Taxonomy & naming
The yellow cichlid was described by Franz Steindachner in 1864 as Heros helleri, from the Teapa River in Tabasco, Mexico (syntypes NMW 17344-49). The epithet honours the Austrian botanist and naturalist Karl Bartholomäus Heller (1824–1880), who collected the type material during his explorations of Mexico. As with the rest of the genus it was long placed in Cichlasoma (as Cichlasoma helleri) before being returned to the resurrected firemouth genus Thorichthys (Burgess 2000; Kullander in Reis et al. 2003). Seth Eugene Meek erected the genus Thorichthys in 1904 for a group of small, laterally compressed Central American cichlids with produced dorsal- and anal-fin filaments and a dark, ocellated blotch on the subopercle. Working through a tangle of names then in use for these fish (including Cichlasoma affine, C. friedrichsthalii, C. rostratum and C. longimanum), Meek formally recognised only two valid species: Thorichthys helleri and a new species, T. ellioti, named for D. G. Elliot, curator of zoology at Chicago's Field Columbian Museum, and described from Motzorongo on the Tonto River — a tributary of the Papaloapan, in Veracruz. The genus was subsequently treated by Regan (1905) as a section within Cichlasoma, in which he recognised three species. The species sits at the centre of a historically muddled complex: Cichlasoma champotonis Hubbs 1936, from the Río Champotón of Campeche, is treated as a junior synonym of helleri, while the Papaloapan-basin names maculipinnis (Steindachner 1864) and ellioti (Meek 1904) were at various times synonymised under helleri or under one another before settling on the valid, distinct species Thorichthys maculipinnis. Modern checklists (McMahan et al. 2015; Říčan et al. 2016; Fricke et al. 2024) recognise helleri and maculipinnis as separate valid species, with helleri the more easterly fish of the Coatzacoalcos-to-Usumacinta belt.
Morphology
Thorichthys helleri is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed firemouth reaching about 5.5 in standard length (FishBase), though field-collected specimens from some populations run smaller — males to roughly 4.5 in and females to about 3 in total length have been recorded from the upper Río Coatzacoalcos. It is among the more elegantly finned members of the genus, the dorsal and anal fins drawn out into trailing points in mature fish. The body colour is a warm yellowish-gold to olive, marked with the rows of blue-green iridescent spots and streaks typical of Thorichthys on the flanks, cheeks and fins, and the unpaired fins are frequently edged or suffused with turquoise and orange. In the upper Coatzacoalcos population the lower half of the head carries a red wash sprinkled with blue spots. Each gill cover bears a dark, light-ringed ocellus, and the lower head and throat are washed with red — more subdued than the firemouth's. A dark lateral spot and a caudal-base mark are usually present. Quiescent (non-breeding) females carry a large black spot, edged in whitish-blue, in the dorsal fin — a marking not present in males. Males are larger and carry the longest, most produced fin filaments and the strongest colour; females are smaller and somewhat plainer. Wild individuals taken from turbid, high-conductivity water have been noted to show markedly duller, less patterned coloration than the vivid fish typically pictured, so appearance in the field can vary considerably with water conditions. The long-finned, yellow-and-blue appearance is the basis for the common name and for the fish's appeal in the hobby.
Habitat
The yellow cichlid is endemic to the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico, distributed from the Coatzacoalcos River drainage eastward to the Usumacinta River system, spanning the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas, with a documented record as far west in the Usumacinta basin as the Río Tulijá near Palenque. FishBase describes it as inhabiting the lower and middle river valleys, where it occupies warmer, slower-flowing reaches over mixed substrates near cover. In the upper Río Coatzacoalcos near Puente Ajal, a small river about 16 ft wide and averaging 19.5 in deep (with pools to 10 ft), field measurements recorded a temperature of 82 °F, pH 8.0 and total hardness of 14 °DH in March — warmer than the 73–79 °F generally cited for the species and toward the hard, alkaline end of the range. As with most Thorichthys, published in-situ chemistry elsewhere is limited, but the species clearly occupies the warm, hard-water lowland rivers of the Gulf-slope coastal plain, with sandy-to-muddy bottoms, rock, and leaf litter. In the upper Coatzacoalcos it lives alongside the local endemic Thorichthys callolepis, Vieja guttatus, Nandopsis salvini and Paraneetroplus bulleri, and at one site was found roughly a hundred times more numerous than callolepis, suggesting it can dominate the smaller endemic where their ranges overlap. Further west, in Usumacinta-system drainages shared with Chuco intermedius, it co-occurs with Herichthys pearsei, Nandopsis friedrichsthalii, N. salvini, Theraps irregularis, T. lentiginosus, T. meeki, T. pasionis, Vieja argentea and V. heterospilus. Its range overlaps that of several congeners, and the genus shows a clear east–west replacement pattern across these drainages, with helleri occupying the central portion of the belt.
