Apistogramma flavipedunculata is a tiny, range-restricted dwarf cichlid known from a single stream — the rio Escorpião — high on the Serra do Cachimbo in the upper rio Xingu basin of Pará, Brazil. Henrique Varella and Ricardo Britzke described it only in 2016, naming it for the wash of yellow that floods the rear flank and caudal peduncle of adult males, erasing the dark markings its relatives wear there. It has barely, if ever, reached the aquarium trade, and almost everything on record comes from that original description; the few fish that do appear would be wild-caught. This is a species defined by isolation — penned into the headwaters above a staircase of waterfalls — and the honest verdict is that the data are thin.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma flavipedunculata was described in 2016 by the Brazilian ichthyologists Henrique R. Varella and Ricardo Britzke, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 27, number 1, pages 81–95) — the same paper that erected a second species, Apistogramma eleutheria, from an adjacent drainage. Both fish were collected on the PIPE biodiversity expedition to the Serra do Cachimbo, the fieldwork that also yielded the giant Apistogramma kullanderi, and before they were formally named they circulated in expedition reports under provisional labels; flavipedunculata had been listed as 'Apistogramma sp. upper Curuá' (also rendered 'upper Caurá'). The holotype, an adult male of 2 in standard length, is held at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo as MZUSP 115292, taken at the rio Escorpião where it crosses the BR-163 highway bridge — a tributary of the upper rio Curuá in the rio Xingu basin, near Altamira, Pará, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both list the species as valid, with no synonyms.

The genus name Apistogramma joins the Greek apistos ('uncertain, inconstant') and gramma ('line, marking'), a nod to the variable, often incomplete lateral-line markings that make the genus so hard to sort. The placement of flavipedunculata within it is unusual. Varella and Britzke diagnosed it partly by a meristic quirk: it has four anal-fin spines where the great majority of Apistogramma have three, a trait it shares only with Apistogramma luelingi and its sister-described Apistogramma eleutheria. On coloration and broader affinity, the leading Apistogramma authority Mike Wise places it not with the regani group (where eleutheria sits) but in the Xingu complex, marked off from its neighbours by the lateral band fading out over the yellow caudal peduncle. Wise also notes an undescribed relative, 'Apistogramma sp. Jamanxim,' that closely resembles flavipedunculata but lacks the yellow peduncle and shows the more typical three anal-fin spines — a sign that the boundaries of this group are still being drawn. There is no established English common name; FishBase's auto-generated 'yellowtailed dwarf cichlid' is a descriptor rather than a name in real use, so this profile lists none.

Morphology

This is a very small fish even by the modest standards of the genus. The largest specimen Varella and Britzke examined measured about 2 in standard length, and the male holotype was 2 in SL; there is no reliable evidence it grows larger. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed dwarf-cichlid shape typical of Apistogramma.

What sets the species apart is the colour feature that named it. In adult males the rear of the flank and the whole caudal-peduncle region carry a light yellow pigmentation, and that yellow effectively masks the dark markings other apistos wear there: the midlateral band fragments toward the tail rather than running unbroken to its base, and the vertical bars are masked or absent altogether in adults. Tellingly, those bars are present in juveniles and fade only as the fish matures. The describers used this unique adult-male livery, together with the four anal-fin spines, as the species' principal diagnosis. As across the genus, sexual dimorphism is expected to be marked — males larger and more colourful, brooding females turning the genus-typical yellow with bold black contrast markings — but the description rested on a small series, and the female pattern of this particular species is not well characterized in the public literature.

Habitat

Apistogramma flavipedunculata has one of the tightest ranges of any Apistogramma. It is known only from the rio Escorpião, a small headwater tributary of the upper rio Curuá, which drains the Serra do Cachimbo plateau and belongs to the rio Xingu basin in Pará, Brazil. The describers concluded that a series of three waterfalls probably isolates the species in the upper Curuá — a barrier that fragments the plateau's dwarf-cichlid fauna into narrowly endemic, allopatric forms, exactly as the neighbouring Apistogramma eleutheria is cut off above the Treze de Maio falls. FishBase summarizes the distribution simply as 'Brazil'; the precise statement is the upper rio Curuá drainage of the rio Xingu basin.

The Serra do Cachimbo streams are clear, soft, acidic upland waters draining a quartz-sand plateau, and flavipedunculata is reported to share the rio Escorpião with the much larger Apistogramma kullanderi. Beyond that, the in-situ specifics — measured pH, conductivity, temperature, the structure of its particular stretch of stream — are not published in the available sources, and precise figures would be invention. The water values in the facts panel below are therefore the soft, acidic, warm ranges characteristic of clearwater Serra do Cachimbo and upper-Xingu headwaters and of the genus, not measurements taken at the type locality, and should be read that way.

Feeding

No diet study of Apistogramma flavipedunculata has been published, and the original description reports no stomach contents. What can be said rests on the genus as a whole, which is highly uniform in its feeding ecology. Apistogramma are benthic micropredators — small, bottom-oriented fish that work over sand and leaf litter, taking mouthfuls of substrate and detritus and sorting out aquatic insect larvae (especially midge and other dipteran larvae), micro-crustaceans, worms and other tiny invertebrates. FishBase places flavipedunculata at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, the value expected for such a small invertebrate-feeder and derived from its relatives rather than from gut analysis. In its headwater community it is realistically both predator and small prey — the low-in-the-water-column, forage-and-be-foraged role that has shaped the genus's strategy of small size, crypsis and heavy parental investment. None of this is specific to flavipedunculata; it is the honest genus-level inference in the absence of direct data.

