple Teleocichla species are sympatric and even syntopic here; observers once recorded at least three different species sheltering under a single flat stone, so that reproductive isolation must rest on behavior, color, or timing rather than on separate microhabitats. To balance and anchor itself in the current the fish performs a striking trick: it turns its flexible pectoral fins horizontal and spreads them like airplane wings, so the flow rushing over them presses the spindle-shaped body down onto the rock.
Feeding
Unlike the pike cichlids, Teleocichla species are not ambush piscivores. The single most important difference from Crenicichla is the mouth: instead of the wide gape of a predator, Teleocichla has a small mouth suited to picking minute food items from the substrate — a 'callionymid' arrangement, likened to the dragonets (family Callionymidae) of marine reefs, which lets the genus exploit a feeding niche unavailable to its larger-mouthed relatives. Teleocichla monogramma is therefore best understood as a small benthic invertivore-grazer: FishBase places it around trophic level 3.2, and field naturalists presume it picks tiny crustaceans and invertebrates from the rock-surface aufwuchs, or snaps at small organisms drifting past while it peers from its crevice. Detailed gut-content data for this particular species are sparse, but the broader study of the Xingu Teleocichla assemblage by Zuanon and Sazima found that diet and microhabitat partitioning among the co-occurring species is exactly what allows so many of them to share the same stretch of rapids. In that crowded, fast-water community the fish is a specialist forager of the rock surfaces and crevices, not a roving hunter.
Mating
The social system of Teleocichla monogramma is built around small, vigorously defended rock territories. It is one of the more aggressive and strongly territorial of the Xingu Teleocichla — alongside its lookalike Teleocichla gephyrogramma — far less inclined to wander or tolerate company than the sociable Teleocichla sp. 1. Where several individuals are found together, the scene is typically a brightly colored, full-finned territorial male holding a patch of stone, sometimes sharing it with one or more smaller, duller fish presumed to be females or juveniles. Courtship and pair formation have not been documented in detail in the wild for this species; what is clear is that breeding revolves around a hole or crevice in the rock that the dominant fish controls. The general Teleocichla pattern, inferred from close relatives and from the genus's rock-perching biology, is of a pair that forms over a chosen cavity, with the male defending the surrounding territory while the female tends the interior — but for Teleocichla monogramma specifically the courtship sequence remains essentially unrecorded.
Breeding
Teleocichla are cave or crevice substrate-spawners: like other rock-dwelling rheophilic cichlids, they are presumed to deposit their eggs on a hard surface inside a hole or under a stone, where the brood is guarded and fanned, rather than mouthbrooding. Spawning of Teleocichla monogramma in the wild has not been observed and described, and the species is so difficult to collect and ship that almost nothing about its captive reproduction has been published either; German aquarists reported the first spawnings of some Teleocichla species in the late 1980s, but fry of this fish have rarely if ever entered the hobby. Clutch size for the species is undocumented. Judging from the genus's small body size and its congeners — the rapids dwarfs of comparable size typically lay modest clutches of a few dozen to perhaps a few hundred adhesive eggs in a sheltered cavity — a small clutch in the low hundreds at most is the plausible expectation, but no figure should be taken as established for Teleocichla monogramma itself. Parental care is biparental cave-guarding by inference from related rheophilic cichlids: eggs and wrigglers are tended inside the crevice and the free-swimming fry shepherded near the rock, with the fast, oxygen-rich water of the rapids doing much of the work of keeping the eggs clean and aerated. The honest summary is that breeding biology here is reconstructed from genus-level pattern, not from direct observation of this species.
In the aquarium
Teleocichla monogramma is, by any honest measure, a fish for the dedicated specialist and almost a non-starter for everyone else. It has historically been one of the most coveted dwarf rheophilic cichlids in the hobby and one of the hardest to obtain: the Xingu rapids are difficult to fish, exporters have refused to guarantee live shipments, and the animals travel badly. A well-documented 1992 American import is a cautionary tale — eight wild fish arrived from the Tocantins–Xingu trade and more than half were dead within five days, the survivors expiring soon after, apparently unable to cope with a non-rheophilic tank. The lesson is that this species demands a true rapids aquarium, not a generic soft-water setup.
That means strong, well-oxygenated, turbulent flow — powerheads or a river-tank manifold generating brisk current — over a hardscape of rounded rocks and cobbles arranged to create the crevices, pits, and overhangs the fish lives in. Each individual will claim and defend a hole, so a footprint long enough to space out multiple territories matters more than sheer volume; even a small group needs broken sightlines and plenty of separate caves to head off the genus's real territorial aggression. Pristine water is non-negotiable: these are animals of clean, cool-to-warm clearwater rapids, sensitive to dissolved waste and to oxygen sag, so heavy filtration, vigorous surface movement, and frequent water changes are baseline requirements.
Target the conditions of the Xingu itself — soft, low-mineral water (conductivity on the order of 100–150 µS/cm, hardness only a degree or two), a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.5, and warm temperatures in the high 20s, with the wild river reaching about 90 °F in the dry season. Feed small, meaty, sinking foods that suit the little picking mouth: live and frozen items such as cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, finely chopped bloodworm and similar micro-invertebrates, offered into the current where the fish can dart out and grab them. Tankmates should be other rapids-adapted fish that share the same demands and won't outcompete a small, deliberate feeder — and conspecifics should be added only with caution, in a large, complex layout, because the species' territoriality toward its own kind is the main behavioral hazard in captivity. In short: spectacular, rare, and unforgiving of compromise.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Teleocichla monogramma as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; published 2022), with population trend unknown and the single listed threat being dams and water management. That threat is far from theoretical for a fish restricted to the rapids of one river. The Xingu's lower reach holds the Volta Grande, a long series of rapids renowned for an exceptional concentration of endemic, rheophilic aquatic life, and it is precisely this kind of fast-water habitat that the species requires. The Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, completed in the mid-2010s, diverts a large majority of the Xingu's flow — by some accounts around 70 percent — away from the Volta Grande and into its generating channel, drastically reducing current through the very rapids these specialists depend on; major fish kills have been documented on the affected stretch since 2016. Teleocichla monogramma also recalls the fate of its congener Teleocichla cinderella, whose type locality on the Rio Tocantins was obliterated by the Tucuruí dam. As a narrow-range endemic of a single dammed clearwater river, this little cichlid is a textbook example of why Amazonian rapids faunas, however abundant they look in the field, can be acutely vulnerable to the alteration of flow.