Feeding
Thorichthys helleri is a benthic omnivore that feeds by sifting soft substrate, taking in sand and sediment to sort out small invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, worms and organic detritus, with algae and plant material rounding out the diet. Field observation in the upper Coatzacoalcos found it picking bits and pieces from the leaf litter that carpets the river bottom, working the same substrate side by side with the local endemic T. callolepis with no discernible difference in feeding technique between the two. The protrusible mouth and the genus's characteristic bottom-grubbing behaviour suit it to working the sediment, leaf litter and vegetated margins of lowland rivers. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3. In its river communities it is a small generalist forager rather than a predator or specialist.
Mating
Like its congeners, the yellow cichlid is a monogamous pair-spawner that uses the genus's frontal threat display — flared gill covers, presented eyespots and a reddened throat — both to repel rivals and to court. A pair forms after a period of mutual display, then selects and cleans a spawning surface and defends a territory around it. The male's flowing, blue-flecked fins and reddish throat function as condition signals during courtship. Detailed field accounts of helleri's pre-spawning behaviour are limited, and its social biology is largely understood by analogy with the better-studied firemouth.
Breeding
Thorichthys helleri is a biparental substrate spawner. Field observation in the upper Río Coatzacoalcos recorded numerous brooding pairs, with clutches producing on the order of 50 to 100 fry — smaller than the few-hundred-egg figure often assumed for the genus. Unlike the local endemic T. callolepis, which was seen spawning on rock rather exposed to view, helleri's broods were consistently more concealed. Once free-swimming, fry are guarded close to the nest rather than led out through the habitat, foraging from the sediment on leaves and sand under the parents' watch; the pair does not appear to shepherd them on extended excursions the way many substrate-spawning cichlids do. Fry-guarding adults take on a distinctive appearance, showing a pattern of vertical bars on an almost white body rather than their usual gold-and-blue coloration. FishBase carries fecundity data for the species broadly consistent with a moderate clutch size. Precise egg counts (as opposed to surviving-fry counts) and developmental timing for helleri are not richly documented, but its reproduction otherwise closely tracks that of the firemouth and the rest of the genus.
In the aquarium
The yellow cichlid is a well-regarded aquarium fish among Central-American-cichlid keepers, prized for its long-finned elegance and softer temperament. A pair does well in a tank of about 40–55 US gal with a footprint near 39.5–47 in, furnished with a soft sand bed for sifting, rock and wood for caves and broken sightlines, and open swimming space. Robust plants or potted plants can be used, though the fish will dig.
Water should be warm and on the harder, alkaline side, matching its Gulf-slope rivers: temperature about 75–82 °F and pH roughly 7.0–8.0, with medium-hard to hard water. Good filtration and routine partial water changes are essential — like all Thorichthys, helleri is prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion when kept in stale, overstocked or under-maintained tanks, and this is the most common husbandry failing with the genus. Feeding is easy: quality sinking pellets and flake, frozen and live invertebrate foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and some vegetable content.
In temperament the yellow cichlid is one of the gentler firemouths, generally peaceful outside breeding and inclined to bluff rather than fight. It suits a community of similarly sized, even-tempered fish — larger tetras, robust barbs, peaceful catfish and other moderate Central Americans — but a spawning pair will defend its territory and may need extra room or relocated tankmates. Its trailing fins can attract nippers, so avoid fin-nipping companions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Thorichthys helleri as Data Deficient (assessed 17 October 2018, published 2019). Although the yellow cichlid is reasonably widespread across the Coatzacoalcos-to-Usumacinta belt of southern Mexico and is a familiar hobby fish, the assessors judged that available information on its population trend, size and exact distribution — complicated by the historical taxonomic confusion with maculipinnis and other relatives — was insufficient to assign a definitive threat category. The broad pressures on its native Gulf-slope rivers (pollution, habitat alteration, water extraction and introduced species) provide the context for its status, but the assessment's central conclusion is a need for clearer survey and population data rather than evidence of decline.