Mating

The pre-spawning behaviour of Apistogramma flavipedunculata has not been documented; the species has scarcely been kept, and its description is a morphological one. Any account of its mating system is therefore inference from the genus. Apistogramma are cave-associated dwarf cichlids in which a male typically holds and patrols a larger territory overlapping the smaller spawning territories of one or more females — a structure that ranges across species from monogamous pairing to strong harem polygyny — and courtship culminates when a receptive female leads a chosen male to her cave. Where on that spectrum flavipedunculata falls is unknown; its Xingu-complex placement and small adult size offer only the weakest of hints, and assigning it a specific social structure would be overreaching. The one useful fact here is ecological rather than behavioural: in the wild it shares its headwater stream with the far larger Apistogramma kullanderi, so whatever its mating system, it plays it out alongside a much bigger congener.

Breeding

Breeding of Apistogramma flavipedunculata has not been observed or reported, in the wild or in aquaria, in any source available here — a direct consequence of how rarely the fish has been collected and how isolated its single known population is. The expected pattern, by strong analogy with the rest of the genus, is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with female-dominated care: the female attaches a clutch to the ceiling of a cavity — under wood, a stone, or a leaf — then tends and fans the eggs and later the free-swimming fry, flushing into a yellow-and-black brooding dress to drive off intruders, while the male holds the surrounding territory. Apistogramma clutches commonly run to about 40–100 eggs, and the fry pass through wriggler and free-swimming stages over a week or two before foraging under the female's guard. For flavipedunculata specifically, the clutch size, spawning triggers and fry development are simply unrecorded, and the figures given here are genus-typical expectations rather than observations of this species.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma flavipedunculata is, at the time of writing, essentially absent from the aquarium trade — there are no documented importation records, and forum discussion is confined to reports of the original description rather than keeper accounts. Everything below is genus-level inference from congeners of soft-water Amazonian headwaters, not species-specific experience, and it should be read that way.

Tank: at a maximum of roughly 2 in standard length it is among the smallest apistos, so a pair can live in a well-planted 60-litre tank, though an 80–100-litre footprint gives the male scope for the territory he will hold. Recreate the headwater stream — fine sand (never coarse gravel, which a substrate-sifter cannot work), dried leaf litter of beech, catappa or oak, scattered driftwood, and two or three snug caves per female. Ceramic caves or halved coconut shells serve, with an entrance sized for a female of about 1 in, since she chooses and defends the cavity; low light and dense surface cover reduce aggression and bring out colour.

Water: this is the non-negotiable. The rio Escorpião is a clearwater Serra do Cachimbo headwater, and the species evolved in soft, acidic water — target pH 5.0–6.5, general hardness under 6° dH, and 75–82 °F. Reverse-osmosis water remineralised to low TDS, or naturally soft water acidified with peat filtration or catappa extract, is the right approach. Alkaline or even moderately hard tap water tends to suppress breeding, weaken immunity, and stress the fish chronically — a trap for keepers used to running hardier apistos like Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma nijsseni in harder water.

Tankmates: a harem of one male to two or three females, each with her own cave cluster, is the natural structure and a reasonable starting point; a simple pair also works, but watch the male for aggression toward the female between spawns and give the sexes a visual break. Small pencilfish or Nannostomus species, or a shoal of soft-water tetras, make useful dither fish that ease the male's focus and bring both sexes into view. Avoid any tankmate large enough to intimidate the cichlids, and avoid other small benthic cichlids that would compete for the same cave territory.

Common mistakes: water that is too hard or too alkaline; too few caves, which drives female–female competition and male harassment; overfeeding and fouling the soft water these fish prefer; and mixing in larger, boisterous tankmates that push them off food. Sexing immature fish is difficult, as across the genus — adult males are known by the yellow suffusion over the rear flank and caudal peduncle and by their larger size and more elaborate finnage, while females stay smaller and drabber until they take on the brooding dress. Because the species is so rare, any fish that do appear are likely wild-caught and may carry internal parasites, so a quarantine and treatment protocol appropriate for wild imports is prudent.

Conservation

Apistogramma flavipedunculata has not been evaluated by the IUCN: it carries no Red List assessment, and both FishBase (Red List version 2025-2) and the Cichlid Room Companion explicitly record it as Not Evaluated. It sits outside CITES and CMS as well. That status reflects how recently and obscurely the species was described rather than any judgement that it is secure, and it sits awkwardly against the fish's natural history — because flavipedunculata has exactly the profile that makes a species vulnerable: a point endemic, known from a single small headwater stream, physically penned above a series of waterfalls with no obvious route to anywhere else.

The Serra do Cachimbo plateau, straddling the upper Xingu and Tapajós headwaters, is remote but not untouched. It is threaded by the BR-163 highway — the type locality is literally at a highway bridge — and exposed to the advancing frontier of deforestation, road-building, sedimentation and, across this region of Brazil, mining and hydropower pressure on small clearwater streams. For a fish whose entire known world is one creek, even a local disturbance — bridge works, a sediment pulse, a change in the headwater catchment — could reach the whole species at once. None of that is a documented threat, and overstating the case would be wrong: there is no evidence of decline, only an absence of monitoring. But the combination of extreme narrow-range endemism and no formal assessment is itself the conservation story, and the most useful thing a careful profile can say is that this species needs an assessment more than it needs alarm.
